Polyaluminum chloride (PACl) is a well-established coagulant in water treatment with high removal efficiency for arsenic. A high content of Al30 nanoclusters in PACl improves the removal efficiency over broader dosage and pH range. In this study we tested PACl with 75% Al30 nanoclusters (PAClAl30) for the treatment of arsenic-contaminated well water by laboratory batch experiments and field application in the geothermal area of Chalkidiki, Greece, and in the Pannonian Basin, Romania. The treatment efficiency was studied as a function of dosage and the nanoclusters’ protonation degree. Acid-base titration revealed increasing deprotonation of PAClAl30 from pH 4.7 to the point of zero charge at pH 6.7. The most efficient removal of As(III) and As(V) coincided with optimal aggregation of the Al nanoclusters at pH 7-8, a common pH range for groundwater. The application of PAClAl30 with an Altot concentration of 1-5 mM in laboratory batch experiments successfully lowered dissolved As(V) concentrations from 20 to 230 μg/L to less than 5 μg/L. Field tests confirmed laboratory results, and showed that the WHO threshold value of 10 μg/L was only slightly exceeded (10.8 μg/L) at initial concentrations as high as 2300 μg/L As(V). However, As(III) removal was less efficient (<40%), therefore oxidation will be crucial before coagulation with PAClAl30. The presence of silica in the well water improved As(III) removal by typically 10%. This study revealed that the Al30 nanoclusters are most efficient for the removal of As(V) from water resources at near-neutral pH.  相似文献

Both nonstatutory community‐based catchment management groups and existing statutory groups seek effective environmental management characterised by public participation, collaborative working and decentralised modes of assessment, planning and decision making. The characteristics and challenges of catchment management for water resources and protection of water quality require such approaches, and an expansion of both community‐based and state‐led initiatives has been evident in the United Kingdom. Available information about these developments is, however, limited and this paper reports survey findings of such initiatives, providing a mid‐to‐late 2009 ‘snapshot’ of the situation in England and Wales. Catchment management groups are profiled in terms of size, organisational structure, membership, financing, technology transfer, policy influence and other outcomes. The results are interpreted with reference to a growing international literature, the potential sustainability, effectiveness and impact of groups and environmental governance challenges, including those posed by the European Union Water Framework Directive.  相似文献

Liquid chromatography (LC) with fluorescence detection and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) have been compared for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a variety of environmental samples. Three sets of data are presented in this paper in which LC/fluorescence and GC/MS were used for the analysis of the same samples. These three data sets include the comparison of results from: (1) certification measurements for three natural matrix Standard Reference Materials (SRM's), (2) an international round robin for the determination of PAHs in air and diesel particulate samples, and (3) the analysis of four marine sediment reference materials. The results from these studies indicate that the two techniques generally provide comparable results for the measurement of PAHs in environmental samples (in the range of 0.1 to 300 ng/g), with differences in the two techniques between 5–20%. However, at low levels, anthracene and perylene are best measured using LC/fluorescence because of their selective and sensitive fluorescence detection characteristics. In contrast, GC/MS provides more accurate results for the determination of benzo[ghi]perylene because of its low fluorescence sensitivity.  相似文献

Driven by the relatively high cost of silver (Ag), interest has grown in the photovoltaic (PV) industry to substitute conventional screen printed (SP) Ag front contacts with copper (Cu) plated contacts. The approach chosen here applies selective laser ablation of the front anti‐reflection coating (ARC), then forming self‐aligned nickel silicides (NiSix) contacts, and thickening the lines by Cu plating to achieve the desired line conductivity. A successful implementation of this scheme requires annealing to form NiSix with low contact resistance. However, it has been shown that industrial shallow emitters can be damaged severely upon conventional annealing of nickel. In this paper, we show that by using large area excimer laser annealing (ELA), NiSix contacts can be formed on industrial shallow emitters without the associated junction degradation. On the basis of sheet resistance, transmission electron microscopy, and lifetime measurements, we demonstrate that NiSix formation by ELA can be achieved in narrow contact openings without damaging the passivation and reflectance properties of the neighboring ARC. In addition, the thresholds for NiSix formation for different Ni thicknesses are quantified by rigorous finite element simulations and compared with experimental data. Finally, high efficiency passivated emitter and rear cell type solar cells featuring a shallow 85 Ω/sq emitter have been processed on large area CZ–Si using laser ablation of the ARC and subsequent NiSix formation by ELA. These cells show an average efficiency gain of 0.4%abs compared with cells processed with reference SP contacts. The field‐effect transistor (FET) and diode characteristics of poly(3‐alkylthiophene) (P3AT) nanofiber layers deposited from nanofiber dispersions are presented and compared with those of layers deposited from molecularly dissolved polymer solutions in chlorobenzene. The P3AT n‐alkyl‐side‐chain length was varied from 4 to 9 carbon atoms. The hole mobilities are correlated with the interface and bulk morphology of the layers as determined by UV–vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with selected area electron diffraction (SAED), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and polarized carbon K‐edge near edge X‐ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. The latter technique reveals the average polymer orientation in the accumulation region of the FET at the interface with the SiO2 gate dielectric. The previously observed alkyl‐chain‐length‐dependence of the FET mobility in P3AT films results from differences in molecular ordering and orientation at the dielectric/semiconductor interface, and it is concluded that side‐chain length does not determine the intrinsic mobility of P3ATs, but rather the alkyl chain length of P3ATs influences FET diode mobility only through changes in interfacial bulk ordering in solution processed films.  相似文献

