This paper presents a methodology for assessing the variability of biodegradable chemical oxygen demand (COD) fractions in urban wastewaters. Thirteen raw wastewater samples from combined and separate sewers feeding the same plant were characterised, and two optimisation procedures were applied in order to evaluate the variability in biodegradable fractions and related kinetic parameters. Through an overall optimisation on all the samples, a unique kinetic parameter set was obtained with a three-substrate model including an adsorption stage. This method required powerful numerical treatment, but improved the identifiability problem compared to the usual sample-to-sample optimisation. The results showed that the fractionation of samples collected in the combined sewer was much more variable (standard deviation of 70% of the mean values) than the fractionation of the separate sewer samples, and the slowly biodegradable COD fraction was the most significant fraction (45% of the total COD on average). Because these samples were collected under various rain conditions, the standard deviations obtained here on the combined sewer biodegradable fractions could be used as a first estimation of the variability of this type of sewer system. 相似文献

The success of dental implants is related to the amount, quality, and composition of the alveolar bone. The placement of platelet‐rich fibrin (PRF) clot associated with a resorbable collagen membrane (RCM) in a postextraction alveolus is a technique used for ridge preservation. This case report study analyzed the ultrastructural characteristics of cross‐sectioned alveolar bone that received PRF and RCM using scanning electron microscopy and the inorganic composition using “energy dispersive X‐ray spectrometry,” in order to explore the feasibility of this method to clinical studies. Three alveolar bone samples from two male patients (37 and 58 years old), obtained in the procedure of placing the dental implant, were analyzed. Two bone samples previously received PRF and RCM (M37 and M58), the third sample represented a physiological bone formation without treatment (M37‐control). The bone sample M37 showed irregularly shaped islets of calcified material intermingled with connective tissue. The other samples, from the 58‐year‐old patient with PRF and RCM (M58); and the other untreated bone sample from the same 37‐year‐old patient (M37‐control) showed similar ultrastructural morphology with trabecular conformation without islets agglomerations. The inorganic composition analysis showed higher concentrations of calcium and phosphorus in both samples treated with PRF and RCM in comparison to the untreated bone sample. The Ca/P ratio was higher in the M37 sample compared to the others samples. The results showed morphology and inorganic composition differences among the treatments used, suggesting that this method is feasible to analyze parameters of the alveolar bone tissue. 相似文献

In this paper, a model based on a population balance equation (PBE) is developed. It aims at reproducing experimental floc size distributions obtained at steady state in a jar-test. The objective is to develop a simple model, based on physical phenomena, and that does not contain any adjustable parameters. Floc size distributions obtained using a part of a particle image velocimetry (PIV) device and image analysis are used to develop mathematical expressions for the aggregation and breakage kernels. A critical volume beyond which breakage is of significant importance is identified and related to the hydrodynamics. Hydrodynamic sequencing allows the distribution of the daughter particles resulting from a breakage event to be established. The model is finally successfully validated against experimental results. 相似文献

In the framework of an evolutionary study, trail pheromones have been studied in the most basal extant termite, Mastotermes darwiniensis (Mastotermitidae), and two other basal termites, the Termopsidae Porotermes adamsoni (Porotermitinae) and Stolotermes victoriensis (Stolotermitinae). Although workers of M. darwiniensis do not walk in single file while exploring a new environment under experimental conditions and are unable to follow artificial
trails in ‘open field’ experiments, they do secrete a trail-following pheromone from their sternal glands. This unique behavior
might reflect a primitive function of communication of the sternal gland. The major component of the pheromone appears to
be the same in the three basal species: the norsesquiterpene alcohol (E)-2,6,10-trimethyl-5,9-undecadien-1-ol. This represents a new chemical category of trail-following pheromones for termites.
The quantity of pheromone was estimated as 20 pg/individual in M. darwiniensis, 700 pg/individual in P. adamsoni, and 4 pg/individual in S. victoriensis. The activity threshold was 1 ng/cm in M. darwiniensis and 10 pg/cm in P. adamsoni. In M. darwiniensis, the trail pheromone was secreted by sternal gland 4 and to a lesser degree by sternal gland 3, sternal gland 5 being almost
inactive. This study highlighted phylogenetic relationships between the Mastotermitidae and two subfamilies of the Termopsidae,
the Porotermitinae and the Stolotermitinae. Furthermore, it indicated a heterogeneity within the Termopsidae, with Porotermitinae
and Stolotermitinae on one hand, and Termopsinae on the other. Finally, Mastotermitidae and Termopsidae, with C14 trail pheromones,

