The Fort Totten mercury pollution risk assessment: a case history   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Operational activities have resulted in mercury in the sediments surrounding Little Bay in Queens, NY. This is adjacent to Fort Totten, a formerly used defense site. Some of the mercury levels in these sediments exceeded New York State screening values. A human health risk assessment was accomplished, based on conservative assumptions. The risk assessment examined the potential for adverse health effects from direct contact with and ingestion of contaminated sediments/surface water and ingestion of biota. Potential exposures to recreational receptors including adults and children were examined. The highest numerical risk results from finfish ingestion and then second for exposure from dermal contact to the sediments. The only exposure pathway showing a hazard quotient greater than unity is finfish ingestion for the child. In summary, overall risk to this mercury exposure is minimal in spite of the state screening value being exceeded.  相似文献

Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation has become popular as a primary disinfectant because it is very effective against Cryptosporidium and does not directly form regulated disinfection by-products. Higher UV doses and UV advanced oxidation (UV/H2O2) processes are under consideration for the treatment of trace organic pollutants (e.g. pharmaceuticals, personal care products). Despite the disinfection effectiveness of UV light, a secondary disinfectant capable of maintaining a distribution system residual is required to meet current U.S. regulation. This study investigated changes in disinfection by-product (DBP) formation attributed to UV or UV/H2O2 followed by application of free chlorine to quench hydrogen peroxide and provide residual disinfectant. At a UV dose of 1000 mJ/cm2, trihalomethane (THM) yield increased by up to 4 μg/mg-C and 13 μg/mg-C when treated with low and medium pressure UV, respectively. With the addition of hydrogen peroxide, THM yield increased by up to 25 μg/mg-C (5 mg-H2O2/L) and 37 μg/mg-C (10 mg-H2O2/L). Although no changes in DBPs are expected during UV disinfection, application of UV advanced oxidation followed by chlorine addition was assessed with regard to impacts on DBP formation.  相似文献

The Arctic sea-ice environment has been undergoing dramatic changes in the past decades; to which extent this will affect the deposition, fate, and effects of chemical contaminants remains virtually unknown. Here, we report the first study on the distribution and transport of mercury (Hg) across the ocean-sea-ice-atmosphere interface in the Southern Beaufort Sea of the Arctic Ocean. Despite being sampled at different sites under various atmospheric and snow cover conditions, Hg concentrations in first-year ice cores were generally low and varied within a remarkably narrow range (0.5-4 ng L(-1)), with the highest concentration always in the surface granular ice layer which is characterized by enriched particle and brine pocket concentration. Atmospheric Hg depletion events appeared not to be an important factor in determining Hg concentrations in sea ice except for frost flowers and in the melt season when snowpack Hg leaches into the sea ice. The multiyear ice core showed a unique cyclic feature in the Hg profile with multiple peaks potentially corresponding to each ice growing/melting season. The highest Hg concentrations (up to 70 ng L(-1)) were found in sea-ice brine and decrease as the melt season progresses. As brine is the primary habitat for microbial communities responsible for sustaining the food web in the Arctic Ocean, the high and seasonally changing Hg concentrations in brine and its potential transformation may have a major impact on Hg uptake in Arctic marine ecosystems under a changing climate.  相似文献

We have developed a computer-administered history designed to directly interview hospitalized patients with pulmonary disease. A frame-based decision system is used to direct the history and to generate a one- to five-member differential diagnostic list based on this history. This system incorporates a cognitive model of question selection and a Bayesian scoring algorithm. Structures to control the choice of questions are embedded in the diagnostic frames and in a QUERY program that makes the final choice of questions. We have compared the behavior of this decision-driven approach with a history taken using a paper questionnaire. The paper-based history presents 182 questions to every patient and captured 75% of 85 pulmonary diseases in its differential lists. The decision-driven system asks 50.7 +/- 31.0 (mean +/- standard deviation) and captured 74% of 61 pulmonary diseases. Our experience suggests that the use of a computerized diagnostic knowledge base to direct the selection of pertinent questions can substantially reduce the number of questions necessary to collect a diagnostically useful patient history.  相似文献