The European Water Framework Directive (WFD), which was adopted in 2000, changed water management in all member states of the European Union fundamentally, putting aquatic ecology at the base of management decisions. Here we review the successes and problems encountered with implementation of the WFD over the past 10 years and provide recommendations to further improve the implementation process. We particularly address three fields: (i) the development of assessment methods (including reference conditions, typologies and intercalibration); (ii) the implementation of assessment systems in monitoring programmes; and (iii) the consequences for river basin management plans (such as the design, monitoring and success of restoration measures).The development of assessment methods has been a transparent process and has resulted in improved and more standardised tools for assessing water bodies across Europe. The process has been more time consuming, and methods are more complex, than originally expected. Future challenges still remain, including the estimation of uncertainty of assessment results and a revision of rules in combining the results obtained with different Biological Quality Elements.A huge amount of monitoring data is now being generated for WFD purposes. Monitoring data are not centrally stored and thus poorly accessible for purposes beyond the WFD. Future challenges include enhanced data accessibility and the establishment of a Europe-wide central monitoring network of reference sites.The WFD river basin management plans base management decisions on the response of aquatic organisms to environmental stress. In contrast to the effects of degradation, the biotic response to restoration is less well-known and poorly predictable. The timescale of the WFD (obtaining good ecological status in all surface waters by 2027) is over-ambitious. Future challenges include long-term monitoring of restoration measures to understand the requirements for ecosystems to recover and prioritisation of measures according to re-colonisation potential.  相似文献

The mechanisms and evolution of metallic structural colours are of both fundamental and applied interest, yet most work in arthropods has focused on derived butterflies and beetles with distinct hues. In particular, basal hexapods—groups with many scaled, metallic representatives—are currently poorly studied and controversial, with some recent studies suggesting either that thin-film (lamina thickness) or diffraction grating (longitudinal ridges, cross-ribs) elements produce these colours in early Lepidoptera and one springtail (Collembola) species. Especially the collembolan basal scale design, consisting of a single lamina and longitudinal ridges with smooth valleys lacking cross-ribs, makes them an interesting group to explore the mechanisms of metallic coloration. Using microspectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, electron microscopy and finite-difference time-domain optical modelling, we investigated scale colour in seven springtail species that show clear metallic coloration. Reflectance spectra are largely uniform and exhibit a broadband metallic/golden coloration with peaks in the violet/blue region. Our simulations confirm the role of the longitudinal ridges, working in conjunction with thin-film effects to produce a broadband metallic coloration. Broadband coloration occurs through spatial colour mixing, which probably results from nanoscale variation in scale thickness and ridge height and distance. These results provide crucial insights into the colour production mechanisms in a basal scale design and highlight the need for further investigation of scaled, basal arthropods.  相似文献

Growth/no growth (G/NG) studies that include the effect of medium structure have typically been performed for (pathogenic) bacteria and on the basis of gelatin/agar as a gelling agent. In this study, the growth potential of the spoilage yeast Zygosaccharomyces bailii was investigated in two model systems that resemble the macroscopic physicochemical and rheological properties of acidic sauces. In a Carbopol model system, the effect of pH (3.5-4.5), glycerol concentration (17-32%), acetic acid concentration (1.5-2.0%) and medium structure (3 levels) was investigated. In xanthan gum, the behavior of the yeast was studied at different levels of pH (3.5-4.5), NaCl concentration (0.5-13.5%), acetic acid concentration (0-2.0%) and medium structure (2 levels). Rheologically, viscoelastic moduli failed to discriminate between different forms of microbial growth, whereas yield stress data appeared to provide a better indication. In general, G/NG results revealed an unexpected increase of growth probability as a function of medium structure, both at 22 and 30 °C. Whether this behavior is the result of an underlying growth-promoting mechanism could not be explained from a macroscopic point of view (e.g., macrorheology, aw), but may be more related to the local microscopic properties of the gels. In a second part of this study, the potential use and information content of optical density measurements for G/NG data collection in structured media were critically evaluated and confronted with their practical relevance to the food industry.  相似文献

Exposure of humans and wildlife to various inorganic and organometallic forms of mercury (Hg) may induce adverse health effects. While human populations in developed countries are mainly exposed to marine fish monomethylmercury (MMHg), this is not necessarily the case for developing countries and diverse indigenous people. Identification of Hg exposure sources from biomonitor media such as urine or hair would be useful in combating exposure. Here we report on the Hg stable isotope signatures and Hg speciation in human hair across different gold miner, indigenous and urban populations in Bolivia and France. We found evidence for both mass-dependent isotope fractionation (MDF) and mass-independent isotope fractionation (MIF) in all hair samples. Three limiting cases of dominant exposure to inorganic Hg (IHg), freshwater fish MMHg, and marine fish MMHg sources are used to define approximate Hg isotope source signatures. Knowing the source signatures, we then estimated Hg exposure sources for the Bolivian gold miner populations. Modeled IHg levels in hair correspond well to measured IHg concentrations (R = 0.9), demonstrating that IHg exposure sources to gold miners can be monitored in hair samples following either its chemical speciation or isotopic composition. Different MMHg and inorganic exposure levels among gold miners appear to correspond to living and working conditions, including proximity to small towns, and artisanal vs large scale mining activity.  相似文献
