Determination of Discrete-Structure Parameters of Coatings with Allowance for Residual Stresses

The authors suggest that the dimensions of a discrete section of a coating should be chosen on the basis of calculation of the critical crack spacing in cohesion cracking. This approach allows for residual stresses in the coating. The reliability of the calculation method has been verified experimentally by direct measurement of the crack spacing.     

Features of the photoconductivity of iodine-doped cotton fibers illuminated in the fundamental absorption range

The photoelectric properties of cotton fibers treated with iodine were studied in the fundamental absorption range. The samples exhibit a sublinear illumination-current characteristic and a long-term relaxation of photoconductivity (PC) after UV irradiation (hν=5 eV) of the iodine-doped fibers. A PC mechanism is proposed which explains both the nonlinear variation of photocurrent with illumination intensity and the PC decay according to a bimolecular recombination law after UV irradiation of the iodine-doped fiber in the fundamental absorption range.     

A RKHS interpolator-based graph matching algorithm

We present an algorithm for performing attributed graph matching. This algorithm is derived from a generalized framework for describing functionally expanded interpolators which is based on the theory of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHS). The algorithm incorporates a general approach to a wide class of graph matching problems based on attributed graphs, allowing the structure of the graphs to be based on multiple sets of attributes. No assumption is made about the adjacency structure of the graphs to be matched     

A Nonlinear Filtering Scheme for Multistage Statistically Uncertain Systems

A filtering scheme for multistage systems under uncertain probability distributions of perturbations is studied. A recurrent scheme for constructing point state estimates is designed and its relation with guaranteed filtering theory is determined. This scheme covers the case in which both uncertain and random perturbations are present.     

Radiation-Induced graft copolymerization of methacrylic acid onto polypropylene fibers. V. Mechanical properties

Mechanical properties of polypropylene-g-poly(methacrylic acid) fibers, prepared by graft copolymerization of methacrylic acid onto polypropylene fiber using simultaneous gamma ray irradiation technique, were evaluated. In general, an improvement in the mechanical behavior of the polypropylene fiber by grafting was observed. Denier and initial modulus of the fiber showed a linear increase with the percent graft, and elongation showed an opposite trend. The results have been explained in terms of reinforcing effect of poly(methacrylic acid) grafts and reduction in the segmental mobility of the polymeric chains. Tenacity also increases up to certain graft level, beyond which a sharp decrease occurs, probably due to the influence on the compactness of the macromolecular chains with the further grafting.     

Gigahertz signal processing using reflex optoelectronic switching matrices

The application of reflex optoelectronic switching matrices (ROSM) to signal processing in the gigahertz region is analyzed. Various signal processing functions such as delay generation, loop filtering, word generation/detection, integration, and digital to analog conversion are identified and their respective realizations in a ROSM are presented. It is found that for dedicated signal processing functions, simpler submatrices instead of full matrices can be employed with significant reduction in complexity and cost. The performance of ROSM's using currently commercially available components confirms the feasibility of gigahertz signal processing with ROSM's.     

Yield surface linearization in elastoplastic analysis

A method for the historical elastoplastic analysis of plane frames under the assumption of small deformation theory is presented. Interaction of bending moment and axial force is taken into account. A major feature of the procedure lies in the piecewise linearization of the convex nonlinear yield surface, thereby guaranteeing the satisfaction of both equilibrium and yield conditions. Local unloading can also be catered for. A computer program based on this technique has been written and three simple numerical examples are given to illustrate its capabilities.
