Population exposure to pollutants in soil is an important public health concern. Difficult to measure, it is usually estimated using multimedia models. Modeling data predict that the skin surface is a predominant exposure route in roughly 15% of the US Superfund sites. Nonetheless, no study has confirmed these predictions. The SOLEX study was an opportunity to study the feasibility of estimating the cutaneous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs: all 16 of the United States Environmental Protection Agency list) load of workers at three former manufactured gas sites, one of those being under remediation. Over two measurement periods (November 1997 and June 1998), 30 and 28 volunteers, respectively, were equipped for a single day work with five pads that collected soil particles and were placed at the neck, shoulder, wrist, groin, and ankle. Pad contamination was observed for six of the nine workers on the site being remediated but not on other sites. The wrist pad was most often affected, followed by the neck pad, these are, the exposed regions of the body. The PAHs most frequently identified were anthracene, fluoranthene, naphthalene, phenanthrene, and pyrene, at concentrations relatively high. In conclusion, this study showed that estimating skin exposure to soil pollutants is feasible. Secondly, it suggested that only subjects in close contact with the soil had a detectable exposure to PAHs. Extension of this approach to other exposure settings is warranted, especially among children playing in polluted public or private gardens, because their games lead to frequent contact with the soil.  相似文献

The calculation of the intrinsic efficiency of individual crystals is one of the steps needed to obtain accurate images of the radioisotope distribution in positron emission tomography (PET). These efficiencies can be computed by comparing the number of coincidence counts obtained when the crystals are equally illuminated by the same source. However, because the number of coincidence counts acquired for one crystal also depends on the efficiency of the other crystals in coincidence, most methods of crystal efficiency calculation need to assume that the influence of the other crystals is negligible. If there are large crystal efficiency variations, this approximation may lead to systematic errors. We have recently implemented an iterative method for a single ring of detectors that does not rely on this assumption. In this paper, we describe a fully three-dimensional (3-D) iterative method that better exploits the sensitivity of the tomograph and allows reduced acquisition times or the use of narrow energy windows. We compare the performance of the iterative method (single-ring and extended to fully 3-D) with noniterative techniques for different acquisition times of a uniform cylinder. Two different energy windows were used to assess the performance of each method with different levels of variations of crystal efficiency. The results showed that the iterative methods are more accurate when large efficiency variations exist and that only the fully 3-D methods provided good efficiency estimates with very low duration scans. We, thus, conclude that iterative fully 3-D methods provide the best estimations and can be used in a larger range of situations than can the other methods tested.  相似文献

We address the issue of using deformable models to reconstruct an unknown attenuation map of the torso from a set of transmission scans. We assume the three-dimensional (3-D) distribution of attenuation coefficients to be piecewise uniform. We represent the unknown distribution by a set of closed surfaces defining regions having the same attenuating properties. The methods of reconstruction published so far tend to directly deform the surfaces, the parameters being the surface elements. Rather than deforming the surfaces, we explore the possibility of deforming the space in which the geometrical primitives are contained. We focus on the use of free-form deformations (FFD's) to describe the continuous transformation of space used to match a set of transmission measurements. We illustrate this approach by reconstructing realistically simulated transmission scans of the torso with various noise levels and compare the results to standard reconstruction methods.  相似文献

This study focuses on the prevalence of exercise and health-related leisure activities (smoking, drinking), across groups of subjects, defined by personality and gender, in relation to subjective well-being. Results from a cross-sectional survey of 187 participants are reported. Males (n = 80) reported more drinking (p < 0.001) and smoking (p < 0.001) than females, though they also reported higher habitual physical activity levels (p < 0.001). Females (n = 107) reported more frequent use of social support coping (p < 0.01). There was a positive association between extraversion and self-reported habitual physical activity as well as alcohol consumption (even when controlling for gender). Neuroticism was not related to any of the exercise and leisure activity variables. Multiple regression analyses predicted 34% of variance for the depression-enthusiasm and 39% of the variance for the anxiety-contentment measures of affective well-being. Neuroticism (p < 0.001) and avoidance coping (p < 0.05) were the only significant predictors of both anxiety-contentment and depression-enthusiasm. It is concluded that the influence of individual differences such as personality and gender on coping behaviour and well-being is consistent with social learning theory research. Limitations of cross-sectional research designs necessitate caution with inferring causal paths. Recommendations for future research are presented concerning the use and value of repeated measures designs within research into exercise and well-being.  相似文献

Transfer of learning involves the influence of previous experiences on the performance or learning of new skills. It is defined as a gain (or loss) in the capability for performance on one task as a result of practice on another. The aim of the study was to examine the degree of transfer between various association football skills. Twenty intermediate male players participated in the study. During pre- and post-training tests, participants juggled a football as many times as possible within 30 s using feet or knees. Further tests required participants to control an approaching football inside a restricted area using the preferred and non-preferred kicking leg. Following performance on the pretest, two matched skill groups were obtained. One group participated in a 4-week training period in which feet-only ball juggling was practised for 10 min daily, while the remaining group acted as a control. Trained participants exhibited superior post-test performance on knee juggling and ball control with preferred and non-preferred leg tasks relative to the control group (p < 0.05). Findings indicate positive transfer of learning from juggling practice with the feet to juggling with the knees and a football control task. Implications for theory and practice are highlighted.  相似文献

