Memory for individual scent in hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) as assessed by habituation methods.

The memory of hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) for the flank scent of older male hamsters was investigated in a series of habituation experiments. In 2 types of habituation tasks (Exps 1 and 2), male hamsters habituated to the flank scent of 1 male and then increased their level of investigation to that of a novel male; similar results were obtained when the intervals between trials ranged from 1 sec to 2 days. When the test trial was 10 or 21 days after habituation (Exp 3), males discriminated between familiar and novel flank scents at 10 days but not at 21 days. The results demonstrate recognition of familiar and unfamiliar individual odors and excellent memory for these differences. Habituation techniques yield extremely robust results and may be useful for investigations of other aspects of individual signatures. Initial experiences with the MR "magnitude contrast angiography of the lower extremities

45 patients with occlusive peripheral vascular disease were examined by MR angiography in a retrospective study. A FISP 3D sequence was used by acquiring a rephased and a dephased data set. The individual slices were post-processed by using a maximum-intensity-projection algorithm. The MRA results of the popliteal and tibioperoneal arteries were compared to conventional or digital angiography. In comparing these techniques MR angiography cannot be accepted for pre- and postoperative staging of patients with occlusive peripheral vascular disease. In future new MRA techniques may be useful in postoperative staging of patients with peripheral vascular stenosis.     

Maintaining global coherence during reading.

Previous research demonstrated a contradiction effect: Although text currently being processed was locally coherent, readers were aware of inconsistencies between a protagonist's actions and characteristics of the protagonists that were described earlier in the text and subsequently backgrounded. In the present experiments, not only the critical characteristics but also the protagonist were backgrounded. When the protagonist was reintroduced into the narrative in the context of carrying out an inconsistent action, the contradiction effect again occurred. In Exps 1–3, we examined the effects of several variables on the onset of the effect. In Exp 4, we presented probes at various points in the passage with results that supported the conclusion that the critical characteristics had been backgrounded before the sentence that contradicted them. Results are discussed in terms of several recent models in which currently active representational elements serve as retrieval cues for other inactive, but highly related, elements. Direct monitoring of the calcium concentration in the sarcoplasmic and endoplasmic reticulum of skeletal muscle myotubes

Direct monitoring of the free Ca2+ concentration in the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) was carried out in rat skeletal myotubes transfected with a specifically targeted aequorin chimera (srAEQ). Myotubes were also transfected with a chimeric aequorin (erAEQ) that we have demonstrated previously is retained in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Immunolocalization analysis showed that although both recombinant proteins are distributed in an endomembrane network identifiable with immature SR, the erAEQ protein was retained also in the perinuclear membrane. The difficulty of measuring [Ca2+] in 100-1000 microM range was overcome with the use of the synthetic coelenterazine analogue, coelenterazine n. We demonstrate that the steady state levels of [Ca2+] measured with srAEQ is around 300 microM, whereas that measured with erAEQ is significantly lower, i.e. around 200 microM. The effects of caffeine, high KCl, and nicotinic receptor stimulation, in the presence or absence of external calcium or after blockade of the Ca-ATPase, were investigated with both chimeras. The kinetics of [Ca2+] changes revealed by the erAEQ were similar, but not identical, neither quantitatively nor qualitatively, to those monitored with the srAEQ, indicating that at this stage of muscle development, differences exist between SR and ER in their mechanisms of Ca2+ handling. The functional implications of these findings are discussed.     

Vascular aging. Role of elastin receptor

A distinction is made between atheromatous plaque formation and arteriosclerosis, only this second process is strictly age-dependent. Interactions between lipids and constituents of the vascular wall are however involved in both processes, although by different mechanisms. The progressive increase with age of elastase activity is a second important factor in the age-dependent progression of arteriosclerosis. The fragmentation of elastic fibers produces elastin peptides, present in the circulating blood in microgram/ml conc-s, increasing in several arteriopathies. The constant presence of elastin peptides in the circulation maintains activated the elastin receptor (16) on endothelial cells producing NO* with vasorelaxing activity (18). The simultaneous production of superoxyde leads to the formation of peroxynitrate, neutralized by reduced glutathion. This process, maintained over decades may well impair the antiradical defense mechanisms of the cells and deprive the endothelium from the vasorelaxing activity of NO*. We propose therefore that the maintained activation of the elastin receptor with free radical and lytic enzyme production might well represent the initiating process underlying atherogenesis.     

Behavior of cylindrical tanks whose axes are horizontal

A cylindrical tank is mounted with its axis horizontal. Supports on either side run lengthwise. If the tank wall is thin, deformations significantly affect the stresses, so that standard stress formulae (which ignore deformations) may over-estimate stresses by a factor of ten or more. In this paper, deformations are accounted for by a nonlinear analysis. Stresses and deformed shapes are reported for various positions of the supports, radius to thickness ratios, and depths of fill.
