A mass transport theory for interphase precipitation with application to vanadium steels

A mass transport theory is developed for interphase precipitation reactions in binary and pseudobinary systems where constant concentrations of solute are maintained at the interphase boundary. The theory presents exact solutions to the problem of diffusion-controlled growth involving the coupled motion of two boundaries. It is generally applicable to interphase pre-cipitation in both solid-solid and solid-liquid systems. Aspects of the theory are discussed with reference to the interphase precipitation reaction in model iron-carbon-vanadium alloys.     

Lymphocyte subclasses and depression.

This study enumerated lymphocyte subclasses in the peripheral circulation of 15 patients with current diagnoses of major depressive disorder using monoclonal antibodies and flow cytometry. Depressed patients were found to have smaller numbers of helper (T4+), suppressor (T8+), and total T cells (T11+) relative to individually matched, normal controls, but no differences occurred between groups in the ratio of helper to suppressor cells. Furthermore, the helper, suppressor, and total T cell counts were found to be inversely related to patients' self-reported depression scores. The peripheral circulation of patients with major depression seems to be characterized by proportionately equal reductions in the numbers of helper and suppressor T cells, with the magnitude of these reductions being related to the severity of clinical depression among such patients. Background subtraction algorithms for videodensitometric quantification of coronary stenosis

The determination of percent stenosis of coronary arteries is an important task in medicine. In this paper we discuss three different algorithms which can be used in conjunction with videodensitometry to measure this quantity. These algorithms may be used in subtracting the background under a vessel segment thus eliminating the need for a preinjection mask. The Thermal Decomposition of some Dialkyl Dicarbanilates

The thermal decomposition at 300 C of five dicarbanilates derived from 4,4 '— diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) was studied in an attempt to elucidate the low-temperature decomposition mechanism of rigid MDI-based polyurethane foams. The dicarbanilates of primary and secondary alcohols decomposed via normal fission of the urethane linkages, whereas those of tertiary alcohols yielded 4,4′—diphenylmethane diamine (MDA), carbon dioxide and the appropriate olefin via abnormal fission of the carbanilates.     

Ultrastructure of the spermatozoa and spermiogenesis in New Zealand freshwater eels (Anguillidae)

The spermiogenesis and sperm ultrastructure of Anguilla australis schmidtii and A. dieffenbachii is described. During spermiogenesis the chromatin material condenses into the crescent-shaped head of the mature sperm. By elongation of the sperm head the mitochondrion is displaced to the anterior of the head remote from the posterior centriolar apparatus. A ciliary rootlet becomes segregated during spermiogenesis to form a membrane covered, striated, rod-like appendage. From the proximal centriole arise two sets of filaments, each containing three subfibrils. One group of five filaments extends anteriorly along the inner concave side of the head. A group of four modified filaments pass along the outer, convex, side. The middle subfibril B of each triplet in the group of four filaments is flattened and joins the two subfibrils A and B, forming a binocular shaped structure. The motile flagellum has a 9+0 axonemal pattern.     

What pathological dimensions lie beyond the normal dimensions of the 16 PF? A comparison of MMPI and 16 PF factor domains.

A set of mutually exclusive, exhaustive parcels of MMPI items and the 16 personality factor scales from the Cattell 16 PF were factored together on 217 normal and 40 abnormal adult Air Force men. The analysis of the resulting 64 variables (45 MMPI parcels and 19 16 PF scales) yielded 21 factors, of which 13 are clearly identifiable as factors in the 16 PF and 4 are clearly MMPI factors. MMPI data were scored also for the traditional 14 clinical scales, and their predictability from 16 PF source trials examined in terms of the squared multiple correlations. The 7-factor space typically represented by the MMPI clinical scales was found to lie within the dimensionality of the Cattell 16 PF. The total prediction of the set of MMPI clinical scales from a single form (A) of the 16 PF, uncorrected for attenuation, is represented by the canonical correlation of .8. (47 ref.) Multiple comparison methods.

Takes exception to L. F. Petrinovich and C. D. Hardyck's (see record 1969-07531-001) conclusion that the Scheffé test is the most generally suitable multiple comparison method and suggests that the t-test and the Tukey tests are most desirable. Are hypertensives less assertive? A controlled evaluation.

Assessed the performance of 12 male hypertensives (mean age 47.36 yrs) in increasingly demanding interpersonal interactions. 12 extended role-played scenes incorporating the expression of positive and negative emotional states were used. Behavioral, physiological, and subjective ratings were obtained. Performance of the hypertensives was compared to that of both patient and nonpatient normotensive Ss who were carefully matched with the hypertensives on a number of demographic variables. Results indicate that the hypertensives responded less assertively on a number of dimensions than did the nonpatient comparison group. However, the performance of the normotensive patient group was similar to that of the hypertensive patients. Physiological and subjective data indicated comparable responding across all 3 experimental groups. Preemployment predictors of union attitudes: Replication and extension.

Replicates and extends the J. Barling et al (see record 1992-07316-001) model of family socialization of union attitudes on the basis of data from 87 students and their parents. Students' union attitudes were predicted by students' Marxist work beliefs and their perceptions of parental union attitudes. Students' perceptions of parental union attitudes and participation were predicted from parents' self-reported attitudes and participation.
