In vitro monitored estrogenicity of municipal wastewater influent/effluent samples (collected from September to December from a Northern Canadian biological nutrient removal (BNR) treatment plant serving an urban population of 750,000) were combined with operational, wastewater quality, and climate data to determine which of these latter variables may be related to the levels and reduction in the former parameter. Significant variability was present in operational and wastewater quality parameters throughout the sampling period including a 7 degrees C difference in wastewater temperature Most of the wastewater samples collected during this period show a considerable amount of recombinant yeast assay (RYA) activity with the greatest activity (estradiol (E2)-equivalents of 106-175ng/L) seen in the final effluents collected from mid-September to mid-October. Percent reduction in the levels of RYA measured E2-equivalents varied from -234% to 75%. No correlations were seen in RYA activity reduction with percent reduction in 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD(5)), flow (i.e. inversely related to hydraulic retention time), solids retention time or even rainfall, and the reduction trends for RYA measured activity were explained best by ambient and effluent temperatures in an inverse fashion (% reduction in E2-equivalents=-10.8.(effluent temperature in degrees C)+191, p=0.005). Complementary instrumental analysis of select sample composites revealed that the free/conjugated estrogen ratio was indeed greater in the wastewater sampled during warmer temperatures.  相似文献

Many Dutch ecosystems, whether terrestrial, aquatic or sediment-based, are diffusely polluted by mixtures of contaminants, whose concentrations often exceed regulatory Safe Values or other generic quality criteria. This situation has unclear consequences, especially when local authorities are confronted with such pollution. Water managers are frequently in doubt whether their water systems satisfy the criteria for ‘Good Ecological Status’ as defined in the EU's Water Framework Directive. In case of soils, soil users may wonder whether the soil is ‘fit for use’. In case of nature conservation, the problem is that protected species might suffer from toxic stress. Official regulations in these cases call for appropriate action, but it is unclear whether the diffuse exposure causes adverse effects, and what the action should be. This paper proposes and discusses a site-oriented approach in the risk assessment of diffusely contaminated sites that can be used in addition to the compound-oriented policies from which the abovementioned generic quality criteria were derived. The site-oriented approach can be of help in reducing site-specific risks of diffuse contamination.Reflecting on the results of a large Dutch research effort in systems-oriented ecotoxicological effects, the conclusion is drawn that exposure and effects of diffuse pollution are site-specific in kind and magnitude, determined by the local combination of source-pathway-receptor issues, and often not clearly detectable (though often present). To assist in risk management, higher-tier methods can address various aspects, like addressing local mixture composition, bioavailability, and sensitivity of local species groups. Higher-tier risk assessment methods have as yet been developed mainly for cases of serious contamination, like for pesticide management and Risk-Based Land Management. For diffuse pollution, site-specific information can also be used to obtain site-specific exposure and impact information, while practical and ecology-based approaches can be introduced to obtain an integrated overview of the meaning of site contamination and to derive options for managing and reducing the local risks. These issues are discussed against the background of current major policy shifts, in The Netherlands and elsewhere, from a pollutant-oriented assessment to an additional ecological and site-oriented assessment. The latter is most clearly represented in the Good Ecological Status aim of the EU-Water Framework Directive. The paper assesses, integrates and discusses the results of the Dutch research effort in this policy context.  相似文献

Batch biological treatment of log yard run-off reduced biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and tannin and lignin (TL) concentration by 99%, 80%, and 90%, respectively. Acute (Microtox) toxicity was decreased over treatment, from an initial EC50 of 1.83% to a value of 50.4% after 48 h of treatment. Kinetics of biodegradation were determined using respirometry and fitted using the Monod and Tessier model. For the Monod model the maximum substrate uptake rate, and Ks values determined were 0.0038 mg BOD/mgVSS min, and 1.4 mg/L, respectively. The efficacy of ozone as a pre- and post- biological treatment stage was also assessed. During ozone pretreatment, TL concentration and acute toxicity were rapidly reduced by 70% and 71%, respectively. Pre-ozonation reduced BOD and COD concentration by < 10%, however a larger fraction of residual COD was non biodegradable after ozonation. Biologically treated effluent was subjected to ozonation to determine whether further improvements in effluent quality could be achieved. A reduction in COD and TL concentration was observed during ozonation, however no further improvement in toxicity was observed. Ozonation increased BOD by 38%, due to conversion of COD to BOD.  相似文献

