This article describes measurements of the surge voltage characteristics from a number of motors driven by inverter-fed drives (IFDs). The measurements were done with both laboratory and purpose-built instrumentation. Further, we discuss why certain surges deteriorate the insulation, and we give guidelines for determining which motors may be at risk of failure from IFD voltage surges. A concise analytic method is developed to investigate the arbitrary motion of a circular disk through an unbounded fluid satisfying Stokes equation. Four elementary motions are considered within the same mathematical framework: broadside translation, edgewise translation, in-plane rotation and out-of-plane rotation of a disk. Stokes equations are reduced to a set of dual integral expressions relating the velocity and traction in the plane of the disk. The dual integral equations are solved exactly for each motion and lead, in turn, to closed-form analytical expressions for the velocity and pressure fields. Detection of light in the eye underlies image-forming vision, but also regulates adaptive responses in physiology and behavior. Typically these adaptive responses do not involve image-forming vision, but depend on a relatively absolute measure of brightness (nonimage-forming irradiance detection). The goal of this study was to further understand how image-forming vision and nonimage-forming irradiance detection contribute to the effects of light on behavior. Three light dependent behaviors were assessed in wild-type, Rpe65-/- and rd1 mice. In Rpe65-/- mice, nonimage-forming irradiance detection is severely attenuated, but rod based visual acuity is relatively preserved. In rd1 mice visual acuity is nonrecordable, but nonimage-forming responses are less severely attenuated than Rpe65-/-. Positive masking, an image-forming vision dependent increase in wheel running, was absent in rd1 and restricted to higher irradiances in Rpe65-/-. Negative masking, a suppression of wheel running sensitivity with nonimage-forming irradiance detection input, was increased in rd1, but reduced in Rpe65-/- mice. By contrast, light aversion, an avoidance of brightly lit areas, was abolished in both Rpe65-/- and rd1. This shows that image-forming vision is not sufficient for light aversion, suggesting nonimage-forming irradiance detection motivates this behavior. Further, the differing effects of disease suggest that negative masking and light aversion are distinct responses with specialized nonimage-forming irradiance detection pathways. Optical frequency combs can be employed over a broad spectral range to calibrate laser frequency or vacuum wavelength. This article describes procedures and techniques utilized in the Precision Engineering Division of NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) for comb-based calibration of laser wavelength, including a discussion of ancillary measurements such as determining the mode order. The underlying purpose of these calibrations is to provide traceable standards in support of length measurement. The relative uncertainty needed to fulfill this goal is typically 10−8 and never below 10−12, very modest requirements compared to the capabilities of comb-based frequency metrology. In this accuracy range the Global Positioning System (GPS) serves as an excellent frequency reference that can provide the traceable underpinning of the measurement. Centrifuge modeling of the 17th Street Canal and Orleans Canal North levees was performed in this study. During hurricane Katrina the levees on the 17th Street Canal failed, leading to breaches in the outfall canal in the city. Two mechanisms were observed in the centrifuge modeling that could cause a breach. First, a water-filled crack formed in front of the floodwall as the water in the canal rose above the top of the levee. The levees on the 17th Street Canal, which were supported on clay foundations, failed when this cracking led to a translational (sliding) failure in the clay layer commencing at the toe of the floodwall. The levees at Orleans Canal North, where failure did not occur, were also modeled to demonstrate that the model tests could successfully simulate failure and nonfailure conditions. The centrifuge model tests identified the importance of the crack formation in relation to the stability of the floodwall. These tests also confirmed that levee geometry, floodwall depth of penetration, and the underlying soil profile were all critical to the performance of the system under flood loading. 相似文献

Hybrid architectures combining conventional processors with configurable logic resources enable efficient coordination of control with datapath computation. With integration of the two components on a single device, housekeeping tasks and, optionally, loop control and data-dependent branching, can be handled by the conventional processor, while regular datapath computation occurs on the configurable hardware. This paper describes a novel approach to programming such hybrid devices that gives the programmer control over mapping of data and computation between conventional processor and configurable logic. With a simple set of pragma and intrinsic function directives, the NAPA C language provides for manual control over perhaps the most important aspect of programming such hybrid devices. Alternatively, as experience is gained about tradeoffs between the two computational resources, mapping directives may eventually be generated by an external tool. The paper further describes a research prototype compiler that targets the hybrid processor model, with a concrete implementation for the National Semiconductor NAPA1000 chip. The NAPA C compiler parses the mapping directives, performs semantic analysis, and co-synthesizes a conventional processor executable combined with a configuration bit stream for the configurable logic. A high-finesse optical filter can be constructed by cascading two moderate-finesse Fabry-Perot filters of different free spectral ranges. Methods for controlling the undesirable interactions within the interfilter cavity are studied. In particular, the use of an isolator, an attenuator, or a length of fiber longer than the coherence length of the light sources used is considered. Daily life events of 79 married men (average age 43.2 yrs) were grouped according to their life content area and according to the desirability of the event as rated by the S. Associations among event groupings and concurrently measured daily mood were examined. As in studies of major life events, some event classifications were more strongly associated with mood than were others. Specifically, desirable family-leisure events and undesirable work events were strongly related to mood.
