Residual stresses resulting from the shrinkage of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cement have been implicated in the formation of cracks in cement mantles following total hip arthroplasty. This study investigates whether two such cements, with differentiated solidification characteristics (i.e. working and setting times), display significant differences in their residual stress characteristics in an experiment designed to replicate the physical conditions of total hip arthroplasty. Experiments were performed using a representative femoral construct to measure and compare the temperatures and residual strains developed for standard PMMA cement mantles (CMW 1 Gentamicin) and slow curing cement mantles (SmartSet HV Gentamicin) during and following polymerization. These experimental results revealed no statistically significant difference (t-test, p > 0.05) for peak exotherm temperature and residual strain levels between the cements (measured after 3 h). The tailored polymerization characteristics of the slow-curing cement do not significantly affect residual stress generation, compared with the standard cement. It is often considered that residual stresses significantly relax following polymerization and before biomechanical loads are first applied during rehabilitation (up to 3 days later). This was examined for durations of 18 h to 3 days. Axial strains in the model femur and stem reduced by averages of 5.5 and 7.9 per cent respectively, while hoop strains in the stem exhibited larger reductions. An axisymmetric transient thermoelastic finite element model of the experiment was developed, allowing residual stresses to be predicted based on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements of the heat released throughout the exothermic curing reaction. The model predictions closely replicated the experimental measurements of both temperature and residual strain at 3 h, suggesting that residual strains can be fully accounted for by the thermal contraction mechanism associated with cooling after solidification.  相似文献

The design of a three-channel solar radiometer used to determine total columnar atmospheric water-vapor amounts is presented. The main channel is located in the 0.94-μm water-vapor band, and two other channels are located in adjacent nonabsorption regions of the solar spectrum and are used to remove scattering effects from the main channel. Water-vapor transmittance is determined by means of a modified Langley approach, and these transmittances are converted to columnar water vapor by means of a band model developed at the University of Arizona. Several cases are presented in which columnar water-vapor amounts are determined through the use of the instrument and method described here. These results are compared with sounding-balloon results. Tests of the method indicate that columnar water vapor may be retrieved with an uncertainty of less than 10%.  相似文献

An analytical model of the scattering structure factor for an assembly of noninteracting hard disks has recently appeared in the literature [Phys. Rev. A 42, 5978-5989 (1990)]. We employ this model to calculate correlated light scattering by monodispersions and binary mixtures of condensation droplets on a window pane. We find that an area fraction of ? ≥ 0.6 is required for producing the near-forward direction scattering suppression and that a moderately wide polydispersion of droplet sizes is capable of producing the experimentally observed bright ring of colored light.  相似文献

A differential absorption lidar system for routine profiling of tropospheric ozone for daytime and nighttime operation is described. The system uses stimulated Raman scattering in hydrogen and deuterium of 266-nm radiation from a quadrupled Nd:YAG laser. Ozone profiles from altitudes of 600 m to approximately 5 km have been obtained with analog detection. Implementing corrections for differential Rayleigh scattering, differential absorption from oxygen, sulphur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide, and differential aerosol extinction and backscatter can reduce the total system inaccuracy to 5-15% for a clear day and 20-30% for a hazy day, except at the top of the mixed layer. Photon counting must be installed to increase the measurement range from 5 to 15 km. An example of an application of routine measurements of tropospheric ozone profiles is given.  相似文献

A recently developed laser-induced incandescence technique is used to make novel planar measurements of soot volume fraction within turbulent diffusion flames and droplet flames. The two-dimensional imaging technique is developed and assessed by systematic experiments in a coannular laminar diffusion flame, in which the soot characteristics have been well established. With a single point calibration procedure, agreement to within 10% was found between the values of soot volume fraction measured by this technique and those determined by conventional laser scattering-extinction methods in the flame. As a demonstration of the wide range of applicability of the technique, soot volume fraction images are also obtained from both turbulent ethene diffusion flames and from a freely falling droplet flame that burns the mixture of 75% benzene and 25% methanol. For the turbulent diffusion flames, approximately an 80% reduction in soot volume fraction was found when the Reynolds number of the fuel jet increased from 4000 to 8000. In the droplet flame case, the distribution of soot field was found to be similar to that observed in coannular laminar diffusion flames.  相似文献

The design and operating characteristics of a dye laser pumped by a 3-W copper-vapor laser (CVL) and injection seeded by low-power (1-5 mW) He-Ne lasers at 633 nm are reported. An extremely simple optical arrangement is used wherein the output mirror of the He-Ne laser and a third mirror form the dye laser cavity. Laser efficiency in fixed-wavelength operation has been investigated for variable CVL pump power, He-Ne injection power and polarization, and cavity output coupling for a standard Rhodamine 590/Rhodamine 640 dye solution. Over 90% of free-running (unseeded) laser power is obtained in fixed-wavelength (seeded) operation at low CVL pump powers (≤1 W), dropping to approximately 60% at 3-W pump power. Maximum CVL pump to dye laser optical conversion efficiency in narrow-band, fixed-wavelength operation at 633 nm was 12%.  相似文献