Water fern (Azolla filiculoides Lam.) has been assessed for nitrogen and phosphorus removal in outdoor experiments comparing sewage water (S) from an experimental aquaculture plant, well water (W) and mineral growth medium Hoagland (H). The experiments were undertaken during the spring and the summer. The yield of fern biomass and nitrogenase activity was higher in H than in W and S waters. The enzyme activity had a decreasing trend with significant differences (p < 0.05) in the three waters. Peroxidase (POD) activity in April decreased with significative differences in W and S waters (p < 0.05). The electrical conductivity and the concentrations of NO3- in the three waters decreased significantly (p < 0.05). The highest removal of nitrate from the media was obtained in July. In S water, NO2- concentration decreased, while it increased in W water. PO(4)3- concentration was very low in W and S waters and decreased in H medium. The results obtained confirm the ability of the fern to grow in sewage water.  相似文献

Removal of chromium ions from aqueous solutions by using natural and crosslinked chitosan membranes was achieved using batch adsorption experiments. The effect of pH (6.0 and 2.0), concentration of chromium ions and crosslinking agents (glutaraldehyde: GLA and epichlorohydrin: ECH) on the adsorption properties of chitosan membranes was analyzed. The experimental equilibrium data was fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich models. Through the model curves, it was possible to observe that the amount of chromium ions adsorbed was significantly higher for crosslinked membranes compared to non-crosslinked chitosan. The maximum adsorbed amount was about 1400 mg g(-1) for ECH-crosslinked chitosan at pH 6.0. The adsorption rates for crosslinked chitosan membranes with glutaraldehyde and epichlorohydrin were similar for natural chitosan. Desorption study using NaCl (1 mol L(-1)) solution was performed on chitosan membranes, in order to recover chromium ions and to determine the suitable number of cycles for repeated use of these membranes without considerable decrease in their adsorption capacity. The desorption results showed that chromium ions could be more effectively removed at pH 2.0 than pH 6.0, mainly for ECH-crosslinked chitosan.  相似文献

The paper shows how polysiloxane particles encapsulating fluorophores can be successfully used to detect biotin-streptavidin binding by two types of technique. After functionalization of the particles by streptavidin, the fixation of the biomolecule can indeed be detected by a shift of the localized surface plasmon resonance of the biotinylated gold dots used as substrate and by the luminescence of the fluorophores evidenced by scanning near-field optical microscopy. The development of particles allowing such a double detection opens a route for increasing the reliability of biological detection and for multi-labelling strategies crossing both detection principles.  相似文献

The reliability of road networks depends directly on their vulnerability to disruptive incidents, ranging in severity from minor disruptions to terrorist attacks. This paper presents a game theoretic approach to the analysis of road network vulnerability. The approach posits predefined disruption, attack or failure scenarios and then considers how to use the road network so as to minimize the maximum expected loss in the event of one of these scenarios coming to fruition. A mixed route strategy is adopted, meaning that the use of the road network is determined by the worst scenario probabilities. This is equivalent to risk-averse route choice. A solution algorithm suitable for use with standard traffic assignment software is presented, thereby enabling the use of electronic road navigation networks. A variant of this algorithm suitable for risk-averse assignment is developed. A numerical example relating to the central London road network is presented. The results highlight points of vulnerability in the road network. Applications of this form of network vulnerability analysis together with improved solution methods are discussed.  相似文献

Two-phase, vertical nanocomposite heteroepitaxial films hold great promise for (multi)functional device applications. In order to achieve practical devices, a number of hurdles need to be overcome, including the creation of ordered structures (and their formation on a large scale), achieving different combinations of materials and control of strain coupling between the phases. Here we demonstrate major advances on all these fronts: remarkable spontaneously ordered structures were produced in newly predicted compositions, vertical strain was proven to dominate the strain state in films above 20 nm thickness and strain manipulation was demonstrated by selection of phases with the appropriate elastic moduli. The work opens up a new avenue for strain control in relatively thick films and also promises new forms of ordered nanostructures for multifunctional applications.  相似文献

The successful operation of spin-based data storage devices depends on thermally stable magnetic bits. At the same time, the data-processing speeds required by today's technology necessitate ultrafast switching in storage devices. Achieving both thermal stability and fast switching requires controlling the effective damping in magnetic nanoparticles. By carrying out a surface chemical analysis, we show that through exposure to ambient oxygen during processing, a nanomagnet can develop an antiferromagnetic sidewall oxide layer that has detrimental effects, which include a reduction in the thermal stability at room temperature and anomalously high magnetic damping at low temperatures. The in situ deposition of a thin Al metal layer, oxidized to completion in air, greatly reduces or eliminates these problems. This implies that the effective damping and the thermal stability of a nanomagnet can be tuned, leading to a variety of potential applications in spintronic devices such as spin-torque oscillators and patterned media.  相似文献

Layered Li0.88[Li0.18Co0.33Mn0.49]O2 nanowires are prepared using Co0.4Mn0.6O2 nanowires and lithium nitrate as precursors at 200 degrees C via a hydrothermal method for fast and high capacity Li-ion storage material. The obtained nanowires exhibit a reversible capacity of 230 mAh/g between 2 and 4.8 V, even at the high current rate of 3600 mA/g.  相似文献
