Comment on “Topical Delivery of Avastin to the Posterior Segment of the Eye In Vivo Using Annexin A5‐Associated Liposomes”: Topical Liposomal Bevacizumab Results in Negligible Retinal Concentrations

The previously published report suggests that liposomes, functionalized with annexin‐5, can deliver bevacizumab to the retina after topical administration as eyedrops. Topical delivery of bevacizumab would be an attractive alternative to the current treatment that involves monthly intravitreal injections to the eye. In this Comment, the retinal concentrations of topically applied liposomal bevacizumab are compared to the levels reached after intravitreal injections. The comparison reveals that the topical liposomal delivery results in retinal bevacizumab concentrations that are about 3–5 orders of magnitude below the lowest bevacizumab concentrations during clinical treatment with intravitreal injections. Major improvement is needed before topical bevacizumab delivery can be considered clinically feasible.     

Effects of barium on stimulus-induced rises in [K+]o in juvenile rat hippocampal area CA1

Immature glia may not be able to buffer K+ ions released during neuronal activity. Therefore, we investigated entorhinal-hippocampal slices of juvenile rats (ages P15-18 and P22-26) using a perfusion medium containing 2 mM BaCl2 in order to block glial inward rectifying and leak potassium channels. In contrast to adult animals, rises in [K+]o in slices from juvenile animals elicited by repetitive alvear stimulation were not augmented by Ba2+. Ba2+ effects on fast field potentials, slow field potentials and the applied current sink source distribution were roughly similar as in adult rats. We conclude that the capacity to buffer large quantities of K+ ions by mechanisms involving Ba2+-sensitive K+ channels has not yet developed in juveniles.     

A Large 16*16 IF Analog Switch Matrix for Personal Communications Satellites

A 16 input and 16 output channels single chip intermediate frequency range (160 MHz) analog switch matrix for personal communication satellites has been designed and processed by using a commercial 1.2 µm BiCMOS technology. The circuit has low power consumption (,2W) and low insertion loss with maximum output power of 0 dBm.     

Determination of the Henry's Coefficient and Mass Transfer for Ozone in a Bubble Column at Different pH Values of Water

In this study, the ozone gas-liquid mass transfer into water in a bubble column was investigated for different pH values. The ozone volumetric mass transfer coefficient and the Henry's coefficient were determined simultaneously by parameter estimation using a nonlinear optimization method. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to obtain information on the reliability and identifiability of the estimated parameters. A minor dependence of the Henry's law constant on pH was detected at the pH range 4 to 9.     

MOTHER: System for continuous capturing of display stream

This paper describes an efficient technique to record display output stream with memory resident software. This kind of recording can be made useful for studying text writing processes experimentally, for example programmers behaviour during coding. The system is inconspicuous in test situation and does not seem to affect the testees working. Separate software has been developed for reviewing captured sessions.     

Design of a Microprocessor Control System for a Solid-Fuel Water Boiler

A design of an industrial microcomputer control system for a 1.6-MW boiler using solid fuel is presented. Instrumentation and control philosophies for the boiler are discussed. The microcomputer system is based on standard iSBC microcomputer boards. The software consists of a real-time operating system RXM/80 and application tasks. The designed control system saves fuel and gives a more reliable over-all operation.     

Evaluation of the hot-carrier-induced offset voltage of differential pairs in analogue CMOS circuits

Using a specifically developed measurement set-up and a test structure typical for analogue applications, high precision measurements of the stress-induced offset voltage degradation of differential pairs are presented. Extrapolation to operating conditions yields valuable information for analogue design in the sub-micron CMOS regime.     

Diabetes insipidus and panhypopituitarism in an 8-year-old girl due to probable lymphocytic hypophysitis

A 43-year-old white man with a history of cigarette smoking, hypertension, nephrolithiasis, and cervical degenerative arthritis was hospitalized for sudden-onset severe, substernal, and pleuritic chest pain with epigastric radiation. Despite evaluation, the cause remained unclear and the patient expired on hospital day 5. Autopsy revealed acute Stanford type A aortic dissection, hemopericardium, and hemothorax. Grossly, the aorta and its branches, including uninvolved medium-sized arteries, displayed extreme mural fragility. Microscopic examination showed a primary lymphoplasmacytic aortitis-periaortitis without giant cells. Rents within the tunica media, medial-adventitial inflammation, and elastic fiber disruption were limited to sites of gross aortic dissection. Muscular arteries showed patchy, chronic arteritis-periarteritis without giant cell infiltrate or aneurysm formation. This case documents an unusual association of primary lymphoplasmacytic aortitis and aortic dissection.