The challenges of implementing biorefineries on a global scale include socioeconomic, financial, and technological constraints. In particular, the development of biorefineries is tightly linked to the continued availability of fermentation raw materials. These constraints can be relaxed by the use of diverse raw materials, while advances that confer higher flexibility would enable biotechnological plant managers to swiftly react to volatile markets. In conventional processes, Saccharomyces cerevisiae grows on a relatively limited range of substrates, and produces only a single product—ethanol. Given the observed maturity of the S. cerevisiae fermentation technology, alternatives to baker's yeast may be needed to tip the economic balance in favour of biotechnological ethanol. These alternative fermentation technologies may allow a greater diversity of substrates to be used to produce an individually tailored mix of ethanol and other chemicals. The micro-pulling-down technique has been applied to produce undoped and 0.1% Nd3+ -doped Y3 Al5 O12 garnet single-crystal fibers with controlled diameter. The hot zone construction and fiber-pulling conditions have been optimized. As a result, growth of transparent and homogeneous fiber crystals has been achieved. The crystals have been grown under 105 Pa (1 atm) of argon atmosphere, with the pulling rate varied in the range of 0.3–2.0 mm/min. One hundred percent of the starting melt has been normally transformed into a crystalline material, with an empty crucible ready for the next growth procedure. Two n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA)‐rich diets differing in their chemical and physical forms were given to rats during 2 wk. Liposomes [phospholipids (PL) organized in bilayer structures] made from a natural marine lipid extract or a mixture of fats containing fish oil [similar fatty acids esterified in triacylglycerols (TAG)] were used. The influence of n‐3 PUFA dietary sources on plasma parameters, i.e. TAG, cholesterol and PL concentrations, was investigated. A similar hypotriglyceridemic effect of n‐3 PUFA from liposomes or fish oil was observed. In contrast, feeding rats with liposomes led to different PL and cholesterol patterns. In the plasma of rats fed liposomes, total cholesterol amounts were positively correlated with PL levels. Liposome and fish oil feedings caused a marked increase in the amounts of n‐3 PUFA, which occurred mainly at the expense of n‐6 PUFA. However, the enrichment in n‐3 PUFA in the different plasma lipid classes differed substantially when ingested in the form of fish oil or liposomes. These results were interpreted in terms of different lipid bioavailability and metabolic fate during the digestive steps and in the liver, with the dietary source. 相似文献

Triblock copolymers composed of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(propylene oxide) (PPO), present an amphiphilic character in aqueous solution. Since PPO is less hydrophilic than PEO and since their solubilities decrease when the temperature increases, the copolymers self-assemble spontaneously, forming micelles at moderate temperature. For higher temperature or concentration, these solutions can form lyotropic liquid crystalline phases. In order to improve their properties for particular applications, these solutions are often used in the presence of salts. The influence of the salts nature is qualitatively well described for linear copolymer solutions of PEO-PPO-PEO type. The presence of a ‘salting out’ electrolyte shifts the cloud point and the critical micelle temperature to lower temperature while ‘salting in’ electrolyte induces opposite effects. In this article, we study the influence of the presence of sodium chloride (NaCl) on the structure of aqueous solutions of a four-branched copolymer. First, we show by viscosimetric studies that NaCl has a ‘salting out’ effect with these star copolymers as with theirs linear counterparts. Secondly, small angle neutron scattering studies make it possible to determine quantitatively the influence of the NaCl amount on the equilibrium unimers-micelles. These experiments allow obtaining the radius of micelles, their volume fraction and their aggregation number. These informations are compared with the data obtained with salt-free solutions. SANS results are also used to demonstrate that the micelles form bcc polycrystals in a significant zone of the phase diagram. The cell parameter of these crystals is determined according to the salinity of the solution. At last, we observe that the solution presents at high temperature a phase separation. Our results show clearly that this phenomenon is due to the dehydration of the PEO external layer of the micelles. 相似文献
