Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a complex orofacial pain syndrome characterized by the paroxysmal onset of pain attacks in the trigeminal distribution. The underlying mechanism for this debilitating condition is still not clearly understood. Decades of basic and clinical evidence support the demyelination hypothesis, where demyelination along the trigeminal afferent pathway is a major driver for TN pathogenesis and pathophysiology. Such pathological demyelination can be triggered by physical compression of the trigeminal ganglion or another primary demyelinating disease, such as multiple sclerosis. Further examination of TN patients and animal models has revealed significant molecular changes, channelopathies, and electrophysiological abnormalities in the affected trigeminal nerve. Interestingly, recent electrophysiological recordings and advanced functional neuroimaging data have shed new light on the global structural changes and the altered connectivity in the central pain-related circuits in TN patients. The current article aims to review the latest findings on the pathophysiology of TN and cross-examining them with the current surgical and pharmacologic management for TN patients. Understanding the underlying biology of TN could help scientists and clinicians to identify novel targets and improve treatments for this complex, debilitating disease. 相似文献

The effects of molecular structure and cooling conditions on the severity of draw resonance was investigated by carrying out carefully controlled melt spinning experiments. For the study, two types of polymeric materials were used: one which exhibits viscoelastic behavior (high-density polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene), and the other which exhibits almost Newtonian behavior [nylon-6 and poly(ethylene terephthalate)]. In order to investigate the effect of cooling on the severity of draw resonance, different methods of cooling the molten threadline were employed. In one set of experiments, isothermal chambers of various lengths (3, 6, and 12 in.) were attached to the spinnerette face, so that the molten threadline, upon exiting from the spinnerette, began to cool in the ambient air only after it had passed through the isothermal chamber. This method of cooling is called “delayed cooling,” providing both an isothermal region (inside the isothermal chamber) where only stretching occurs, and a nonisothermal region (outside the isothermal chamber) where both stretching and cooling occur simultaneously. In other experiments, the temperature profile of the molten threadline was controlled by adjusting the temperature of the heated chamber. This method of cooling provides a gradual drop of the threadline temperature, compared to the more sudden drop when spinning into a cold environment provided at the spinnerette exit. The severity of draw resonance was recorded on movie film, and the thread tension was measured with a low-force load cell transducer and recorded on a chart recorder. The temperature of the threadline along the spin direction was measured using a fiber optical probe attached to a Vanzetti Infrared Thermal Monitoring System (Model TM-1). It was found that the severity of draw resonance depended on the molecular structure and the way the molten threadline was cooled. Of particular interest is the observation that, for the viscoelastic materials investigated, cooling destabilized the molten threadline outside the isothermal chamber. This gave rise to more severe resonant behavior, at and above the critical draw-down ratio, in contradiction to the theoretical prediction by Fisher and Denn. It was observed, also, that the elasticity of the materials tended to destabilize the molten threadline (i.e., it increased the severity of draw resonance), again in contradiction to the theoretical prediction of Fisher and Denn. It is believed that morphological changes of polymers may play an important role in the occurrence of draw resonance when a melt threadline is stretched under cooling. Our study indicated that a good understanding of draw resonance of viscoelastic fluids requires more careful study than the classical hydrodynamic stability analysis reported by Fisher and Denn. They based their analysis on several convenient and yet unjustified assumptions, and solely on phenomenological considerations. We suggest that future theoretical analysis of draw resonance be carried out by considering a fluid model with a nonlinear memory function in order to properly account for the deformation history of the fluid, and the relaxation and cooling processes in the die swell region and the region below it. 相似文献

Laminar lifted butane flames diluted with nitrogen have been investigated experimentally to determine distinctive self-excitation regimes in the flame stability maps and also to elucidate the individual self-excitation characteristics. Self-excitations of lift-off height are classified into five regimes in laminar free-jet lift-off butane flames diluted with nitrogen: a stationary lifted regime (regime I), a heat-loss-induced self-excitation (regime II), a buoyancy-induced self-excitation due to flame flicker as well as a heat-loss-induced self-excitation (III), a combined form of an oscillation prior to blow-out and a heat-loss-induced oscillation (regime IV), and a combined form of an buoyancy-induced self-excitation and a heat-loss-induced oscillation as well as an additional buoyancy-driven self-excitation due to flame flicker (regime V). Extremely low-frequency (<0.1 Hz) self-excitation is caused by conductive heat loss from the premixed wings to the trailing diffusion flame and can be explained by a proposed mechanism. It is also found that the flame oscillation prior to flame blow-out is also caused by buoyancy and also significantly affected by the conductive heat loss from the premixed wings to the trailing diffusion flame, thereby showing that the frequency with nozzle exit velocity increases in the triple-flame propagation mode and then decreases in the flame-front propagation mode. Characterization of the individual self-excitation mode is presented and also discussed with Strouhal numbers and its relevant parameters through the analysis of power spectrum for temporal variation of lift-off height. 相似文献

