Sero-prevalence of herpes simplex virus type-2 among cancer cervix patients

Serum samples were collected from 140 cancer cervix patients aged between 25-60 years and also from 20 age matched, married, healthy women to serve as controls. These sera were tested for HSV-2 antibodies by ELISA test and HBsAg by RPHA test. HSV-2 antibodies were detected in 92 (65-71%) and HBsAg in 25 (17.8%) cancer cervix patients. Sera from control group were negative for HSV-2 antibodies and HBsAg.     

Realizing a TMN

A functional partitioning of a TMN in terms of management functional areas and functional layers is proposed. This new method for classifying TMN functions is used to suggest logical expansions of the function decomposition in ITU-T Recommendation M. 3400. The method is also shown to be a useful tool for graphically comparing the functionality of Operations Systems that are already deployed, showing how they are positioned within a real TMN. Further, the new classification scheme is applied to the representation, in tabular form, of the functions of a particular example of a deployed OS.Industry standard open interfaces using the Common Management Information Service Element (CMISE) in the context of Open Systems Interconnections (OSI) protocols and the Generic Network Information Model are also being implemented. An example of a Q3 interface (between Operations Systems and Network Elements) and an example of an X interface (between different administrative jurisdictions) are discussed.Progress is being made on infrastructure software components that will ease implementations of TMN functions in a distributed processing environment. Future directions, such as the use of evolving Open Distributed Processing (ODP) specifications in distributed network management, are discussed.     

Aerobic Alcohol Oxidation by Ruthenium Species Stabilized on Nanocrystalline Magnesium Oxide by Basic Ionic Liquids

The selective oxidation of various alcohols into their corresponding aldehydes and ketones was achieved by ruthenium species stabilized on the nanocrystalline magnesium oxide (NAP‐MgO) by the incorporation of choline hydroxide, a basic ionic liquid, in excellent yields. The procedure is simple, efficient and environmentally benign. The catalyst can be used for four cycles with almost consistent activity.     

Development of epoxy-cyanate ester-clay nanocomposites offering enhanced thermally stability

The preparation and characterization of blends of a series of dicyanate monomers such as 2,2′-bis(4-cyanatophenyl) propane (DCDPP), bis-4-cyanato-biphenyl (DCBP), bis-4-cyanatonaphthalene (DCN), 3,3′-bis(4-cyanatophenyl)sulphide (DCTDP), 3,3′-bis(4-cyanatophenyl)sulphone (DCDPS), and the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A are reported. These copolymers are combined with a montmorillionite nanoclay and both epoxy-cyanate blends and epoxy-cyanate blends-nanoclay composites are all analyzed for thermal stability, thermal degradation kinetics, flame retardancy, and impact strength. The nanocomposites are further characterized by X-ray diffraction and SEM to determine morphological features, from which structure–property relationships are determined. Dispersion of the nanoclay is of paramount importance, but its inclusion serves to improve char yield and impact strength, when this is achieved. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. MEMS tunable SOI waveguide Bragg grating filter with 1.3 THz tuning range for C-band 100 GHz DWDM optical network

A MEMS tunable integrated waveguide Bragg grating-based filter for C-band optical dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) network is presented and analyzed in this work. Waveguide Bragg grating being a notch filter in the transmission spectrum is used to realize a tunable filter by varying the applied voltages to the fixed–fixed beam loaded with this grating. The strain across the grating is enhanced by choosing MEMS beam configuration such that the metal electrode is the bottom-most layer of the composite fixed–fixed beam. Device dimensions are chosen to achieve a narrow full width half maximum of 0.77 nm, allowing filtering of adjacent channels of 100 GHz DWDM network. A large Bragg wavelength shift of 10.4 nm (1552.52–1562.92 nm) was achieved at 45.8 V actuation providing tuning for 14 DWDM channels with inter-channel cross talk below ? 21 dB, with tuning range of 1.3 THz.

     

Insight from in situ microscopy into which precipitate morphology can enable high strength in magnesium alloys

Magnesium alloys, while boasting light weight, suffer from a major drawback in their relatively low strength. Identifying the microstructural features that are most effective in strengthening is therefore a pressing challenge. Deformation twinning often mediates plastic yielding in magnesium alloys. Unfortunately, due to the complexity involved in the twinning mechanism and twin-precipitate interactions, the optimal precipitate morphology that can best impede twinning has yet to be singled out. Based on the understanding of twinning mechanism in magnesium alloys, here we propose that the lamellar precipitates or the network of plate-shaped precipitates are most effective in suppressing deformation twinning. This has been verified through quantitative in situ tests inside a transmission electron microscope on a series of magnesium alloys containing precipitates with different morphology. The insight gained is expected to have general implications for strengthening strategies and alloy design.
