In this work, vinyl groups were introduced on soluble starch by reaction with 2-vinyl-4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolin-5-one. The polysaccharides obtained were characterized by 1H-NMR and DSC. The 1H-NMR spectra showed high degrees of substitution and the DSC thermograms suggest a low crystallinity in the modified starch. The modified starch was used to obtain microcapsules prepared through interfacial crosslinking with DPGDA (dipropyleneglycol diacrylate) by a water-in-oil emulsion polymerization.  相似文献

Vitamin E supplementation could elevate circulating vitamin E metabolites while modulating oxidative and inflammatory status in end-stage renal failure patients undergoing hemodialysis. Plasma concentrations of carboxyethyl-hydroxychromanols (α-and γ-CEHC), ascorbic acid, α-and γ-tocopherols, E2-isoprostanes, and inflammatory biomarkers [tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), ferritin, and C-reactive protein (CRP)] were measured in blood samples obtained from patients (n=11) before and after dialysis on two occasions prior to, and at 1 and 2 mon of daily vitamin E supplementation (400 IU RRR-α-tocopherol). Supplementation nearly doubled plasma α-tocopherol concentrations (from 18±0.5 to 31±1.7 μM, P<0.0001), whereas γ-tocopherol concentrations decreased (from 2.8±0.3 to 1.7±0.2 μM, P=0.001). Serum α-CEHC increased 10-fold from 68±3 to 771±175 nM (P<0.0001), and γ-CEHC increased from 837±164 to 1136±230 nM (P=0.008). Vitamin E supplementation also increased postdialysis hematocrits from 38±1% to 41±1% (P<0.001). Dietary antioxidant intakes (vitamins E and C) were low in most subjects; plasma ascorbic acid levels (88±27 μM) decreased significantly with dialysis (33±11 μM, P=0.01). Plasma Il-6, CRP, TNF-α, and free F2-isoprostane concentrations were elevated throughout the study. There is a complex relationship between chronic inflammation and oxidative stress that is not mitigated by short-term vitamin E supplementation. Importantly, serum vitamin E metabolite concentrations that increased 10-fold within 30 d of supplementation did not increase further, suggesting routes other than urine for removal of metabolites.  相似文献

In this paper we discuss statistical considerations regarding endpoints in preventive vaccine trials. Brief discussion is given to preclinical, Phase I, and Phase II trials, with the bulk of attention paid to endpoint choice and analysis in Phase III efficacy trials. In addition to traditional efficacy measures of vaccine effects for immunized individuals, consideration is given to waning, strain specific efficacy, correlates of protective immunity, postinfection endpoints, and cluster randomized trials.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to verify the effect of a daily intake of a new fermented soy milk produced with Enterococcus faecium and Lactobacillus jugurti on the serum lipid levels in normocholesterolemic middle-aged men. The study was randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled and was performed for a period of 6 weeks. Forty-four normocholesterolemic healthy, male volunteers, aged 40-55 years old were randomly separated in two groups: The F-group received 200 ml of the fermented product daily and the P-group received 200 ml of placebo (chemically fermented). The blood samples were drawn initially and after 3 and 6 weeks and serum values for total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglyceride were determined. The LDL-cholesterol value was estimated. No significant changes in the fermented group (F) were observed for total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol or triglyceride levels, while the HDL-cholesterol level was significantly higher (p < or = 0.05) after 6 weeks. The total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels were significantly higher (p < or = 0.05) in the placebo group (P), but no changes were found for the HDL-cholesterol and triglyceride levels during the experimental period. In conclusion, the intake of 200 ml/day of the fermented soy milk, produced with E. faecium and L. jugurti, for 6 weeks, did not affect the serum total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol, and led an increase of 10% in the HDL-cholesterol level.  相似文献

A new class of potent dopamine D(4) antagonists was discovered with selectivity over dopamine D(2) and the alpha-1 adrenoceptor. The lead compound was discovered by screening our compound collection. The structure-activity relationships of substituted isoindoline rings and the chirality about the hydroxymethyl side chain were explored. The isoindoline analogues showed modest differences in potency and selectivity. The S enantiomer proved to be the more potent enantiomer at the D(4) receptor. Several analogues with greater than 100-fold selectivity for D(4) over D(2) and the alpha-1 adrenoreceptor were discovered. Several selective analogues were active in vivo upon oral or intraperitoneal administration. A chiral synthesis starting from either D- or L-O-benzylserine is also described.  相似文献

