Increased capacity for glycolytic metabolism is a well-known characteristic of neoplastic cells. Because lactic acid is the end product of glycolysis, in vivo MRS measurements of tumor lactate concentration ([lac]t) may provide valuable information about tumor metabolism, which will aid the development of therapies and the clinical diagnosis and treatment of tumors. In the present study, several hemodynamic and histologic parameters were evaluated with respect to their influence on [lac]t. Pronounced differences in [lac]t in two distinct populations of tumors suggested a putative perfusion threshold. Above this threshold, [lac]t was independent of hemodynamic and histologic factors including tumor blood flow (measured using MRS and the method of D2O washout), extent of necrosis and inflammatory cell infiltrate. Thus, for most tumors, [lac]t was not determined by any one single factor such as hypoxia, venous clearance, glucose supply, extent of necrosis or degree of inflammatory cell infiltrate. Rather, [lac]t may be equilibrated, at least in part, by an interplay of forces involving hemodynamics and substrate supply. In general, the data are consistent with the hypothesis that elevated lactate in most tumors is related to the high glycolytic activity of adequately perfused, viable neoplastic cells. 相似文献

An electrodynamic balance was used to levitate a single methanol droplet while it evaporated down to, and just beyond, its first encountered Coulomb fission limit as ascertained by the time dependence of its laser light scatter signal. At its Coulomb limit, the primary droplet fragmented and approximately 81% of its net charge was released in the form of small droplets that are termed progeny. The window of time over which the progeny droplets were ejected from the electrodynamic balance was deltat = 850 ms, indicating that these droplets were formed with a range of mass-to-charge values. An average of 13.2 (+/-4.4) progeny droplets were detected as a result of this fragmentation event. On the assumption that the average initial radius of the progeny droplets were one-tenth the radius of the droplet undergoing the Coulomb fission event, approximately 50% of the total net charge ejected would not have been carried by the 13 progeny droplets detected. 相似文献

Perspective is an optional subject for students of some levels in Dutch secondary schools. A proper final task on this subject
is the analysis of existing perspective drawings or paintings. This task is sometimes supplemented by a more creative and
challenging assignment, that is, the design and construction of a perspective box. A perspective box is an empty box with,
on the inner sides, perspective pictures giving a surprising spatial effect when observed through the peephole. The students
who take up the challenge are in the first place inspired by the six still existing antique wooden perspective boxes, especially
because they were created by Dutch seventeenth-century painters of architecture and interiors. In this article the setup of

The problem of optimal sensor locations in nonparametric identification of viscoelastic materials is considered. Sensor locations have previously been assigned in an ad hoc manner, resulting in a sub-optimal experiment design with a comparatively high variance of the estimates. Different scalar criteria of the covariance matrix, connected to A- and D-optimal experiment design, are considered and evaluated. The results indicate that the accuracy of the estimates can be greatly improved by the use of optimally placed sensors. The theoretical study has been verified by experiments. When varistors are subject to very short (˜1 μ s), high-current pulses, they occasionally fracture. We attribute the occurrence of fracture to stress waves, created by inertial forces in response to the rapid Joule heating, causing the propagation of preexisting microstructural flaws. The amplitude of the stress oscillation is shown to be proportional to the second derivative of temperature with respect to time which, in turn, is directly related to the rate of increase of power. An upper limit for the magnitude of the peak stress is derived in terms of material parameters, varistor geometry, and the maximum electrical power. From the magnitude of the peak stress, a critical defect size is estimated which will cause fracture under given pulse conditions. Conclusions for the design and testing of varistors are drawn. 相似文献

The hypothesis that music training can improve verbal memory was tested in children. The results showed that children with music training demonstrated better verbal but not visual memory than did their counterparts without such training. When these children were followed up after a year, those who had begun or continued music training demonstrated significant verbal memory improvement. Students who discontinued the training did not show any improvement. Contrary to the differences in verbal memory between the groups, their changes in visual memory were not significantly different. Friction between crystalline bodies is described in a model that unifies elements of dislocation drag, contact mechanics,
and interface theory. An analytic expression for the friction force between solids suggests that dislocation drag accounts
for many of the observed phenomena related to solid–solid sliding. Included in this approach are strong arguments for agreement
with friction dependence on temperature, velocity, orientation, and more general materials selection effects. It is shown
that calculations of friction coefficients for sliding contacts are in good agreement with available experimental values reported
from ultrahigh vacuum experiments. Extensions of this model include solutions for common types of dislocation barriers or
defects. The effects of third-body solid lubricants, superplasticity, superconductivity, the Aubry transition, and supersonic

Aloe vera (AV) is one of the medicinal herbs with a well-established spectrum of wound healing, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory property. AV-mediated therapeutics present significant tissue regenerative activity by modulating the inflammatory and proliferative phases of wound healing. The purpose of the present work was to combine the biological properties of AV and the advantages of electrospun meshes to prepare a potent transdermal biomaterial. The polycaprolactone (PCL) containing 5 and 10 wt % of lyophilized powder of AV was studied for electrospinning into nanoscale fiber mats and compared with PCL/Collagen blend for dermal substitutes. SEM revealed the average diameters of PCL, PCL-AV 5 %, PCL-AV 10 % and PCL/Collagen nanofiber scaffolds in the range of 519 ± 28, 264 ± 46, 215 ± 63 and 249 ± 52 nm, respectively. PCL-AV 10 % nanofiber scaffolds showed finer fiber morphology with improved hydrophilic properties and higher tensile strength of 6.28 MPa with a Young’s modulus of 16.11 MPa desirable for skin tissue engineering. The nanofibers were then used to investigate differences in biological responses in terms of proliferation and cell morphology of mice dermal fibroblasts. It was found that PCL-AV 10 % nanofibrous matrix favored cell proliferation compared to other scaffolds which almost increased linearly by (p ≤ 0.01) 17.79 % and (p ≤ 0.01) 21.28 % compared to PCL on sixth and ninth day. CMFDA dye expression, secretion of collagen and F-actin expression were significantly increased in PCL-AV 10 % scaffolds compared to other nanofibrous scaffolds.