The TiO2/substrate pearlescent pigments were prepared by the hydrolysis of TiOCl2 on the substrate followed by a calcinations process. The natural mica (muscovite), synthetic mica (fluorophlogopite) and -alumina flake were selected as the substrates for pearlescent pigments. The effect of substrate on the anatase to rutile (A–R) phase transformation of TiO2 was studied. The A–R phase transformation of TiO2 during the preparation of pearlescent pigments and their proportion in the TiO2 layer have been analyzed by XRD measurements. The phase compositions of TiO2 layer in each pearlescent pigment are quite different depending on the substrates. The TiO2 layer deposited on -alumina has higher rutile fraction than those on the natural and synthetic mica. The XPS analysis showed that the cations originally present in the substrates diffused into the TiO2 layer. The TiO2 layer deposited on -alumina contains Al, while those on the natural and synthetic mica substrates contain Si and K in addition to Al. The metal cations diffusing from the substrate into TiO2 layer might retard the A–R phase transformation of TiO2. The suppressing effect on the A–R transformation of TiO2 by mixed cations seems to be much stronger than that of single cation, resulting in relatively higher rutile fraction in the case of TiO2 layer deposited on -alumina. 相似文献

For several decades, a porous surface has been recognized as an efficient medium to increase boiling performance in a nucleate boiling regime. Most feasible porous surfaces have been studied in millimeter and micron-sized domains. It has been believed that a higher wall superheat is required to commence incipient nucleate boiling under a submicron regime. In this study, we demonstrate that a significantly enhanced pool boiling heat transfer is observed in a submicron regime through three dimensionally interconnected hybrid pores: the Alumina sponge-like nano-porous structure (ASNPS). The structural uniqueness of the ASNPS leads to an enlarged surface area, increases the potential number of the active nucleation site density, and improves the vapor–liquid menisci through the reentrant pore. Simultaneously, by changing the surface wettability with a hydrophobic self-assembled monolayer (SAM) coating, the number of active nucleation site density is improved. Eventually, the combination of the ASNPS and hydrophobic SAM coating can achieve substantial heat transfer coefficient (HTC) enhancement in the nucleate boiling. Also, the thickness of the ASNPS is a critical issue to adequately augment the HTC in pool boiling. The thickness of the ASNPS is optimized by examining the boiling performance of the ASNPS fabricated in different amounts of anodizing times. A classical mechanistic model from literature was modified and compared with the experimentally obtained data. The modified mechanistic model – with the combination of forced-convection and thin liquid film evaporation – showed reasonable predictions. 相似文献

Two slit dies have been designed, having aspect ratios of 10 and 20. Three melt pressure transducers were flush-mounted on the long side of the rectangular slot, along the longitudinal centerline of each die. The dies were then used to measure wall normal stresses along the longitudinal direction of polymer melts flowing through the thin slit. The polymeric materials investigated were high-density polyethylene, low-density polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene. The measurement of wall normal stresses were used to determine the rheological properties of melts, namely, the melt viscosity from the slope of axial pressure profiles and the melt elasticity from exit pressures. The present study shows that the rheological properties determined from the slit rheometer are in good agreement with those from the capillary rheometer reported in the author's earlier papers. Therefore it may be concluded that a slit die also may be used as a means of characterizing polymeric materials by their viscous and elastic properties in the molten state. 相似文献

In a previous study we modified a double lattice model by introducing a new interaction parameter, which improved the mathematical approximation defect, and gave a new expression for the Helmholtz energy of mixing. In the model the universal constants Cβ and Cγ in the primary lattice were determined by comparing them with literature Monte Carlo simulation data, which is the only case for r1 = 1 and r2 = 100 (case I). In this study we introduce new universal constants, Cβ and Cγ, as a function of the chain length of a polymer in a solvent (case II) by comparing them with other literature simulation data for various polymer chain lengths. The proposed model is compared with polymer–solvent systems. In an upper critical solution temperature phase behavior the theoretical results of case II were improved over those of case I. Isothermal melt spinning experiments were carried out to investigate the elongational flow behavior and spinnability of polymer blends and a calcium carbonate-filled polypropylene. Blends chosen for study were mixtures of polystyrene (Dow Chemical, Styron 678) with high-density polyethylene (Union Carbide, DMDJ 4309), and mixtures of polystyrene (Dow Chemical, Styron 686) with high-density polyethylene (Union Carbide, DMDJ 4309). For the study, measurements were taken of the thread diameter by photographic techniques and of the thread tension by means of a Saxl tensiometer. These measurements were later used to determine the elongational viscosity of the material investigated. It was found that, in all the blends and filled systems investigated, the elongational viscosity decreases with elongation rate and that the relationship between the elongational viscosity and blending ratio is very complex. An attempt is made to offer explanations of the observed complicated relationship with the aid of microphotographs of fiber samples, which display the complexity of fiber morphology in two-phase systems. Vanado-, ferri-, and gallosilicate catalysts were prepared from the mixtures containing colloidal silica, corresponding metal
source, tetrapropylammonium bromide, and NH4F by hydrothermal crystallization at 175°C for 7 days. The pH value of the reaction mixture was low (pH<8) compared to the
conventional methods. The metal compounds have higher solubilites in these conditions than conventional conditions (pH>10).

Field and laboratory studies were conducted to examine the differential phytotoxicity of residues ofArtemisia princeps var.orientalis (wormwood) using various plants as test species. Seedling elongation and dry weights of receptor plants were inversely proportional to the concentration and incubation time of dry leaves ofA. princeps var.orientalis in vermiculite. In seedling growth tests with abandoned field soils (control) and soil underneath wormwood plants (test), the elongation, dry weight, and caloric content of seedlings grown in the soil from under wormwood plants were severely inhibited, thereby suggesting that certain growth inhibitors were released from wormwood and the inhibitor remained in the soil. 相似文献
