There has lately been a renewed interest in Riboflavin owing to insight into its recognition as an essential component of cellular biochemistry. The knowledge of the mechanisms and regulation of intestinal absorption of riboflavin and its health implications has significantly been expanded in recent years. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the importance of riboflavin, its absorption and metabolism in health and diseased conditions, its deficiency and its association with various health diseases, and metabolic disorders. Efforts have been made to review the available information in literature on the relationship between riboflavin and various clinical abnormalities. The role of riboflavin has also been dealt in the prevention of a wide array of health diseases like migraine, anemia, cancer, hyperglycemia, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and oxidative stress directly or indirectly. The riboflavin deficiency has profound effect on iron absorption, metabolism of tryptophan, mitochondrial dysfunction, gastrointestinal tract, brain dysfunction, and metabolism of other vitamins as well as is associated with skin disorders. Toxicological and photosensitizing properties of riboflavin make it suitable for biological use, such as virus inactivation, excellent photosensitizer, and promising adjuvant in chemo radiotherapy in cancer treatment. A number of recent studies have indicated and highlighted the cellular processes and biological effects associated with riboflavin supplementation in metabolic diseases. Overall, a deeper understanding of these emerging roles of riboflavin intake is essential to design better therapies for future. 相似文献

A rapid method for qualitative and quantitative assaying of l ‐lactate in milk is described. The method is based on oxidation of lactate by lactate oxidase with the simultaneous formation of H2O2 which subsequently oxidises 2, 4, 6‐tribromo 3‐hydroxy benzoic acid (TBHBA) in the presence of peroxidase. Oxidised TBHBA then reacts with 4‐amino antipyrine to obtain magenta colour (λmax = 523 nm). In the qualitative assay, colour change becomes visible in raw milk samples spiked with 300 mg lactate/L. The absorbance increases linearly up to 1000 mg/L. The method can be used for rapid assessment of the hygienic quality of milk. 相似文献

An experimental investigation has been carried out to study the heat transfer and friction factor characteristics of a V-down-perforated baffled roughened solar air heater duct. The roughened wall was uniformly heated and the rest three walls of the duct were kept insulated. Measurements have been carried out for the duct aspect ratio of 10, Reynolds number range of 3800–19,000, relative hole position range of 0.429–0.571, relative roughness pitch range of 2–4, and open area ratio range of 12–44%. The relative roughness height of 0.4 and angle of attack of 60° are kept constant during the entire experimentation. The heat transfer and friction factor data obtained were compared with the data obtained from a smooth duct under similar operating conditions. In comparison to the smooth duct the V-shaped perforated baffle roughened duct enhanced the Nusselt number and friction factor by 2.57 and 5.96 times, respectively. The thermohydraulic performance parameter is found superior for the open area ratio of 24% and relative roughness pitch of 2.5. 相似文献

ABSTRACTWe examined the in vitro permeation of central nervous stimulants—caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine across human skin with the aid of six chemical enhancers. It was found that oleic acid was the most potent enhancer for all three methylxanthines. Further optimization studies with different solvents showed that caffeine transport could be enhanced to give flux values up to 585 μg/cm2.hr?1. Theobromine and theophylline delivery rates proved insufficient. An additional study involving a buccal tissue equivalent showed that this membrane was more permeable than skin for all model actives tested and would offer an alternate way of delivery. 相似文献

The reduction of graphene oxide (GO) by phytochemicals was investigated using aqueous leaf extracts of Colocasia esculenta and Mesua ferrea Linn. and an aqueous peel extract of orange (Citrus sinensis). The prepared GO and phytoextract reduced GO (RGO) were characterized by ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared analyses to provide a clear indication of the removal of oxygen-containing groups from the graphene and the formation of RGO. The extent of reduction was determined from elemental analysis. Formation of few layers of graphene was indicated by transmission electron microscopy. The obtained RGO exhibited good specific capacitance (17–21 Fg?1), high electrical conductivity (3032.6–4006 Sm?1) and high carbon to oxygen ratio (5.97–7.11). 相似文献

This work investigates oxidative decolorization of two different dyes, Methylene blue and Titan yellow in aqueous solution using an environmentally friendly advanced electro-chemical oxidation (electro-Fenton) process. The effect of operating conditions like H2O2 concentration, current density, initial dye concentration was studied in a batch stirred cell. Individual decolorization decay kinetics for both dyes was investigated. The second-order absolute rate constants (L mol?1 s?1) between hydroxyl radical and dye have been calculated from experimental data by fitting it to the decolorization model. The apparent kinetic constants, k app (s?1) for Methylene blue and Titan yellow dye decolorization were also determined. The experimental data showed a good fit to the theoretical model, which can predict data in a wide range of % dye decolorization. This process also reduces COD of the dye solution, and the unit energy demand (UED) in kWh/kg COD removed for different electrical current has been reported. 相似文献

In order to study structural, thermal and optical behavior, thin flat samples of polyethersulfone were irradiated with oxygen and silicon ions. The changes in properties were analyzed using different techniques viz: X-ray diffraction, thermo-gravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared, UV-visible and photoluminescence spectroscopy. A noticeable increase in the intensity of X-ray diffraction peaks was observed after irradiation with 84 MeV oxygen ions at low and medium fluences, which may be attributed to radiation-induced cross-linking in polymer. Fourier transform infrared and thermo-gravimetric analysis corroborated the results of X-ray diffraction analysis. No noticeable change in the Fourier transform infrared spectra of oxygen ion irradiated polyethersulfone were observed even at the highest fluence of 1 × 1013 ions cm−2, but after irradiation with silicon ions, a reduction in intensity of almost all characteristic bands was revealed. An increase in the activation energy of decomposition of polyethersulfone was observed after irradiation with 84 MeV oxygen ions up to medium fluences but degradation was revealed at higher fluences. The objectives of this study were to determine and compare the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter species in swine reared in conventional and antimicrobial-free (ABF) production systems. Campylobacter coli was the predominant species, with 1,459 isolates (99%) in the study. We found significantly higher prevalence of C. coli on the ABF farms (77.3%) than on the conventional farms (27.6%) among pigs at the nursery stage (P < 0.001). At slaughter, we found significantly higher prevalence at the postevisceration than at the preevisceration stage (P < 0.001) in both production systems. The 1,459 C. coli isolates were tested with the agar dilution method for their susceptibility to six antimicrobials: chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, gentamicin, nalidixic acid, and tetracycline. Resistance was most prevalent against tetracycline (66.2% of isolates) followed by erythromycin (53.6% of isolates). Frequency of resistance to these two antimicrobials was significantly higher among conventional herds (83.4% for tetracycline and 77% for erythromycin) than among ABF herds (56.2% for tetracycline and 34.5% for erythromycin). Resistance to ciprofloxacin at the MIC (> 4 mg/liter) was also found on farms in both systems. Multidrug-resistant C. coli strains were detected in both the conventional (7%) and ABF (4%) herds. This is the first report of ciprofloxacin-resistant strains of C. coli in ABF pigs in the United States. These findings highlight the high prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant C. coli in both conventional and ABF pig production systems and have significant implications for the persistence of antimicrobial-resistant Campylobacter in the pig production environment regardless of levels of antimicrobial use. 相似文献