Workers in physically demanding occupations require rest breaks to recover from physiological stress and biomechanical loading. Physiological stress can increase the risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders and repeated loading of the spine may increase the potential for incurring back pain. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of an altered activity-rest schedule on physiological and spinal loading in hospital-based porters. An existing 4-h activity-rest schedule was obtained from observations on eight male porters. This schedule formed the normal trial, which included two 5- and one 15-min breaks. An alternative 4-h schedule was proposed (experimental condition) that had two breaks each of 12.5 min. It was hypothesized that the experimental trial is more effective in promoting recovery from physiological strain and spinal shrinkage than the normal trial, due to the 5-min breaks being insufficient to allow physiological variables to return to resting levels or the intervertebral discs to reabsorb fluid. Ten males performed both test conditions and oxygen uptake VO2, heart rate, minute ventilation VE, perceived exertion and spinal shrinkage were recorded. There were no significant differences in any of the measured variables between the two trials (p > 0.05). Median heart rates were 78 (range 71-93) and 82 (71-90) beats.min(-1) for the normal trial and the experimental trial respectively, indicating that the activity was of low intensity. The light intensity was corroborated by the oxygen uptakes (0.75, range 0.65-0.94 1.min(-1)). Spinal shrinkage occurred to the same extent in the two trials (2.12 +/- 3.16 mm and 2.88 +/- 2.92 mm in the normal trial and the experimental trial respectively). Varying the length and positioning of the rest breaks did not significantly affect the physiological responses or magnitude of spinal shrinkage between the two trials. More physically demanding work than the porters' schedule should induce greater physiological fatigue and spinal shrinkage. The ratio between activity and rest breaks would then become more important.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of hypoxia on parallel/preattentional and serial/attentional processes in early vision, and the use of a positive-end-expiratory-pressure (PEEP) to prevent the impairment in performance. Twenty-one subjects were submitted to an 8-h hypoxia exposure in a hypobaric chamber (4500 m, 589 hPa, 22 degrees C), both with and without a 5-cm H2O PEEP. Subjects carried out a visual search task consisting of detecting a target among distractors in normoxia, in acute and in prolonged hypoxia. Conjointly their sensitivity to acute mountain sickness (AMS) was scored through the Lake Louise AMS scoring system. Results showed that prolonged hypoxia slowed serial/attentional processing whereas parallel/preattentional processes were not impaired either by acute or by prolonged hypoxia. PEEP prevented serial/attentional processes from slowing and those effects were more clearly observed in the AMS sensitive subjects with respect to the AMS insensitive subjects. These results suggest that the slowing induced by prolonged hypoxia is specific to an early visual process that pilots the scanning of an attentional spotlight throughout the visual field.  相似文献

The cardiorespiratory and thermal responses of two intensities of treadmill exercise were compared for brief periods (12 min) in fire ensemble (FE) but without self contained breathing apparatus, and sports ensemble (SE), in a temperature environment. A further experiment explored the responses of subjects exercising in FE over a prolonged period (60 min). Eighteen male fire-fighters wearing either FE or SE walked on a level treadmill for 6 min at 5 km x h(-1) increasing to 7 km x h(-1) for 6 min. Following a recovery interval of 1 h, the exercise protocol was repeated in the second ensemble; the order of ensemble was balanced. Heart rate (HR), rectal temperature (Tre), VO2 max and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were monitored continuously under both ensembles. At 7 km x h(-1), VO2 was significantly higher (p<0.05) in FE (36.1 and 39.9 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)) than in SE and represented 74% VO2 max. There were no changes Tre. In experiment 2, following a rest interval of at least 36 h, eight subjects in FE walked on the treadmill at 6 km x h (gradient 10%) for 60 min also in temperate conditions, where HR, Tre and RPE were recorded at 10-min intervals. During the 60-min exercise in FE, HR reached 161 beats x min(-1) and Tre increased to 38.3 degrees C. Despite considerable subject discomfort, Tre remained below dangerous levels (38.4 degrees C). When RPE were compared with a physiological strain index (PSI) calculated from Tre and HR data over 60 min, there was no significant difference (p<0.05) with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.98. The results suggest that RPE and PSI are closely related when exercise is sufficiently prolonged or intense to elevate Tre and HR in fire-fighters wearing FE in temperate conditions. If further investigation confirms this relationship for hot humid conditions in which fire-fighters operate, then with training, it may provide individuals with a valid measure of dangerous levels of perceived heat strain.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the accuracy of the computerized 3D surface analyzing and volume measuring method in dentistry. Two different types of test objects were used in the first part of the measurements. Each sample of the two groups was cross-sectioned using a hard tissue microtome. The sections were photographed on both sides and were projected on a graphical tablet and analyzed using a computer program. The measured and calculated parameters were compared. In the second part, 200 microm thick horizontal sections were prepared from 11 human incisor roots using the hard tissue microtome. This way, five sections were prepared from the apical 2 mm of each root. The effects of section thickness and number were modeled by decreasing the inclusion rate of the obtained number of sections from 10 to 2 and its influence on the calculated results was determined. This method was suitable for the approximation and analysis of 3D parameters. The results indicated that using 200-300 microm section thickness, the measured values were approximately 8-21% lower than the real parameters.  相似文献
