Measurements show that silo wall pressures exhibit large fluctuations in time and space during discharge of the silo. This observation is important for the design of the silo wall because spatial pressure variations may impose substantial bending moments in the silo wall that otherwise may be small or vanishing due to the carrying ability of the membrane forces in the silo wall. Information about the stochastic properties of this pressure variation cannot be obtained from any existing continuum model for the silo medium flowing within the confinement of the silo. Therefore the modeling must presently be tied to statistical analyses of the empirical evidence combined with simple mechanical principles. This paper analyzes the same data set as that analyzed by Munch-Andersen et al., but on the basis of a completely different and physically less disputable stochastic pressure field model than the one considered by them. It is shown that an explicitly constructed gamma distribution type of field in equilibrium with itself fits well to the measurements made in the Swedish Karpalund silo.  相似文献

MS2 bacteriophages removal from surface water, characterized by high natural organic matter (NOM) content, was investigated by inline coagulation/flocculation pretreatment followed by ceramic microfiltration (MF). MS2 and DOC removal increased with lower pH and higher coagulant dose. Lowering the coagulant pH from 6.5 to 5.5 for polyaluminum chloride (PACl), and to 5.0 for iron chloride (FeCl), respectively, along with doubling of the coagulant dose from 2 to 4 mg Al/L, and from 4 to 8 mg Fe/L, respectively, maximized the virus removal, resulting in more than six log unit reductions up to complete virus retention. However, high residual metal concentrations were found under such conditions. Comparison of conventional two‐stage coagulation pretreatment with simple inline coagulation did not show any significant performance differences. Both investigated coagulants showed virus inactivation about two log units after 60 min contact time, which is equivalent to a virus inactivation of 99%. This inactivation was only reversible to a small extend by chemical or physical floc destruction. This paper presents a computationally efficient method for using the dynamic wake meandering model to conduct simulations of wind farm power production. The method is based on creating a database, which contains the time and rotor‐averaged wake effect at any point downstream of a wake‐emitting turbine operating in arbitrary ambient conditions and at an arbitrary degree of wake influence. This database is later used as a look‐up table at runtime to estimate the operating conditions at all turbines in the wind farm, thus eliminating the need to run the dynamic wake meandering model at runtime. By using the proposed method, the time required to conduct wind farm simulations is reduced by three orders of magnitude compared with running the standalone dynamic wake meandering model at runtime. As a result, the wind farm production dynamics for a farm of 100 turbines at 10,000 different sets of ambient conditions run on a normal laptop in 1 h. Environmental and health considerations have encouraged the development of ammunition with substitutes for lead and other heavy metals. In general, the emission products from munitions containing nitro‐based propellants are highly complex mixtures of gases, vapors, and solid particles. The major combustion products are H2O, CO, CO2, H2, and N2. In addition, compounds including hydrogen cyanide (HCN), ammonia (NH3), methane (CH4), nitrogen oxides, benzene, acrylonitrile, toluene, furan, aromatic amines, benzopyrene, and various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are detected in minor concentrations. Many of the identified chemical species have severe toxicological properties, and some of the compounds do even have mutagenic effects. Gun smoke emission is a concern because its exposure to humans may be substantial during military and civilian police training, as respiratory protection equipment is not routinely worn. In this work we study the compositions of some of the main decomposition products, experimentally as well as theoretically. The concept of frozen equilibrium at around 1500–2000 K appears to apply for CO, CO2, and H2. However, the trace species in the combustion mixtures appear theoretically to be present in negligible concentrations. Our measured results are many orders of magnitude higher than theoretical results in open space. We forecast that future development of gun powder will focus on reducing the amount of toxic trace species.  相似文献

This study investigated the relationship between premorbid and current cognitive function with respect to the clinical features of patients with various types of neurodegeneration in the form of Alzheimer's disease (AD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and subjective cognitive impairment (SCI), as compared with a healthy control group (C). Clinical features (MMSE, cognitive and depressive symptoms), genetics (apolipoprotein E; APOE) and measures of neurodegeneration (Aβ42, t-tau, and p-tau) were examined, as well as present cognitive function. Various methods of assessing premorbid cognitive function were compared, including a Swedish NART-analogous test (Irregularly Spelled Words; ISW), a Swedish lexical decision test (SLDT), a Hold test (Information in WAIS-R), Best current performance test, and combined demographic characteristics. Results showed that cognitive decline (premorbid minus current cognitive function) based on SLDT and ISW was a significant predictor for MMSE and Aβ42, whereas corresponding associations for present cognitive function and decline measures based on other methods were less powerful. Results also showed that specific verbal abilities (e.g., SLDT and ISW) were insensitive to AD and that these abilities indicated premorbid cognitive function in retrospect. Initiated in 1992, the DECOVALEX project is an international collaboration for advancing the understanding and modeling of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) processes in geologic systems. The project has made important scientific achievements through three stages and is progressing in its fourth stage. It has played a key role in the development of mathematical modeling and in situ testing of coupled THM processes in fractured rock and buffer/backfill materials, a subject of importance for performance assessment of radioactive waste geologic repositories. This paper summarizes studies under the most recent stage of the project, DECOVALEX III (2000–2003). These studies include those of two major field experiments: (a) the FEBEX experiment at Grimsel, Switzerland, investigating coupled THM processes in a crystalline rock-bentonite system, and (b) the Drift Scale Test (DST) experiment at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, investigating coupled THM processes in unsaturated tuff. These are two of the largest multiyear heater tests undertaken to date for the study of coupled THM processes in geological systems. In addition, three so-called benchmark tests are also studied to evaluate the impact of coupled THM processes under different scenarios and geometries. Within the DECOVALEX project, multiple research teams participated in each of the studies, using different approaches and computer codes. Comparisons of results have provided insight into coupled THM processes, which in turn has stimulated further development of our modeling capabilities. Lessons learned from these studies are discussed. The scientific advances and enhanced insight gained through this kind of international cooperation illustrate the effectiveness of the DECOVALEX project.  相似文献

The influence of molecular collisions on the production of the degenerate four-wave mixing signal in I(2) is presented. Measurements were performed on gaseous molecular iodine, I(2), contained in a glass cell in which pressure, temperature, and species concentration are easily and independently varied. Frequencydoubled outputs from a seeded Nd:YAG laser and an excimer-pumped dye laser were used as excitation sources. We have studied the dependence of signal strength versus buffer gas pressure, with pump intensity as a third parameter. It is evident from our results that, for pump intensities of less than 1 MW/cm(2), the pressure dependence of the signal follows that given by a simple two-level model in the homogeneously broadened regime. In this regime collisional deexcitation becomes significant, leading to changes in saturation intensity. This is evidenced by a reduction in the signal with an increase in buffer gas pressure. This behavior is similar to that seen in laser-induced fluorescence. At higher pump intensities, the signal is seen to increase with pressure; this behavior cannot be described by the simple two-level model.  相似文献

This paper presents a method developed for the performance evaluation of an engineering system during a strong earthquake. The seismic reliability of the system is evaluated by considering the different possible failure modes, and seismic reliability of the components of the system. The method is applied to the oil production system at the Statfjord Field in the North Sea. The objective of the analysis is to document the reliability of oil production from the field in the event of an exceptionally large earthquake, and to investigate the effect of spatial variation of earthquake loading parameters on the computed system reliability. It is shown that, with a realistic model of the spatial variation of earthquake motion, there is very little correlation between the earthquake loading parameters at different platform locations. The main consequence of this lack of correlation is that the computed failure probability of the oil production system under the design earthquake is about one order of magnitude smaller than the probability of failure of individual platforms at the Statfjord Field.  相似文献
