Substantial evidence now exists indicating that the neurotrophins, a family of growth factors required for the survival, development, and differentiation of various neuronal populations of the nervous system, are also important for the development of nonneuronal tissues. Such a function was first suggested by studies showing the presence of high-affinity neurotrophin receptors in a variety of nonneuronal tissues including those of the cardiovascular, endocrine, immune, and reproductive systems. Within the latter, the gonads appear to be a preferential site of neurotrophin action as suggested by the presence in the mammalian ovary of at least four of the five known neurotrophins and all of the neurotrophin receptors thus far identified. While the various functions that the neurotrophins may have in the ovary are still being elucidated, it is now clear that in addition to recruiting the ovarian innervation, they play a direct role in the regulation of two different maturational periods that are critical for the acquisition of female reproductive function: early follicular development and ovulation. Neurotrophins facilitate the development of newly formed follicles by promoting the initial differentiation and the subsequent growth of primordial follicles. These actions appear to be related to the ability of neurotrophins to sustain the proliferation of both mesenchymal and granulosa cells, and to induce the synthesis of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) receptors. At the time of the first ovulation, neurotrophins contribute to the ovulatory cascade by increasing prostaglandin E(2) release, reducing gap junction communication, and inducing cell proliferation within the thecal compartment of preovulatory follicles. 相似文献

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the following questions: how does the average-case complexity of random 3-SAT, understood as a function of the order (number of variables) for fixed density (ratio of number of clauses to order) instances, depend on the density? Is there a phase transition in which the complexity shifts from polynomial to exponential in the order? Is the transition dependent or independent of the solver? Our experiment design uses three complete SAT solvers embodying different algorithms: GRASP, CPLEX, and CUDD. We observe new phase transitions for all three solvers, where the median running time shifts from polynomial in the order to exponential. The location of the phase transition appears to be solver-dependent. GRASP shifts from polynomial to exponential complexity near the density of 3.8, CPLEX shifts near density 3, while CUDD exhibits this transition between densities of 0.1 and 0.5. This experimental result underscores the dependence between the solver and the complexity phase transition, and challenges the widely held belief that random 3-SAT exhibits a phase transition in computational complexity very close to the crossover point. 相似文献

Isotactic poly(1-butene) (i-PBu) is a polyolefin of industrial relevance which exhibits an interesting polymorphism. Upon cooling from the relaxed melt at atmospheric pressure, a tetragonal phase (Form II) develops. However, being metastable, this structure slowly evolves upon aging in the stable trigonal modification (Form I). Another trigonal modification, denoted Form I′, can also crystallize directly from the melt if proper conditions are met, e.g., high pressure, low tacticity, ultrathin samples etc. In this work, we aim to verify whether, by acting on the nucleation stage via a proper thermal history, the direct formation of the trigonal polymorph from the melt in a bulk sample is possible. Nucleation of i-PBu has been tailored by means of the self-nucleation technique, imposed on previously aged samples (Form I). DSC and temperature-resolved WAXS show that different crystallization pathways can be observed, depending on the residual concentration of Form I self-nuclei. With decreasing self-nucleation temperature we first encounter “cross-nucleation” of the tetragonal crystal on trigonal nuclei, followed by concomitant crystallization of Form II and Form I′ and eventually the sole formation of the trigonal modification (Form I′). 相似文献

