Gastrointestinal (GI) motility is coordinated by several cooperating mechanisms, including electrical slow wave activity, the enteric nervous system (ENS), and other factors. Slow waves generated in interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) depolarize smooth muscle cells (SMC), generating basic GI contractions. This unique electrical coupling presents an added layer of complexity to GI electromechanical models, and a current barrier to further progress is the lack of a framework for ICC-SMC-contraction coupling. In this study, an initial framework for the electromechanical coupling was developed in a 2-D model. At each solution step, the slow wave propagation was solved first and [Ca(2+)](i) in the SMC model was related to a Ca(2+)-tension-extension relationship to simulate active contraction. With identification of more GI-specific constitutive laws and material parameters, the ICC-SMC-contraction approach may underpin future GI electromechanical models of health and disease states. 相似文献

Lactation has been negatively associated with fertility because pregnancy rates in maiden heifers exceed those obtained after first or subsequent calvings. The extent of this difference is less in pasture-fed dairy cows ( < 10%) than in American Holsteins ( > 20%) fed grain and conserved forages. The latter cows have pregnancy rates to first insemination and oestrus detection rates of only 40 to 45%. This suggests that the subsequent fertility of inherently fertile Holstein heifers may be severely compromised by high levels of milk production. International comparisons show that pasture-fed dairy cows may experience extended periods of anovulatory anoestrum but have normal fertility (60% pregnancy rate to first insemination) once cycling. The high-producing American Holstein may ovulate within 4 weeks postpartum but is more likely to continue ovulating without being detected in oestrus. Both situations are associated with negative energy balances (NEB) during early lactation. The severity and duration of this NEB may vary with body condition at calving, age or parity, ration formulation, production level and environmental factors. Relative daily milk yield is not an absolute indicator of NEB, because some lower producing cows within a herd have lower feed intakes and more severe energy deficits. NEB is not simple to measure; nonetheless, it is correlated with genetic improvement for milk yield. A positive energy balance, greater weight gain and higher body condition score have all been shown to be positively correlated with plasma progesterone concentrations in early lactation. No studies have investigated the possibility that the rapid increase in metabolic rate at this time may also alter steroid concentrations with consequent effects on oestrous behaviour and fertility. Studies to more precisely define the effects of increasing milk yields in early lactation, especially in Holsteins, may need to be completed in Australia and New Zealand. Oestrus detection rates and pregnancy rates for American Holsteins of less than 50% are accepted widely in the USA. Such low detection rates confound studies on fertility. The objective should be to increase these 2 rates to at least 80% and 60% respectively. The evolution of clinical practice protocols is described within the context of its origins in utilization review and utilization management. Physician concerns and barriers to implementation, as well as the role of the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) are discussed. An example of competing guidelines from the AHCPR and the American Psychiatric Association is described in detail. The available literature on cost savings related to utilization management and clinical guidelines is reviewed and summarized. We have previously shown that prostaglandins (PG) and nitric oxide (NO) are required in the induction of bone formation by mechanical stimulation. We therefore tested the ability of NO donors, S-nitroso-N-acetyl-D,L-penicillamine (SNAP), and S-nitroso-glutathione (GSNO) to mimic or augment the osteogenic response of bone to a minimal mechanical stimulus. In rats administered vehicle or the vasodilator hydralazine, stimulation of the 8th caudal vertebra increased bone formation. In animals treated with SNAP or GSNO, there was significant potentiation of this osteogenic response. The bone formation rate in nonloaded vertebrae was unaffected by administration of the NO donors. We also found that while inhibition of either PG or NO production at the time of loading caused a partial suppression of c-fos mRNA expression in the loaded vertebrae, administration of indomethacin and NG-monomethyl-L-arginine together markedly suppressed c-fos expression. This suggests that although both PG and NO are required in mechanically induced osteogenesis, they appear to be generated largely independently of each other. Moreover, while exogenous NO potentiates the stimulatory effect of mechanical loading on bone formation, the lack of effect in nonloaded vertebrae suggests that NO is necessary but not sufficient for induction of bone formation. 相似文献

