News frames can influence how people think about disease. In a pair of studies, we demonstrate how contemporary news outlets frame cancer and how exposure to common frames can affect news audiences' perceptions of those who suffer from cancer. First, we examine the current landscape of frame usage in online cancer news, employing frames ideally suited to the depiction of health and disease. We compare our results with previously published research in this news domain. Second, we employ these frames in a multimessage experiment to assess the influence of cancer news framing on individuals' perceptions about cancer, cancer interventions, and those with cancer. We conclude with a discussion of implications for framing research and health news production.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effectiveness of packaging using a microencapsulated β‐cyclodextrin and trans‐cinnamaldehyde complex incorporated into a base chitosan matrix on the shelf life of fresh‐cut melon (Cucumis melo L. var. Reticulatus Naud) group Inodorus that were coated with a multilayered coating system using a polypropylene tray (Ziploc®) with (i) Ziploc® lid, (ii) Saran® wrap and (iii) plain cheesecloth and stored at 4 °C for 15 days. The multilayered antimicrobial coating improved the shelf life of fresh‐cut melon (up to 15 days), compared with the controls (7 days). Coated samples were firmer, maintained colour and total carotenoids content and showed less weight loss than the controls (P < 0.05). Among the packaging treatments, the Ziploc® lid was the most effective in maintaining shelf life. This study demonstrates the application of a new generation of edible coating using natural antimicrobial agents by means of the layer‐by‐layer assembly.  相似文献

Failure analysis plays a major role in all areas of the semiconductor company especially during product development cycle, 1st silicon stage, or in wafer processes and fabrication as well as assembly and package development. Different companies have different FA flows but all FA steps will need to start with fault isolation. Fault isolation is the step to narrow down the focus area of a failing component or product to a manageable area that will allow us to (a) improve success of finding the defect that is causing the failure and, (b) significant speed up turn-around time for analysis.This paper provides an overview of all the available failure analysis on fault isolation methodologies and tools, for device/product level and expanding to package/assembly and PFA level isolation. The aim of the paper is to provide sufficient depth to each topic including some case studies to emphasize the key points related to each methodology. Chlorination continues to be widely used by the fresh-cut industry for washing and disinfecting minimally processed fruits and vegetables. However, as chlorination has been reported to produce unhealthy by-products such as, chloramines and trihalomethanes, many alternative methods have been reported in the literature. This study examined the use of silver and hydrogen peroxide as possible alternative to chlorination. The results revealed an obvious bactericidal effect of hydrogen peroxide, silver and their combination on spoilage organisms. Combination of electrochemically generated silver (5 ppm) and hydrogen peroxide (0.4 ppm) caused significant (P < 0.05) reduction in the total plate count (0.87 log), Pseudomonas (2.66 logs), Enterobactericeae (1.61 logs) and yeast and mould (1.60 logs) immediately after washing in comparison to water washed shredded lettuce. However, washing with chlorinated water (5 ppm) under same conditions revealed insignificant reduction in TPC (0.17 log), Pseudomonas (0.60 log), Enterobactericeae (0.15 log) or yeast and mould (0.81 log) counts. Results revealed also that both sources of silver (electrochemical silver and silver nitrate) have similar disinfecting effects, however, electrochemical silver maintained the quality of washed lettuce.  相似文献

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is generally considered to be a primary disease of cardiac muscle, although several clinical observations suggest that the pathologic process might be more diffuse. To further examine this possibility, electromyography and voluntary muscle biopsies were done on 11 patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. In 10 of 10 patients electromyography showed reductions in mean potential amplitude and duration, with an increased incidence of short-duration polyphasic deflections (findings traditionally accepted as indicative of a myopathic process). Light and electron microscopic studies of the biopsy material showed abnormalities in eight of 11 patients: four had central core or target fibers, or both, and two of these, plus four others, had subsarcolemmal mitochondrial proliferation with or without abnormal ultrastructure. These findings indicate that hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is only one aspect of a larger disease spectrum, with abnormalities in both voluntary and cardiac muscle.  相似文献

