Polarization-maintaining fibers and their applications are reviewed. The classification of high-birefringent fibers and low-birefringent fibers and their fabrication methods and characteristics are discussed in Section II. Analytical methods and numerical methods for fiber design on the birefringence are presented in Section III. Degradation factors of polarization maintenance expressed as crosstalk or mode-coupling parameters caused by internal origins such as structural imperfections, wavelength, and nonlinear effects, and by external origins such as temperature fluctuations, mechanical perturbations, and electromagnetic effects, are discussed in Section IV. Characterization methods on beat length, mode coupling, stress distribution, and mechanical strength are presented in Section V. Applications to the fiber devices and nonlinear effects, and splicing methods for the polarization-maintaining fibers are described in Sections VI and VII.  相似文献

The fabrication processings and the preliminary bias-temperature life tests for planar-type InGaAs/InP heterostructure avalanche photodiodes (HAPD's) made from VPE-grown wafers are presented. The plasma deposited SiNxpassivation film showed a surface state density Nssof less than 1012cm-2. eV-1. An anomalous behavior of Cd diffusion velocity was observed in the process of the guard-ring formation. A Cr/Au p-side electrode made it possible to reduce the contact failure compared to an Au/Zn contact. Bias-temperature life tests were carried out at three temperature levels: 80, 120, and 180°C. Low-bias life tests (V_{R} = 10V) were tried at first for the diodes without a guard-ring structure for times exceeding 10 000 h. The HAPD's with the guard-ring have been tested under the condition of high electric field (>4 times 10^{5}V/cm). The stable devices have been operating up to 6000 h under the high field condition even at 180°C. The HAPD's are still at the prototype stage. Thus, the test results are considered to be encouraging as to achieving highly reliable photodiodes.  相似文献

A novel optical circulator is reported which employs an yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG) sphere, PANDA-fibre polarisers and a fibre-optic polarising beam splitter. The splitting ratios of the fibre-optic polarising beam splitter were 1.0:99.0 for x-polarisation and 97.5:2.5 for y-polarisation, with an excess loss of 0.5 dB at 1.30 ?m wavelength. The backward isolation of the optical circulator was 30 dB with the total insertion loss of 4.5 dB.  相似文献

Static corrosion tests were performed in molten salts, LiF–BeF2 (Flibe) and LiF–NaF–KF (Flinak), at 500 °C and 600 °C for 1000 h. The purpose is to investigate the corrosion characteristics of reduced activation ferritic steels, JLF-1 (8.92Cr–2W) in the fluids. The concentration of hydrogen fluoride (HF) in the fluids was measured by slurry pH titration method before and after the exposure. The HF concentration determined the fluoridation potential. The corrosion was mainly caused by dissolution of Fe and Cr into the fluids due to fluoridation and/or electrochemical corrosion. Carbon on the surface might be dissolved into the fluids due to the corrosion, and this resulted to the decrease of carbide on the surface. The corrosion depth of the JLF-1 specimen, which was obtained from the weight losses, was 0.637 μm in Flibe at 600 °C and 6.73 μm in Flinak at 600 °C.  相似文献

The first measurements of dynamic spectra of an InGaAsP/InP electroabsorption light modulator under high-frequency large-signal modulation are reported. A spectral broadening factor ? was determined from the relative sideband strength to the carrier, and it decreased with increasing operating electric field in the modulator. The estimated ?-value for full modulation was |?| = 2.3, which can be reduced by designing a modulator to give a more effective change of electro-absorption.  相似文献

A highly efficient TE-TM mode conversion device utilizing the acoustooptic effect has been demonstrated. Mode conversion has been made by an acoustic surface wave propagating collinearly with an optical guided wave. The maximum mode conversion, although the fraction was restricted to 70 percent, has been obtained with an acoustic power of only 55 mW (electrical input 0.55 W). Effective interaction length of the present device is limited to 5 mm due to optical and/or acoustic inhomogeneity of the waveguides. For selecting TE and TM waves, a polarizer is constructed monolithically and the extinction ratio is improved by up to 21 dB. Performance characteristics of a tunable optical filter of this type of the mode conversion are also discussed.  相似文献

Vector control and the detection (followed by treatment) of infected individual are the two methods currently available for the control of sleeping sickness. The basic reproduction rate of a compartmental model (Kermack and McKendrick) is used to analyze and compare the two strategies. The model shows that when there is a long first stage characteristic of an endemic situation, the detection of sick individuals is more efficient than vector control. This higher efficiency of detection decreases in a epidemic situation. In this case vector control in the form of a decrease in vector density and/or an increase in vector mortality is relatively more efficient than detection. Because it is squared in the basic reproduction rate, the probability of a tsetse blood meal on humans is an important and sensitive parameter in the study of control strategies. This sensitivity has been observed previously and empirically by field workers. When the probability of a tsetse blood meal on humans is above a certain value, vector control becomes warranted or even necessary.  相似文献

The prediction of minimum fluidization velocity for vibrated fluidized bed was performed. The Geldart group A and C particles were used as the fluidizing particles. The method based on Ergun equation was used to predict the minimum fluidization velocity. The calculated results were compared with the experimental data.The calculated results of minimum fluidization velocity are in good agreement with experimental data for Geldart group A particles. For group C particles, the difference between the calculated results and experimental data is large because of the formation of agglomerates. In this case, the determination of agglomerate diameter is considered to be necessary to predict the minimum fluidization velocity.  相似文献

In a placebo-controlled double-blind study, we examined the effects of dressing containing plant sterol (PS) on blood lipids and the safety in Japanese borderline or mildly hypercholesterolemic subjects. Fifty-nine subjects [total cholesterol (TC) concentration > or = 200 mg/dL] were randomly divided into two groups and were given daily 15 g of dressing containing 800 mg of PS [PS(+)-group] or without PS [PS(-)-group] for 12 weeks. Every 4 weeks, fasting blood was examined and subjective symptoms were analyzed. Serum TC, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and apolipoprotein B (ApoB) concentrations did not change in the PS(-)-group, while TC and ApoB significantly decreased in the PS(+)-group at 8 and 12 weeks and LDL-C at 4, 8 and 12 weeks. Moreover, serum TC, LDL-C and ApoB concentrations were significantly lower than those of PS(-)-group at 8 and 12 weeks. Other laboratory tests were all in normal ranges and no adverse events were observed. The results indicated that PS-containing dressing decreased serum TC, LDL-C and ApoB concentrations in borderline or mildly hypercholesterolemic subjects. It is therefore proved that the dressing containing PS is helpful in maintaining blood cholesterol level normal and hence, the health of Japanese.  相似文献
