A method for characterizing the subsurface is developed using an artificial neural network (ANN) and geographic information system (GIS). Data on the distribution of aquifer materials from monitoring well lithologic logs are used to train a multilayer perceptron using the back-propagation algorithm. The trained ANN predicts using an appropriate prediction scale, the subsurface formation materials at each point on a discretized grid of the model area. GIS is then used to develop subsurface profiles from the data generated using the ANN. These subsurface profiles are then compared with available geological sections to check the accuracy of the ANN-GIS generated profiles. This methodology is applied to determine the aquifer extent and calculate aquifer parameters for input to ground-water models for the multiaquifer system underlying the city of Bangkok, Thailand. A selected portion of the model domain is used for illustration. The integrated approach of ANN and GIS is shown to be a powerful tool for characterizing complex aquifer geometry, and for calculating aquifer parameters for ground-water flow modeling. 相似文献

Dissociation of water molecule occurs on octahedrally coordinated unsaturated suface cations and oxygen vacancies created by lithium substitution in magnesium ferrite. Lower synthesis temperature of ferrite has generated nanopores in microstructure. Dissociated hydronium and hydroxyl ions are transported through surface and capillary diffusion in porous ferrite network towards attached Zn and Ag electrodes. Water molecule dissociation ability of nanoporous ferrite has been exploited to develop a green electrical energy cell, which is a combination of material science and electrode chemistry. The innovated cell has been nomenclatured as hydroelectric cell (HEC). When HEC is partially dipped in deionized water, spontaneously hydroxide and hydronium ions are produced by water molecule dissociation. Hydronium ions trapped in nanopores develop enough electric field that further dissociates physisorbed water molecules. Thereby, the process of water molecule dissociation is accelerated in a bigger way to increase ionic current in the cell. Oxidation of Zn electrode by hydroxide ion and reduction of H3O+ at Ag electrode develop voltage and electric current in the cell. The HEC cell of a 17 cm2 area is able to generate a short circuit current of 82 mA and 920 mV emf with a maximum output power of 74 mW, which is three order higher than reported output power 1.4 μW/cm2 produced by water in cement matrix. Hydroelectric cell performance is repetitive, stable and possesses potential to replace traditional ways of generating renewable energy in terms of cost and safety. Phytochemicals content and antimicrobial activity of Artocarpus heterophyllus, Cyclosorus extensa, Oldendia corymbosa, and Alpinia malaccensis were investigated. Maximum alkaloids and terpenoids were found in A. heterophyllus; tannins and saponins in C. extensa; flavonoids, polyphenols, and phytosterols in O. corymbosa and anthraquinone, glycosides, and anthocyaninin A. malaccensis. Aqueous, methanolic, ethyl acetate, and hexane extracts were prepared from all the leaves. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometric (ATR-FTIR) analysis revealed that alkanes and alkyl halides were prevalent in all the extracts and the ethyl acetate extracts contained comparatively higher number of functional groups, which were also more effective against Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus. The minimum inhibitory concentration values of A. malaccensis against the tested pathogens were found to be lesser than the other species. 相似文献

The shielding properties for gamma rays of a few low Z materials were investigated. The values of the mass attenuation coefficient, equivalent atomic number, effective atomic number, exposure buildup factor and energy absorption buildup factor were calculated and used to estimate the shielding effectiveness of the samples under investigation. It has been observed that the shielding effectiveness of a sample is directly related to its effective atomic number. The shielding character of any sample is a function of the incident photon energy. Good shielding behaviour has been verified in soil samples in the photon energy region of 0.015-0.30 MeV and of dolomite in 3-15 MeV. We describe a complete noise analysis and application of a custom made AFM force spectroscopy setup on pulling a recombinant protein with an NRR domain of mouse Notch 1. Our table top AFM setup is affordable, has an open architecture, and is easily transferable to other laboratories. Its calculated noise characteristics are dominated by the Brownian noise with 2% non-Brownian components integrated over the first thermally induced resonance of a typical cantilever. For a typical SiN cantilever with a force constant of ~15 pN nm(-1) and in water the force sensitivity and resolution are less than 10 pN, and the corresponding deflection sensitivities are less than 100 pm Hz(-1/2). Also, we obtain a sub-ms time resolution in detecting the protein length change, and only few ms cantilever response times as measured in the force clamp mode on a well-known protein standard. Using this setup we investigate force-induced conformational transitions in the NRR region of a mouse Notch 1. Notch is an important protein related to leukemia and breast cancers in humans. We demonstrate that it is feasible to develop AFM-based studies of the force-induced conformational transitions in Notch. Our results match recent steered molecular dynamics simulations of the NRR unfolding and constitute a first step towards a detailed study of Notch activation with AFM. 相似文献

Enterohemorrhagic E. coil (EHEC) serotype O157:H7 is one of the major pathogens, responsible for the severe disease outbreaks. EHEC causes diseases in humans through production of shiga-like toxin leading to bloody diarrhea. The toxin is encoded by stx2 gene in E. coli. The current methodology for detection of EHEC relies on fluorogenic-substrate based culture media or nucleic acid amplification based Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction assays that are either time consuming or need expensive instrumentation. In this study, the optical properties of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) have been exploited for detection of nucleic acid of Escherichia coli O157:H7. The stx2 gene representing EHEC signature has been targeted using the gold nanoparticle probes. Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) of 20 +/- 0.2 nm were synthesised by citrate reduction method and characterised by spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The GNPs were functionalised with 19 and 22 bp of thiolated single stranded DNA complementary to target highly conserved 149 bp region of stx2 gene. Transmission Electron Microscopy revealed the hybridization, aggregation and reduction in the interparticle distances of the GNP probes in the presence of target DNA. The aggregation and the spectral shift in the plasmon band observed with 10(6) copies of target DNA indicates feasibility of a simple and quick colorimetric 'spot and read' test in contrast to amplification based detection methods. 相似文献

We report the effect of Gd inclusion in the NbN superconductor thin films. The films are deposited on single crystalline Silicon (100) by DC reactive sputtering technique, i.e., deposition of Nb and Gd in presence of reactive N2 gas. The fabricated relatively thick films (400 nm) are crystallized in cubic structure. These films are characterized for their morphology, elemental analysis, and roughness by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) respectively. The optimized film (maximum T c ) is achieved with gas ratio of Ar:N2 (80:20) for both pristine and Gd-doped films. The optimized NbN film possesses T c (R=0) in zero and 140 kOe fields are at 14.8 K and 8.8 K, respectively. The Gd-doped NbN film showed T c (R=0) in zero and 130 kOe fields at 11.2 K and 6.8 K, respectively. The upper critical field H c2(0) of the studied superconducting films is calculated from the magneto-transport [R(T)H] measurements using GL equations. It is found that Gd doping deteriorated the superconducting performance of NbN. 相似文献

ABSTRACT A numerical method for multiphase incompressible thermal flows with solid–liquid and liquid–vapor phase transformations is presented. The flow is mainly driven by thermocapillary force and vaporization. Based on the level set method and mixture continuum model, a set of governing equations valid for solid, liquid, and vapor phases is derived, considering phase boundary conditions as source terms in the transport equations. The vaporization process is treated as a source term in the continuity equation. The model developed is applied to the laser welding process, where the flow is coupled with optical phenomena.