Sucrose consumption impairs behavioral and cognitive functions that correlate with decreased neurogenesis in animal models. When consumed during early adolescence, this disaccharide promotes anxious and depressive behaviors, along with a reduction in the generation of new neurons in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. Data concerning sucrose consumption during late adolescence are lacking, and the effect of sucrose intake on the ventral dentate gyrus of the hippocampus (which modulates anxiety and depression) remains elusive. Here, we tested whether sucrose intake during late adolescence causes anxiety or impaired neurogenesis in the ventral dentate gyrus. Rats did not display anxiety-like behaviors neither at the light–dark box test nor at the open field exploration. However, there was a significant increase in proliferative cells in the subgranular zone of the ventral dentate gyrus in rats exposed to sucrose (p < 0.05). This increased proliferation corresponded to neural stem cells (Radial Type 1 cells) in the group exposed to sucrose until adulthood but was not present in rats exposed to sucrose only during late adolescence. Remarkably, the phosphorylation of ERK1/2 kinases was increased in the hippocampi of rats exposed to sucrose only during late adolescence, suggesting that the increased proliferation in this group could be mediated by the MAPK pathway. On the other hand, although no differences were found in the number of immature granular neurons, we observed more immature granular neurons with impaired dendritic orientation in both groups exposed to sucrose. Finally, GAD65/67 and BCL2 levels did not change between groups, suggesting an unaltered hippocampal GABAergic system and similar apoptosis, respectively. This information provides the first piece of evidence of how sucrose intake, starting in late adolescence, impacts ventral dentate gyrus neurogenesis and contributes to a better understanding of the effects of this carbohydrate on the brain at postnatal stages.  相似文献

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are secreted nanostructures that play various roles in critical cancer processes. They operate as an intercellular communication system, transferring complex sets of biomolecules from cell to cell. The concentration of EVs is difficult to decipher, and there is an unmet technological need for improved (faster, simpler, and gentler) approaches to isolate EVs from complex matrices. Herein, an acoustofluidic concentration of extracellular vesicles (ACEV) is presented, based on a thin-film printed circuit board with interdigital electrodes mounted on a piezoelectric substrate. An angle of 120° is identified between the electrodes and the reference flat of the piezoelectric substrate for simultaneous generation of Rayleigh and shear horizontal waves. The dual waves create a complex acoustic field in a droplet, resulting in effective concentration of nanoparticles and EVs. The ACEV is able to concentrate 20 nm nanospheres within 105 s and four EV dilutions derived from the human prostate cancer (Du145) cell line in approximately 30 s. Cryo-electron microscopy confirmed the preservation of EV integrity. The ACEV device holds great potential to revolutionize investigations of EVs. Its faster, simpler, and gentler approach to EV isolation and concentration can save time and effort in phenotypic and functional studies of EVs.  相似文献

The effectiveness of exploration robots is contingent upon their capability and efficiency to locomote on contorted and multifaceted terrains. Traditional wheeled robots do not suffice at overcoming such terrains and complications they introduce. The proposed work explores the performance of WhegRunner, a whegged (i.e., wheel-legged) robotic platform used to examine the mechanics of running on granular media at different saturation levels. In particular, the effect of bipedal/quadrupedal gait, saturation level, stride length, and stride frequency on robot's forward body velocity and cost of transport (COT) was studied. To increment nominal stride length, the robot was fitted with different number of spoked whegs from 3 to 7. In addition, eight evenly spaced motor speeds ranging from 2.33 to 7.43 Hz were used to observe the effect of stride frequency. Similar trends were observed between the two gaits, with the quadrupedal gait showing better overall performance. On dry sand, wider strides were attained at reduced motor speeds with lower spoked whegs. However, on wet sand (15% and 30% saturation), wider strides were achieved with higher motor speeds and lower spoked whegs. As a result, lower spoked whegs accomplished higher body forward velocity and lower COT as saturation increased. The acquired knowledge elucidates underexplored mechanics of locomotion on granular media at different saturation levels. The WhegRunner can be used as a platform to obtain a greater insight on how to develop more proficient exploration robots, ones which can face complex and deformable terrains and mediums.  相似文献

The paper looks at the problem of ensuring the performance of real-time applications hosted on Galactica Net, a mesh-based distributed cache coherent shared memory multiprocessing system. A method for determining strict upper bounds on worst case latencies in wormhole routed networks of known or unknown communication patterns is presented. From this, a tool for determining upper bounds for shared memory update latencies is developed, and it is shown that the update latency of Galactica Net is deterministic. The analytical bounds are then compared with maximum latencies observed in simulations of GNet, with which they compare favorably. Finally, it is shown that the tool for determining update latency bounds is useful for comparing differing GNet system configurations in order to minimize update latency bounds.  相似文献
