A Comparison of Antialiasing Techniques

Three antialiasing techniques were applied to a scene of moderate complexity. Early results suggest that prefiltering is still the most computationally effective method.     

Social support and the prediction of health complications among persons with spinal cord injuries.

Examined the relationship between interpersonal behavior and adjustment to spinal cord injury in 95 patients (aged 20–66 yrs) hospitalized at 3 facilities. In the 1st study, where predictor variables included social support, depression, and demographic factors, elements of social support were not significantly associated with reasons for hospitalizations. Older age, complete lesions, and paraplegia were significantly related to skin breakdown, cognitive problems, and less likelihood of routine checkups; tetraplegia was associated with checkups. The 2nd study reviewed the medical charts of 52 Ss from the 1st study and tallied the incidence of decubitus ulcers and urinary tract infections reported during the year. Discriminant function analysis found level of injury, lesion, age, depression, and elements of social support to be significantly predictive of health complications. The diversity of potential cheese ripening characteristics of lactic acid starter bacteria: 1. Resistance to cell lysis and levels and cellular distribution of proteinase activities

By reference to subcellular fraction markers, the resistance to lysis of 23 strains of Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris, 30 strains of L. lactis subsp. lactis and five strains of Streptococcus thermophilus and the levels and distribution of proteinase activity in the strains were determined. Strains of L. lactis subsp. cremoris were readily lysed by transfer to hypotonic buffer after treatment with lysozyme alone, whilst strains of L. lactis subsp. lactis and S. thermophilus could be efficiently lysed in this way only after treatment with a combination of lysozyme and mutanolysin. With a few notable exceptions, those strains which gave the fastest rates of acid production also generally presented higher levels of cell surface proteinase, as determined by activity on fluorescein isothiocyanate-labelled β-casein. The highest levels of cell surface proteinase detected were found for strains of L. lactis subsp. cremoris. However, the levels of total proteinase activity in the lactococcal strains did not correlate with the rate of acid production in milk, some slow acid-producers yielding similar or greater total proteinase levels than fast acid-producers. Homology to DNA probes for the lactococcal cell surface proteinase gene and to the conserved region encoding the serine proteinase active site was shown by the fast acid-producing lactococcal strains, but not by most of the slow acid-producing lactococcal strains or by the strains of S. thermophilus. A significant proportion of the total proteinase activity was recovered in the subcellular fractions in which high levels of cytoplasmic marker enzyme activity were found. The total proteinase levels detected in strains ofL. lactis subsp. lactis showed a greater range of variation than in the strains of L. lactis subsp. cremoris. High levels of total proteinase activity were found in the slow acid-producers despite the strains having been grown in the presence of yeast extract. For many of the strains, the levels of proteinase released from the cell surface during cell wall degradation with lytic enzyme treatment were higher than those found using whole cells, suggesting that a significant amount of proteolytic activity was either inaccessible to substrate or present in an inactive form.     

Collaborative distance education in power engineering

This paper presents a perspective on offering “shared-courses,” or courses simultaneously offered at two or more universities via various distance educational frameworks. Over a three year duration, two senior/graduate level courses were jointly developed and offered to the students at the University of Missouri-Rolla, the University of Arkansas, Kansas State University, and Purdue University. This paper discusses the various distance educational technologies including two-way audio/visual via ISDN line, video-tapes, and web-based conferencing. Both instructor and student reactions to these mediums are included. Pedagogical methods appropriate for these mediums are outlined. The paper concludes with recommendations and strategies for engineering institutions who would like to "course-share" with other universities and industry

This article presents the historical development of research and development at the English National Board (ENB) in relation to its statutory function. The author explains the commissioning process in general terms to help prospective applicants to understand how the Board assesses research proposals and awards contracts.     

New scientific opportunities at very high magnetic fields

The establishment of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) in Tallahassee, FL and at the Los Alamos National Laboratory NM will provide the U.S. with a unique opportunity to explore new scientific phenomena in magnetic fields that are significantly higher than presently available. The facilities to be developed within the new NHMFL will include continuous fields to 45 tesla and pulsed fields to 200 tesla. We will review some of the promising new areas of the physics of quantum fluids and solids, superconductivity, materials science and engineering, and advanced technologies that will be able to be studied and developed at the new facility. An overview of the scope of the laboratories facilities, planned scheduling and the proposed timetable for the installation of magnet systems for this new national user facility is presented.The NHMFL is supported by the State of Florida and the National Science Foundation under cooperative agreement #DMR9016241.     

Frenchay Aphasia Screening Test: validity and comparability

The Frenchay Aphasia Screening Test1 is a reliable test which can be used by non-specialists to discriminate between aphasia and normal language. Preliminary studies have shown good test-retest reliability, and the test itself is quick and simple to use. The present investigation examines the validity of the test by comparing the results of this test with those on more structured, detailed and frequently used assessments of aphasia -the Minnesota Test for Differential Diagnosis of Aphasia (MTDDA) and general performance in communication as reflected by the Functional Communication Profile. The results demonstrate a positive correlation between the tests, and this allows confidence in the use of this test by non-specialists as a screening instrument.
