Improving the power efficiency of air refrigeration turbomachines

One way of improving the power efficiency of air refrigerating turbo-machines (RTM) is to combine low temperature production with mechanical power generation, sea water desalination or in the processing of some technological products. A study has shown that refrigeration and electrical power generation via the combined application of RTM and gas turbine units will decrease refrigeration costs by 15–20%. In the case of regenerative systems utilizing waste heat from the RTM for sea water demineralization, the cost of low temperature production can be reduced by 15–20%. In addition, a high quality distillate is produced at the rate of 10–15 kg for every 1000 kJ of refrigeration.     

Converter refractories with “Hard” tars and a high coke residue

Conclusions An increase in the coke residue of prepared coal tar material from 32 to 44% causes a substantial increase in the engineering properties of coked specimens which to the greatest extent characterize the service properties of the refractories.The use of tar-dolomite refractories prepared with tar having a coke residue of about 44% enabled us to increase the resistance of the linings of 100-ton converters at the KMZ factory by more than 15%. Tar with a coke residue of not less than 44% can profitably be incorporated into the production of unfired converter refractories.Translated from Ogneupory, No.5, pp. 7–11, May, 1970.     

Guniting of the monolithic lining of steel-teeming ladles

Conclusions The authors have developed the principles of guniting the monolithic lining of steel-teeming ladles with semidry masses. Determination of the wetting of a vitrified siliceous monolithic lining with aqueous solutions of additives and suspensions of these solutions, plasticizing additives, and refractory filler has shown that a coating can be deposited onto the surface of a monolithic lining. Formation of a ceramic bond between the coating and the vitrified surface of a monolithic lining takes place at high temperatures (900°C or above). Masses of siliceous, aluminosilicate, and periclase-chromite compositions have been developed for guniting the monolithic lining of steel-teeming ladles.A procedure for guniting the monolithic lining of 180- and 350-ton steel-teeming ladles has been developed and tested.