Flat mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) comprising polysulfone and clinoptilolite-type natural zeolite were prepared by casting. Zeolite was modified with three alkylamines: ethanolamine (EA), bis(2-hydroxypropyl)amine (BHPA), and polyethylenimine (PEI) by the impregnation method. Impregnated zeolite samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and N2 adsorption–desorption. The alkylamine loading extent determined by thermogravimetric analysis was 5.2, 4.8, and 8.5% for EA, BHPA, and PEI, respectively. Analyses of MMMs showed that the incorporation of impregnated zeolite affected the glass-transition temperature (Tg) and mixed-gas transport properties. In this regard, a decreasing trend of the Tg values from 185.5 °C for the polymeric membrane up to 176.6 °C for Clino-EA-based MMM was recorded. In addition, the gas separation performance was evaluated at two different feed pressures. At 50 psi, MMMs showed an enhancement up to 30% on the CO2 permeability (22.79 Barrer) and 55% on the CO2/CH4 selectivity (45.78) in comparison with the polymeric membrane (CO2 permeability 17.34 Barrer; CO2/CH4 selectivity 29.38). The modeling of the viscoelastic properties of semicrystalline polymeric matrix composites is discussed. Different mathematical models are applied to describe the development of the storage modulus, measured by dynamic mechanical analysis, as a function of the crystalline content during isothermal crystallization experiments. Best results are obtained with an empirical power law model developed in this work. The application of the Halpin-Tsai equation and of a theoretical model, based on a combination of parallel-series arrangements of viscoelastic elements representing the crystalline and amorphous phases, is also discussed. Samples of virgin olive oils (105) from seven Extremaduran olive varieties (Cacereña, Carrasqueña, Cornezuelo, Corniche, Morisca, Picual, and Verdial de Badajoz) in three stage of maturity (green, semi-ripe, and ripe) were collected and the alkane, alkene, and sesquiterpene contents determined. There were significant differences at the 0.01 probability level in most of the hydrocarbons, both by variety and by state of maturity. Discriminant analysis applied to 70 samples explained 72.3% of the variance between the different groups of varieties and allowed 90% of the samples to be classified according to their variety. The acceptability of the model was verified against the remaining 35 samples, giving a mean level of correct classification of 94%. 相似文献

The reduction of energy use in buildings is a major component of greenhouse gas mitigation policy and requires knowledge of the fabric and the occupant behaviour. Hence there has been a longstanding desire to use automatic means to identify these. Smart metres and the internet-of-things have the potential to do this. This paper describes a study where the ability of inverse modelling to identify building parameters is evaluated for 6 monitored real and 1000 simulated buildings. It was found that low-order models provide good estimates of heat transfer coefficients and internal temperatures if heating, electricity use and CO2 concentration are measured during the winter period. This implies that the method could be used with a small number of cheap sensors and enable the accurate assessment of buildings’ thermal properties, and therefore the impact of any suggested retrofit. The creative city approach is going through a redefinition after the 2008 global financial crisis. In the specific case of South-European cities, in the context of austerity and cuts in public investment, creativity is becoming a strategy for achieving maximum social benefit and improvement of the built environment with minimum economic expenditure. This paper looks at this redefinition of creativity through the case study of Seville, in southern Spain. Through research methods that include video-recorded testimonies of the actors involved, mapping at the online platform “Laboratorio Q”, and public engagement activities, this paper explores how the civic society, professional, and public authorities have reinvented how to produce collective spaces. The paper concludes that bottom-up creative processes for producing collective spaces have become more visible since the 2008 crisis, when architects, planners, public authorities and policy-makers have been “learning” from them. 相似文献

Fully bio-based and biodegradable active films based on poly(lactic acid) (PLA) blended with poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and incorporating lactic acid oligomers (OLA) as plasticizers and carvacrol as active agent were extruded and fully characterized in their functional properties for antimicrobial active packaging. PLA_PHB films showed good barrier to water vapor, while the resistance to oxygen diffusion decreased with the addition of OLA and carvacrol. Their overall migration in aqueous food simulant was determined and no significant changes were observed by the addition of carvacrol and OLA to the PLA_PHB formulations. However, the effect of both additives in fatty food simulant can be considered a positive feature for the potential protection of foodstuff with high fat content. Moreover, the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the proposed formulations increased by the presence of carvacrol, with enhanced activity against Staphylococcus aureus if compared to Escherichia coli at short and long incubation times. These results underlined the specific antimicrobial properties of these bio-films suggesting their applicability in active food packaging. 相似文献