Design-build (DB) and design-bid-build (DBB) are two principal project delivery systems used in many countries. This paper reports on models constructed to predict performance of DB and DBB projects on 11 areas, using project-specific data collected from 87 building projects. The study included collecting, checking, and validating industry data, and the statistical development of multivariate linear regression models for predicting project performance. Robust models are developed to predict construction and delivery speeds of DB and DBB projects. Gross floor area of the project is the most significant factor affecting speed. Besides this, for DBB projects, contractors’ design ability, and adequacy of plant and equipment would ensure speedy completion of the projects. For DB projects, if the contract period is allowed to vary during tender evaluation, this would slow down the project. Robust models to predict turnover and system quality of DB projects are also constructed. A DB contractor’s track record is an important variable. They must have completed past projects to acceptable quality and have ability in financial, health and safety management. 相似文献

The objectives of this study were to critically review randomized controlled trials, and quantify, using meta-analysis and meta-regression, the effects of supplementation with fats on milk production and components by dairy cows. We reviewed 59 papers, of which 38 (containing 86 comparisons) met eligibility criteria. Five groups of fats were evaluated: tallows, calcium salts of palm fat (Megalac, Church and Dwight Co. Inc., Princeton, NJ), oilseeds, prilled fat, and other calcium salts. Milk production responses to fats were significant, and the estimated mean difference was 1.05 kg/cow per day, but results were heterogeneous. Milk yield increased with increased difference in dry matter intake (DMI) between treatment and control groups, decreased with predicted metabolizable energy (ME) balance between these groups, and decreased with increased difference in soluble protein percentage of the diet between groups. Decreases in DMI were significant for Megalac, oilseeds, and other Ca salts, and approached significance for tallow. Feeding fat for a longer period increased DMI, as did greater differences in the amount of soluble protein percentage of the diet between control and treatment diets. Tallow, oilseeds, and other Ca salts reduced, whereas Megalac increased, milk fat percentage. Milk fat percentage effects were heterogeneous for fat source. Differences between treatment and control groups in duodenal concentrations of C18:2 and C 18:0 fatty acids and Mg percentage reduced the milk fat percentage standardized mean difference. Milk fat yield responses to fat treatments were very variable. The other Ca salts substantially decrease, and the Megalac and oilseeds increased, fat yield. Fat yield increased with increased DMI difference between groups and was lower with an increased estimated ME balance between treatment and control groups, indicating increased partitioning of fat to body tissue reserves. Feeding fats decreased milk protein percentage, but results were heterogeneous. An increased number of milkings increased the milk protein percentage, whereas the difference between the treatment and control groups in duodenal concentrations of 18:2 fatty acids and dietary Mg concentration reduced the milk protein percentage. None of the fat treatments influenced milk protein production. The range of responses to different fats fed approached or exceeded 5 standard deviations from the mean and differed in point direction for all variables studied, indicating the varied and profound biological effects of fats. Responses to fat feeding were highly heterogeneous for all variables studied and heterogeneity was present within responses to individual fat groups. The lower DMI combined with higher milk and milk fat production showed that fats could improve the efficiency of milk production. More studies are required to more completely characterize sources of variation in responses to fats. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThis paper examines two unresolved issues regarding the nexus between financial system development and environmental quality. (i) Does the structure of the financial system matter? (ii) Is there a nonlinear relationship? We employ the newly developed dynamic common correlated effect (CCE) and the dynamic panel generalized method of moments (GMM) estimators in order to address potential endogeneity, heterogeneity and cross-sectional dependence in a panel of 58 countries. The panel data analysis reveals that the structure of the financial system matters in safeguarding environmental quality. More precisely, bank-based financial development enhances environmental quality, whereas the impact of market-based financial development is tenuous. We find some evidences of a nonlinear relationship between financial system development and environmental quality. The disaggregated data reveals the countries where financial structure matters for environmental quality, and countries where a nonlinear relationship exists between the variables. Therefore, countries that want to maintain environmental quality should strengthen the development of bank-based financial system. Moreover, effort to develop and reposition the stock markets should be prioritized in countries’ environmental policies with a view to sustaining environmental quality. 相似文献