Abstract

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is one of the most prevalent micronutrient deficiencies that disproportionately affects low income populations in developing countries. Traditional breeding and modern biotechnology have significant potential to enhance micronutrient bioavailability in crops through biofortification. Bananas (Musa spp.) are economically important fruit crops grown throughout tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world where VAD is most prevalent. Some banana genotypes are rich in provitamin A carotenoids (pVACs), providing an opportunity to use bananas as a readily available vehicle for provitamin A delivery. This review summarizes the progress made in carotenoid research in bananas relative to banana diversity and the use of conventional breeding and transgenic approaches aimed at banana biofortification to address vitamin A deficiency. Existing reports on sampling strategies, pVAC retention and bioavailability are also evaluated as essential components for a successful banana biofortification effort. The wide variability of pVACs reported in banana cultivars coupled with recent advances in unraveling the diversity and genetic improvement of this globally important but often-neglected staple fruit crop underscores their importance in biofortification schemes.  相似文献

We report fusion proteins designed to bind spatially distinct epitopes on the extracellular portion of HER2, a breast cancer biomarker and established therapeutic target, and recruit IgG (either anti-His6 or serum IgG) to the cell surface. When the proteins were incubated with anti-His6 antibody and various concentrations of a single HER2-binding protein His6 fusion, we observed interference and a decrease in antibody recruitment at HER2-binding protein concentrations exceeding ∼30 nM. In contrast, concomitant treatment with two or three distinct HER2-binding protein His6 fusions, and anti-His6, results in increased antibody recruitment, even at relatively high HER2-binding protein concentration. In some instances, increased antibody recruitment leads to increased antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) activity. While a fusion protein consisting of a HER2-binding nanobody and Sac7d, a protein evolved to recognize the Fc domain of IgG, binds IgG from serum, antibody recruitment does not lead to ADCC activity. Rationales for these disparities are provided. Collectively, our findings have implications for the design of efficacious targeted immunotherapeutic biologics, and ensembles thereof.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Domino circuit topology for high-speed operation, robustness and lower power consumption is quintessential in design of digital systems. In this paper, various high speed and robust mechanisms are proposed to enhance the speed of Clock-Delayed Dual Keeper Domino (CDDK) circuit. Delayed enabling of keeper circuit in CDDK domino circuit reduces contention between keeper circuit and Pull-Down network (PDN). The speed of transition at the dynamic node of the CDDK domino circuit is enhanced through imposing techniques namely (i) controlled clock delay time in enabling the keeper transistor, (ii) keeper control signal voltage swing variation, (iii) sizing of keeper transistors and (iv) deploying an additional conditional discharge path. The robustness of CDDK circuit is increased by upsizing the keeper transistor without degrading the speed by stack arrangement of dual keeper transistors. The simulation of enhancement techniques has been performed using Cadence® Virtuoso ADEL and ADEXL environments employing UMC 90nm technology library. The simulation results of wide fan-in 64-input OR gate demonstrate that CDDK technique with additional discharge path offer 38% increase in speed and CDDK technique with keeper transistor upsizing offers 52% increase in noise gain margin without speed degradation while comparing with the conventional domino logic circuit.  相似文献

We report for the first time a study on non-contact thermal poling of soda lime silicate glasses using DC gas discharge. In this work, the formation of a glow discharge is evidenced during the thermal poling treatment (longer than 30 minutes). The hardness and the chemical durability of glasses poled under different conditions (contact or non-contact) and atmospheres (nitrogen or air) are measured and compared to that of un-poled reference glass. The results reveal enhanced mechanical and chemical properties for samples poled under nitrogen as compare to air poled or soda lime silicate glass samples. A structural and chemical analysis of surface of the glass using IR-reflectance measurement and ToF-SIMS is also presented. The formation of a “silica-like” layer on the surface of nitrogen poled glasses is observed, which is likely associated with the enhancement of surface properties. On the other hand, the introduction of protons beneath the surface of glasses poled under air leads to the formation of a hydrated alkaline earth silica layer. Based on the observations a mechanism behind the sustainability of the plasma under DC conditions is proposed.  相似文献
