Nanocrystalline tungsten has the potential to have superior strength and hardness properties versus conventional tungsten. While tungsten nanopowders are becoming more commonly available, processing through conventional press and sinter techniques induce unacceptable grain growth. As an alternative, electric-current-assisted sintering (commercially known as SPS or PPC) allows extremely high heating rates (>1,000°C/min.) to be achieved which accelerates the consolidation process and preserves the nanocrystalline structure of the material. The high heating rates can, however, lead to non-uniform density and compromised properties. This work employs numerical simulations of the process as a means to understand and reduce these gradients and optimize the process.  相似文献

The convergence of optical and wireless technologies may offer a compelling network access infrastructure because these technologies combine major benefits such as large coverage in the wireless part and huge bandwidth in the optical part of the converged access network. The convergence of the passive optical networks with 4G wireless standards, such as the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access and the Long Term Evolution, constitutes a quite attractive solution to meet the challenges of the modern bandwidth‐hungry access networks. One of the most important objective a modern access network has to address is the adequate bandwidth distribution to the final users. In addition, several other aims are emerged towards this goal, such as fairness and quality of service provisioning. The adversity of designing an efficient bandwidth distribution scheme for hybrid optical‐wireless access networks lies in the interdependence of both domains: the bandwidth distribution in the wireless domain depends on the optical transmission grant opportunities, while the bandwidth coordinator in the optical part has to be aware of the mobile user heterogeneity in the wireless domain. Moreover, the bandwidth decision‐making module in both networks has to be aware of providing a fair allocation independently of the number of mobile users or the traffic requests in the network. In this work, we endeavor to address the aforementioned challenges. A novel, fair, and efficient bandwidth distribution scheme is proposed for hybrid optical‐wireless access networks. By using weighted fairness provisioning techniques, the proposed scheme intends to alleviate the interdependence of the two domains, offering a fair and efficient bandwidth distribution to the mobile users. The weights are properly defined, by utilizing suitable optimization techniques such as the Lagrange multiplies, so as to incorporate the underlying features of each traffic requests, such as the population density and the propagation delay. Extensive simulation results indicate the capability of the proposed scheme, compared with other competitive allocation schemes, in provisioning a more efficient and fair bandwidth distribution in terms of latency, throughput, and packet drop ratio. In this paper, we present a novel scheme for the multicast transmission of data over Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks. Apart from the normal multicast transmission over UMTS, we consider the handling of exceptional cases caused by user mobility scenarios. The proposed scheme is in accordance with the current specifications of the Multimedia Multicast/Broadcast Service (MBMS) defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and introduces minor modifications in the UMTS architecture and the mobility management mechanisms. The proposed scheme is implemented as an ns-2 network simulator module. The performance of the proposed scheme is validated and analyzed through ns-2 simulation experiments. This new module can be employed to investigate various aspects of UMTS multicast. Furthermore, in order to further highlight the contribution of our mechanism, we have implemented two multicast congestion control mechanisms for UMTS and we have measured their performance for MBMS transmissions.  相似文献

We present the exocytosis profile of two types of peptide-coated nanoparticles, which have similar charge and size but different functionality. While one kind of particles appears to progressively exocytose, the other one has a more complex profile, suggesting that some of the particles are re-uptaken by the cells. Both types of particles retain their colloidal stability after exocytosis.  相似文献

Herb-induced liver injury (HILI) has recently attracted attention due to increasing reports of hepatotoxicity associated with use of phytotherapeutics. Here, we present data on HILI from the Berlin Case-Control Surveillance Study. The study was initiated in 2000 to investigate the serious toxicity of drugs including herbal medicines. Potential cases of liver injury were ascertained in more than 180 Departments of all 51 Berlin hospitals from October 2002 to December 2011. Drug or herb intake was assessed through a standardized face-to-face interview. Drug or herbal aetiology was assessed based on the updated Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences scale. In ten of all 198 cases of hepatotoxicity included in the study, herbal aetiology was assessed as probable (once ayurvedic herb) or possible (Valeriana five times, Mentha piperita once, Pelargonium sidoides once, Hypericum perforatum once, Eucalyptus globulus once). Mean age was 56.4 ± 9.7 years, and the predominant pattern of liver injury was hepatocellular. No cases of acute liver failure or death were observed. This case series corroborates known risks for ayurvedic herbs, supports the suspected association between Valeriana use and liver injury, and indicates a hepatotoxic potential for herbs such as Pelargonium sidoides, Hypericum perforatum or Mentha piperita that were rarely associated with liver injury before. However, given that possible causality does not prove clinical significance, further studies in this field are needed.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Olive mill wastewaters (OMWs) are an important residue and several methods have been proposed for their treatment. RESULTS: Remarkable decolorization (~63%) and phenol removal (~34% w/w) from OMW was achieved. In glucose‐based flask sterile cultures, enrichment with OMWs increased ethanol and biomass production compared with cultures without OMWs added. Flask sterile and un‐sterilized cultures demonstrated similar kinetic results. Batch‐bioreactor trials performed showed higher ethanol and lower biomass quantities compared with the respective shake‐flask experiments, while cultures used under un‐sterilized conditions revealed equivalent results to the sterile ones. In non‐sterile bioreactor cultures, OMWs addition enhanced biomass production in comparison with culture with no OMWs added, whereas ethanol biosynthesis was not affected. The maximum ethanol quantity achieved was 52 g L?1 (conversion yield per sugar consumed of 0.46 g g?1) in a batch bioreactor non‐sterilized trial with OMW–glucose enriched medium used as substrate, that presented initial reducing sugars concentration at ~115 g L?1. Fatty acid analysis of cellular lipids demonstrated that in OMW‐based media, cellular lipids containing increased concentrations of oleic and linoleic acid were produced in comparison with cultures with no OMWs added. CONCLUSIONS: S. cerevisiae simultaneously produced bio‐ethanol and biomass and detoxified OMWs, under non‐sterile conditions. © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The driver for this study is the observation that heating of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with electromagnetic field can offer a more efficient and cost‐effective alternative in heat transfer for the production of composites. The idea of this study is twofold; CNT can work as microwave (MW) radiation susceptors and they can act as nanoreinforcements in the final system. To test these assumptions, a household oven was modified to control the curing schedule. Polymers with different CNT concentrations were prepared (0.5 and 1.0 wt %). The dispersion of the CNTs in the epoxy was achieved using shear‐mixing dissolver technique. MW and conventionally cured specimens were also produced in a convection oven for reference. Thermal and mechanical tests were used as control point. A curing schedule investigation was further performed to quantify the energy and time‐saving capabilities using CNT and MWs. The presence of CNTs into epoxy matrix has been proven beneficial for the shortening of the curing time. MW‐cured composites showed the same degree of polymerization with the conventionally cured composites in a shorter time period and this time was reduced as the CNT concentration was increased. A good distribution of the CNT is required to avoid hot spot effects and local degradation. Mechanical performance was, in some cases, favored by the use of CNT. The benefit from the use of MWs and CNT could reach at least 40% in terms of energy needed and time without sacrificing mechanical performance. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym.
