This study characterized the types of interactions between Escherichia coli O157:H7 and spinach phylloepiphytic bacteria and identified those that influence persistence of E. coli O157:H7 on edible plants. A total of 1512 phylloepiphytic bacterial isolates were screened for their ability to inhibit or to enhance the growth of E. coli O157:H7 in vitro and on spinach leaf surfaces. Fifteen different genera, the majority belonging to Firmicutes and Enterobacteriaceae, reduced growth rates of E. coli O157:H7 in vitro by either nutrient competition or acid production. Reduced numbers of E. coli O157:H7 were recovered from detached spinach leaves that were co-inoculated with epiphytic isolates belonging to five genera. A 1.8 log reduction in E. coli O157:H7 was achieved when co-inoculated with Erwinina perscinia and 20% cellobiose, a carbon source used by the phylloepiphytes but not E. coli O157:H7. The reduction on leaves was significantly less than reduction measured in vitro. Phylloepiphytic bacteria belonging to eight different genera, increased numbers of E. coli O157:H7 when co-cultured in vitro on spent medium and when co-cultured on detached spinach leaves. The results, showing reduction of E. coli O157:H7 numbers by natural epiphytic bacteria, support the hypothesis that native plant microbiota can be used for bio-control of foodborne pathogens, however, other epiphytes may promote the persistence of enteric pathogens on the phyllosphere.  相似文献

This research examines predictors of domestically violent men's aggression toward children after the children and their mothers sought help at an emergency shelter for domestic violence victims. Participants were 62 women who had sought refuge at a domestic violence shelter and who had at least one child between 4 and 9 years old. During their shelter stay, women provided data on partner–child aggression that occurred before shelter entry. After leaving the shelter, they also provided data on postshelter partner–mother intimate partner violence (IPV), children's postshelter contacts with their mothers' partners, and postshelter partner–child aggression on 5 occasions after their shelter departure (4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 months postshelter). Consistent with our hypotheses, the level of partner–child aggression before the family entered the shelter, the level of partner–mother IPV after shelter departure, and the frequency of children's contacts with the partners after shelter departure each predicted postshelter partner–child aggression. Fresh and fresh-cut tomatoes have been associated with numerous outbreaks of salmonellosis in recent years. One effective post harvest treatment to reduce Salmonella enterica in tomatoes may be high pressure processing (HPP). The objectives of the study were to determine the potential for HPP to reduce S. enterica serovars Newport, Javiana, Braenderup and Anatum in tryptic soy broth (TSB) and to determine the effect of HPP to reduce the most pressure resistant of the four serovars from fresh diced and whole tomatoes. To evaluate pressure resistance, TSB containing 8 log CFU/ml of one of the four serovars was packaged in sterile stomacher bags and subjected to one of three different pressures (350, 450 or 550 MPa) for 120 s. The most pressure resistant S. enterica serovar evaluated was Braenderup. Subjecting the broth culture to 350, 450 and 550 MPa resulted in a 4.53, 5.74 and 7.09 log reduction in S. Braenderup, respectively. Diced tomatoes (150 g) and whole red round tomatoes (approximately 150 g) were inoculated with 0.1 ml of 9.1 log CFU/ml S. Braenderup, and subjected to the same pressure treatments (350, 450 or 550 MPa). Significant reductions of S. Braenderup concentrations in diced tomatoes (P < 0.05) were seen after processing at 350 (0.46 CFU/g), 450 (1.44 log CFU/g), and 550 MPa (3.67 log CFU/g). In whole tomatoes, significant reductions (P < 0.05) were also seen at 350 (1.41 log CFU/g), 450 (2.25 log CFU/g) and 550 MPa (3.35 log CFU/g). HPP may be an effective post harvest strategy to reduce low levels of S. enterica contamination in whole and diced tomatoes.  相似文献

