Structural engineering education has been based historically on specialization within the framework of a four-year undergraduate degree in civil engineering. Many practitioners, however, are concerned that modern civil engineering curricula are not meeting the needs of the structural engineering profession. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the conversation about undergraduate education and the increased technical skills requested by the structural engineering profession. Problem-based learning is presented as a strategy for expanding the civil engineering curriculum to include concentrated study and a problem-solving experience, as well as engaging students in the process of learning how to learn. The paper reports on our experience in incorporating problem-based learning within a senior-year project. The conclusions discuss the challenges of extending this learning format to additional students. 相似文献

The kinetics of Cu(II) reduction and its relationship to the process of low density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation were investigated in isolated human LDL incubated with CuSO4 by using the Cu(I) chelator and indicator dye bathocuproine disulfonate (BC). The inclusion of BC in the incubation medium containing isolated LDL and different concentrations of CuSO4 revealed a biphasic kinetics of Cu(II) reduction consisting of an early phase followed by a plateau phase and a subsequent extensive reduction phase. The amount of Cu(I) formed during the early phase, as well as the rate of its generation, were strictly dependent on both the level of Cu(II) available (saturation was observed at 20 and 50 microM CuSO4) and the concentration of alpha-tocopherol within native LDL particles. Artificial enrichment of LDL with different concentrations of alpha-tocopherol led to a parallel increase of both the amount of Cu(II) reduced and the rate of reduction. The late phase of Cu(II) reduction was strictly related to the availability of copper but was largely independent from alpha-tocopherol. Neither the amount of Cu(I) generated nor the rate of generation were saturated at concentrations of copper up to 100 microM. Comparable results were obtained by adding BC at different time-points to the LDL-copper mixture, in order to measure at the same time-points both the true rate of Cu(II) reduction and the generation of TBARS during the dynamic process of LDL oxidation. The rate of Cu(II) reduction was already high during the lag-phase of the LDL oxidation profile and progressively decreased as alpha-tocopherol concentration decreased. The subsequent increase in the rate of Cu(II) reduction paralleled the formation of TBARS during the extensive LDL oxidation phase. These results suggest that different mechanisms of Cu(II) reduction, namely alpha-tocopherol-dependent and independent (likely lipid peroxide-dependent), are progressively recruited during copper-promoted LDL oxidation. 相似文献

The role of psychologists in psychiatric settings has evolved over the past century from primarily conducting psychological evaluations to being the vital and integral link (sometimes the only such link) to the delivery of scientifically sound assessment and treatment methods. Consequently, the role of the psychologist, with respect to the scientist-practitioner model, has expanded to include collaborator with, consultant to, and teacher of our colleagues in psychiatry. In the integrated areas of research and treatment of anxiety disorders, psychologists have been at the forefront of developing, evaluating, and disseminating empirically supported methods for the range of these conditions in children, adolescents, and adults. Issues common to psychologists practicing in psychiatric settings are discussed in this article, specifically with reference to the tasks and issues encountered by the anxiety specialist. In order to increase the understanding of blood cytopenias in HIV infection we have investigated the bone marrow in murine AIDS. C57BL/6 mice infected with the LP-BM5 retrovirus show a decrease in cellularity, numerous haemophagocytic histiocytes, a reduction of all erythroid precursor cells, an increase in eosinophil number and an increase in lymphocytes. Immunostaining with an anti-Pr60gag antibody shows that the majority of bone marrow cells express the viral protein. Thus, the bone marrow in MAIDS has many similarities with the bone marrow from patients with advanced AIDS and may prove useful as a model for therapy aimed at treating blood cytopenias. 相似文献

A direct casting process was used to produce porous 3Y–ZrO2 ceramics using starch as a fugitive filler and binder. The compositions with low additions of starch had higher porosity than the volume fraction of starch initially in the green body (Xst), whereas, the compositions with high amounts of starch produced lower porosity than the predicted value. The well ordered structure consisted of spherical pores of 8–10 μm diameter, retained from the original starch particles, connected by channels. The interconnection between pores was dependent on the volume fraction of starch incorporated, as well as on the sintering temperature. Pore interconnection was observed for all the compositions sintered at 1000–1300 °C. Increasing the sintering temperature to 1400–1500 °C produced a marked dependence of the open to total porosity ratio on Xst. For a high porosity material, a bimodal channel size distribution was found at 1400 and 1500 °C. The primary pore channel diameter was 0.7 μm and the secondary one was close to 4 μm. As the sintering temperature increased, the volume of the connecting channels decreased; at 1500 °C only a minor volume of the larger channels was found. 相似文献

This study investigates the effectiveness and multitargeted activity of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) as antioxidant in vivo. A single dose of DHEA was given IP to male rats. Liver and brain microsomes, and plasma low density lipoprotein (LDL), were isolated from rats sacrificed 17 h later. Liver and brain microsomes were challenged with CuSO(4) and, as index of lipid peroxidation, the production of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) was measaured. Also, plasma low-density lipoprotein (LDL) were challenged with copper and the time course of lipid peroxidation was evaluated following the formation of conjugated dienes. The onset of TBARS generation induced by copper was marked delayed in both liver and brain microsomes from DHEA-treated animals. Also, the resistance of LDL to oxidation, expressed by the duration of the lag-phase of the kinetic curve, was significantly enhanced in DHEA-treated rats. Results indicate that in vivo DHEA supplementation makes subcellular fractions isolated from different tissues and plasma constituents (LDL) more resistant to lipid peroxidation triggered by copper. The antioxidant effect on plasma LDL might be of special relevance to the proposed antiatherogenic activity of DHEA. Moreover, multitargeted antioxidant activity of DHEA might protect tissues from oxygen radicals damage. 相似文献

AbstractA unique type of subcontexts is always present in formal contexts with many concepts: the contranominal scales. We make this precise by giving an upper bound for the number of minimal generators (and thereby for the number of concepts) of contexts without contranominal scales larger than a given size. We give an interpretation of this bound in terms of the Vapnik–Chervonenkis dimension of the concept lattice. Extremal contexts are constructed which meet this bound exactly.