We report an application of Kalman filtering to the inverted pendulum (IP) of the Virgo gravitational wave interferometer. Using subspace method system identification techniques, we calculated a linear mechanical model of Virgo IP from experimental transfer functions. We then developed a Kalman filter, based on the obtained state space representation, that estimates from open loop time domain data, the state variables of the system. This allows the observation (and eventually control) of every resonance mode of the IP mechanical structure independently.  相似文献

We present a simple personal computer based, synchronic detection system that emulates a lock-in amplifier at audio frequencies. The inputs of the sound card are used to acquire two sets of samples: the one to be measured, previously preamplified, and the reference. From the last one, two "quasiorthogonal" signals are derived to perform dual-phase detection. The procedure is fast and compares favorably with a benchtop lock-in amplifier. In the band from 100 Hz to 20 kHz we obtained average amplitude and phase errors below 1% and 0.1 degrees, respectively.  相似文献

Higher indoor concentrations of air pollutants due, in part, to lower ventilation rates are a potential cause of sick building syndrome (SBS) symptoms in office workers. The indoor carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration is an approximate surrogate for indoor concentrations of other occupant-generated pollutants and for ventilation rate per occupant. Using multivariate logistic regression (MLR) analyses, we evaluated the relationship between indoor CO2 concentrations and SBS symptoms in occupants from a probability sample of 41 U.S. office buildings. Two CO2 metrics were constructed: average workday indoor minus average outdoor CO2 (dCO2, range 6-418 ppm), and maximum indoor 1-h moving average CO2 minus outdoor CO2 concentrations (dCO2MAX). MLR analyses quantified dCO2/SBS symptom associations, adjusting for personal and environmental factors. A dose-response relationship (p < 0.05) with odds ratios per 100 ppm dCO2 ranging from 1.2 to 1.5 for sore throat, nose/sinus, tight chest, and wheezing was observed. We reviewed the literature on Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), ventilation, and building-related health problems in schools and identified commonly reported building-related health symptoms involving schools until 1999. We collected existing data on ventilation rates, carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and symptom-relevant indoor air contaminants, and evaluated information on causal relationships between pollutant exposures and health symptoms. Reported ventilation and CO2 data strongly indicate that ventilation is inadequate in many classrooms, possibly leading to health symptoms. Adequate ventilation should be a major focus of design or remediation efforts. Total volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde (HCHO) and microbiological contaminants are reported. Low HCHO concentrations were unlikely to cause acute irritant symptoms (<0.05 ppm), but possibly increased risks for allergen sensitivities, chronic irritation, and cancer. Reported microbiological contaminants included allergens in deposited dust, fungi, and bacteria. Levels of specific allergens were sufficient to cause symptoms in allergic occupants. Measurements of airborne bacteria and airborne and surface fungal spores were reported in schoolrooms. Asthma and 'sick building syndrome' symptoms are commonly reported. The few studies investigating causal relationships between health symptoms and exposures to specific pollutants suggest that such symptoms in schools are related to exposures to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), molds and microbial VOCs, and allergens.  相似文献

The protection of groundwater resources is of great importance in many semi-arid and sub-tropical environments. The Copperbelt of Zambia is one such environment and due to the high proportion of tailings impoundments, residue heaps, high-density informal settlements and extensive sulfidic ore deposits in the region, its groundwater resources are under threat of anthropogenic or geogenic pollution. One such pollutant plume is investigated in this study, to determine its origin, rate of progression and the environmental and health risk it poses. Geological and geochemical investigation strongly suggests an upslope tailings impoundment as the source of contaminants, with the edge of the pollution plume lying 500-700 m downstream of the impoundment. Although cobalt, nickel and zinc concentrations were elevated within the polluted groundwater, the concentrations are low as a result of sulfide precipitation and adsorption within the aquifer, and meets guidelines for drinking water quality. Attenuation of heavy metals is linked to tailings dam and aquifer pH, with the high buffering capacity of each implying that these processes of attenuation are likely to continue removing harmful metals from the aquifer. Thus, it appears unlikely that the contaminated groundwater will present a major environmental risk at this site. However, tailings impoundments are widespread throughout the Copperbelt: sites with low tailings dam buffer capacity and in catchments on crystalline bedrock geology, groundwater pollution through tailings dam leachate may liberate high concentrations of heavy metals into the shallow groundwater, potentially posing a serious human health risk to the communities using the water resources and an environmental risk to the downstream ecosystems.  相似文献