Highly branched alkoxysilane (HB) units were prepared in situ via a Michael‐type reaction between pentaerythrithol triacrylate and aminopropyltriethoxysilane. These units were used as an inorganic component for the modification of cellulose acetate (CA) films using the sol–gel process. The thermal and dynamic‐mechanical behaviors, the morphology, and the dimensional stability of the modified CA films were analyzed. The siloxane‐modified CA films showed thermal stability similar to pure CA, but the residue content at 900°C increased with the addition of HB units. The morphology of these films was characterized by siloxane nanodomains dispersed in the CA matrix, with good interfacial adhesion between the phases. Moreover, the CA/siloxane nanocomposite films showed improved dimensional stability in comparison with CA, i.e., in the presence of HB, the dimensional change was reduced to around 50% of the value observed for pure CA. Finally, a complex dynamic‐mechanical behavior was obtained for the nanocomposite films, as a consequence of the heterogeneous morphology. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The objective of this study is to graft the surface of carbon black, by chemically introducing polymeric chains (Nafion® like) with proton-conducting properties. This procedure aims for a better interaction of the proton-conducting phase with the metallic catalyst particles, as well as hinders posterior support particle agglomeration. Also loss of active surface can be prevented. The proton conduction between the active electrocatalyst site and the Nafion® ionomer membrane should be enhanced, thus diminishing the ohmic drop in the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). PtRu nanoparticles were supported on different carbon materials by the impregnation method and direct reduction with ethylene glycol and characterized using amongst others FTIR, XRD and TEM. The screen printing technique was used to produce membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) for single cell tests in H2/air (PEMFC) and methanol operation (DMFC). In the PEMFC experiments, PtRu supported on grafted carbon shows 550 mW cm−2 gmetal−1 power density, which represents at least 78% improvement in performance, compared to the power density of commercial PtRu/C ETEK. The DMFC results of the grafted electrocatalyst achieve around 100% improvement. The polarization curves results clearly show that the main cause of the observed effect is the reduction in ohmic drop, caused by the grafted polymer.  相似文献

The structures' durability is an engineering concern for a long time but has been increased in the last years. Lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) combined with glass fibre reinforced polymer bars allows to create structures with high performance in terms of durability. The glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars have different ribs from those of steel bars, and consequently, its bond to concrete is affected. Moreover, the Young's modulus of GFRP is much below compared with that of steel, and this influences significantly the behaviour of structural elements reinforced with this material. This paper presents an experimental study focused on bond between LWAC and reinforcing bars of GFRP. Thirty‐six pull‐out tests were carried out using steel and GFRP bars. These reinforcements were combined with three types of concrete, all with the same design density 1900 kg m?3 but with different values of compressive strength: 35, 55 and 70 MPa. Furthermore, 12 reinforced ties were tested, combining different types of bars (steel and GFRP), two different diameters (12 and 16 mm) and the three types of LWAC. Based on experimental results, several relations were established to understand the behaviour of LWAC structures reinforced with GFRP bars, mainly in the serviceability conditions. These results point out that ties deformation and crack width are very affected by the reduced Young's modulus of GFRP: deformations and crack width of ties reinforced with GFRP are significantly higher, approximately three times greater, compared with those of ties reinforced with steel. The tension stiffening effect was also analysed in detail, and it was found that it is slightly influenced by the concrete compressive strength but is highly dependent of the Young's modulus of the reinforcing material.  相似文献

Iron-containing garnets (YIG) were used as catalysts for selective oxidation of ethylbenzene (EB) in the presence of H2O2 as oxidant. The catalysts comprising of two series of garnets e.g., Y3(Fe1–xZnx)5O12 and Y3(Fe1–xNix)5O12 had distinct Zn and Ni contents (x = 0.00 0.01, 0.03, and 0.05). XRD, Raman and FTIR spectroscopies revealed that the cubic structure of Y3Fe5O12 garnet was present for x = 0.00 and 0.01. For higher contents, the garnets had the Y3Fe5O12 phase besides hematite (α-Fe2O3). The catalytic activity was dependent on the contents of metals in the garnets with Y3Fe4·97Ni0·03O12-γ and Y3Fe4·95Zn0·05O12-γ catalysts achieving better results. The influence of the reaction conditions such as reaction time, reaction temperature and effect of the solvents as well as the substrates to H2O2 molar ratios were studied. SEM-EDS, XPS and EPR results demonstrated the affinity of the Fe2+/Fe3+ pairs with Ni2+ species for the ethylbenzene molecule, which gave an EB conversion of 77% with a good production of acetophenone over the Y3Fe4·97Ni0·03O12-γ catalyst compared to other binary and ternary solids.  相似文献

Twenty-one mono- and biscationic quaternary ammonium amphiphiles (monoQACs and bisQACs) were rapidly prepared in order to investigate the effects of rigidity of a diamine core structure on antiseptic activity. As anticipated, the bioactivity against a panel of six bacteria including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains was strong for bisQAC structures, and is clearly correlated with the length of non-polar side chains. Modest advantages were noted for amide-containing side chains, as compared with straight-chained alkyl substituents. Surprisingly, antiseptics with more rigidly disposed side chains, such as those in DABCO-12,12, showed the highest level of antimicrobial activity, with single-digit MIC values or better against the entire bacterial panel, including sub-micromolar activity against an MRSA strain.  相似文献
