The risk of cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis progression is significantly increased after menopause, probably due to the decrease of estrogen levels. The use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for prevention of cardiovascular disease in older postmenopausal failed to meet expectations. Phytoestrogens may induce some improvements in climacteric symptoms, but their effect on the progression of atherosclerosis remains unclear. The reduction of cholesterol accumulation at the cellular level should lead to inhibition of the atherosclerotic process in the arterial wall. The inhibition of intracellular lipid deposition with isoflavonoids was suggested as the effective way for the prevention of plaque formation in the arterial wall. The aim of this double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study was to investigate the effect of an isoflavonoid-rich herbal preparation on atherosclerosis progression in postmenopausal women free of overt cardiovascular disease. One hundred fifty-seven healthy postmenopausal women (age 65 ± 6) were randomized to a 500 mg isoflavonoid-rich herbal preparation containing tannins from grape seeds, green tea leaves, hop cone powder, and garlic powder, or placebo. Conventional cardiovascular risk factors and intima-media thickness of common carotid arteries (cIMT) were evaluated at the baseline and after 12 months of treatment. After 12-months follow-up, total cholesterol decreased by 6.3% in isoflavonoid-rich herbal preparation recipients (p = 0.011) and by 5.2% in placebo recipients (p = 0.020); low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol decreased by 7.6% in isoflavonoid-rich herbal preparation recipients (p = 0.040) and by 5.2% in placebo recipients (non-significant, NS); high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol decreased by 3.4% in isoflavonoid-rich herbal preparation recipients (NS) and by 4.5% in placebo recipients (p = 0.038); triglycerides decreased by 6.0% in isoflavonoid-rich herbal preparation recipients (NS) and by 7.1% in placebo recipients (NS). The differences between lipid changes in the isoflavonoid-rich herbal preparation and placebo recipients did not reach statistical significance (p > 0.05). Nevertheless, the mean cIMT progression was significantly lower in isoflavonoid-rich herbal preparation recipients as compared to the placebo group (6 μm, or <1%, versus 100 μm, or 13%; p < 0.001 for the difference). The growth of existing atherosclerotic plaques in isoflavonoid-rich herbal preparation recipients was inhibited by 1.5-fold (27% versus 41% in the placebo group). The obtained results demonstrate that the use of isoflavonoid-rich herbal preparation in postmenopausal women may suppress the formation of new atherosclerotic lesions and reduce the progression of existing ones, thus promising new drug for anti-atherosclerotic therapy. Solvent-based preliminary treatments were carried out on polyamide fabrics to be coated with a thin layer of electrically conducting doped polypyrrole, with the aim of improving the adhesion of the conducting layer to the fibre substrate. Polyamide fabrics were treated with dilute formic acid, pure tetrachloroethylene and ethanol/water at different temperatures and times. After the treatments, the fabrics were coated with polypyrrole by in situ chemical oxidative polymerisation. The adhesion of the PPy layer was evaluated by means of surface resistivity measurements, SEM investigation and ATR FT-IR analysis after Martindale abrasion tests. The adhesion of PPy layer on the fibre surface was strongly improved by the solvent treatments, in particular with ethanol and tetrachloroethylene. The surface resistivity of the ethanol-treated fabrics did not change after more than 200 abrasion cycles and the PPy layer linked to the fibre surface was observed by SEM and ATR FT-IR also after 4000 abrasion cycles. 相似文献

This paper focuses on the suitability of using a Sieverts-type empirical law to describe hydrogen permeation through Pd-based membranes in the presence of both concentration-dependent hydrogen transport through the selective layer – referred to as “non-ideal” behaviour – and external mass transfer resistance. In particular, the functionality of the pressure exponent with temperature, pressure and membrane thickness is provided, showing that the Sieverts-type empirical law can be used to incorporate the external mass transfer influence just up to a moderate external resistance. The explanation for this fact is recognised in the inadequacy of the Sieverts-type empirical law to describe the behaviour of the flux limited by external resistance for a sufficiently large permeation driving force. The methodology described in this paper is effective also when the permeation-determining steps cannot be established, helping researchers to a correct interpretation of permeation tests in the presence of severe mass transfer resistance. 相似文献

CoNiCrAlY coatings were produced by means of the vacuum plasma spraying (VPS) process onto CMSX-4 single crystal nickel superalloy
disk substrates. As-sprayed samples were annealed at high temperatures in low vacuum. Three kinds of finishing processes were
carried out, producing three types of samples: as-sprayed, mechanically smoothed by grinding, ground and PVD coated by using
aluminum targets in an oxygen atmosphere. Samples were tested under isothermal conditions, in air, at 1000 °C, and up to 5000 h.
Morphological, microstructural and compositional analyses were performed on the coated samples in order to assess the high
temperature oxidation behavior provided by the three different surface finishing processes. Several differences were observed:
grinding operations decrease the oxidation resistance, whereas the PVD process can increase the performances over longer time

Deciduous trees remobilize the nitrogen in leaves during the process of autumn coloration, thus providing a high quality food
source for aphids preparing to lay over-wintering eggs. It has been suggested that aphids may use volatile organic compounds
(VOCs) to: (a) select leaves where nutrient remobilization has started and induced defenses are reduced; and (b) detect the
time of leaf abscission. We analyzed VOCs emitted by the foliage of Betula pendula Roth. during autumn coloration and from leaf litter just after leaf fall. We tested the hypothesis that costly, photosynthesis-related
terpenes and other herbivore-induced VOCs related to attraction of aphid parasitoids and predators are reduced during the
coloration process. We also investigated if the VOC emission profile of abscising leaves is different from that of early stage
yellowing leaves. Enemy-luring compounds (E)-β-ocimene, linalool, and (E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene (DMNT) were emitted only from the green foliage. Methyl salicylate (MeSa), known to recruit
predatory bugs and attract migrant aphids, was emitted until the first stage of color change. Cis-3-hexenol, an indicator of cellular disintegration, became dominant in the emissions from abscising leaves and from fresh
leaf litter. We discuss the ecological significance of the observed changes in birch leaf VOC profiles during the process

We discuss an interpretation of the mixture transition distribution (MTD) for discrete‐valued time series which is based on a sequence of independent latent variables which are occasion‐specific. We show that, by assuming that this latent process follows a first order Markov Chain, MTD can be generalized in a sensible way. A class of models results which also includes the hidden Markov model (HMM). For these models we outline an EM algorithm for the maximum likelihood estimation which exploits recursions developed within the HMM literature.
