Performance characteristics of a compact position-sensitive LSO detector module

We assembled a compact detector module comprised of an array of small, individual crystals of lutetium oxyorthosilicate:Ce (LSO) coupled directly to a miniature, metal-can, position-sensitive photomultiplier tube (PSPMT). We exposed this module to sources of 511-keV annihilation radiation and beams of 30- and 140-keV photons and measured spatial linearity; spatial variations in module gain, energy resolution, and event positioning; coincidence timing; the accuracy and sensitivity of identifying the crystal-of-first-interaction at 511 keV; and the effects of intercrystal scatter and LSO background radioactivity. The results suggest that this scintillator/phototube combination should be highly effective in the coincidence mode and can be used, with some limitations, to image relatively low-energy single photon emitters. Photons that are completely absorbed on their first interaction at 511 keV are positioned by the module at the center of a crystal. Intercrystal scatter events, even those that lead to total absorption of the incident photon, are placed by the module in a regular "connect-the-dot" pattern that joins crystal centers. As a result, the accuracy of event positioning can be made to exceed 90%, though at significantly reduced sensitivity, by retaining only events that occur within small regions-of-interest around each crystal center and rejecting events that occur outside these regions in the connect-the-dot pattern.

Effects of breed and sire on carcass characteristics and fatty acid profiles of crossbred wagyu and angus steers

In a two-year experiment, 54 steers sired by seven Wagyu bulls [American Wagyu Association (AWA) sire numbers 331, 384, 388, 411, 429, 433 and 488] and 15 steers sired by two Angus bulls, all out of Angus-Hereford cows, were used to evaluate the effects of sire and breed on carcass characteristics and fatty acid composition. Steers were given ad-libitum access to a high-concentrate diet (15 % alfalfa cubes and 85 % barley supplement) for at least 170 days. Breed and individual sire effects were analysed. Wagyu-sired steers had higher marbling, maturity and quality scores, more estimated kidney, pelvic and heart fat, larger longissimus dorsi muscle areas, lower fat thicknesses and yield grades than Angus-sired steers (p < 0.05). Steers sired by 388, 411 and 433 had lower fat thicknesses than steers sired by Angus, 429 and 488 (p < 0.05). Steers sired by 384 and 388 had higher marbling scores per cm subcutaneous fat than steers sired by Angus, 429 and 488, and lower fat thickness per 100 kg of carcass weight than Angus-sired steers (p < 0.05). For both subcutaneous fat and longissimus dorsi muscle, Wagyu-sired steers had higher (p < 0.05) percentages of 14:0, 14:1, 16:0, 16:1, and lower percentages of 18:0 than Angus-sired steers. The genetic differences in carcass characteristics among Wagyu sires may enable us to select for improved marbling with less fat in the Wagyu breed. Some statistically significant (p < 0.05) but small differences existed in fatty acid profiles between breeds and among sires.     

Analysis of the hemispheric asymmetry using fractal dimension of a skeletonized cerebral surface

We investigated hemispheric asymmetry using the fractal dimension (FD) of the skeletonized cerebral surface. Sixty-two T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging volumes from normal Korean adults were used. The skeletonization of binary volume data, which corresponded to the union of the gray matter and cerebrospinal flow classified by fuzzy clustering, was performed slice by slice in the sagittal direction, and then skeletonized slices were integrated into the three-dimensional (3-D) hemisphere. Finally, the FD of the 3-D skeletonized cerebral surface was calculated using the box-counting method. We measured the FD of the skeletonized cerebral surface and the volumes of intracranial gray matter and white matter for the whole hemispheres and obtained the hemispheric asymmetries of each measurement. The FD, the gray matter, and the white matter volumes for the whole hemispheres decreased in the old group. The asymmetry of the FD revealed a significant right-greater-than-left asymmetry showed rightward, but did not change according to age and gender. None of the intracranial gray matter or white matter volumes showed any significant asymmetric changes. It could be said that the FD of the skeletonized cerebral surface is a novel measure of cerebral asymmetry.
