The chemical disinfection of drinking water to control microbial contaminants results in the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). The volatile trihalomethanes and the nonvolatile haloacetic acids (HAAs) are the most prevalent DBPs. It is important to monitor human exposure to HAAs because of their potential adversehealth effects, such as cancer. Among the HAAs, urinary trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) is a potential valid biomarker for assessing chronic ingestion exposure to HAAs from drinking water. We have developed a rugged, high-throughput, sensitive, accurate, and precise assay for the measurement of trace levels of TCAA in human urine using a simple solid-phase extraction (SPE) cleanup followed by isotope dilution high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). TCAA is extracted from the urine using SPE, separated from other extract components by reversed-phase HPLC, and analyzed by negative ion electrospray ionization-isotope dilution-MS/MS using a multiple reaction monitoring experiment. The method is simple and fast and is not labor intensive (sample preparation and analysis can be performed in approximately 15 min) with a limit of detection of 0.5 ng/mL in 1 mL of urine.  相似文献

Small-diameter cylindrical imaging platforms, such as those being considered in the development of in vivo ultrasonic microprobes, pose unique image formation challenges. The curved apertures they provide are incompatible with many of the commonly used frequency-domain synthetic aperture imaging algorithms. At the same time, their frequently small diameters place limits on the available aperture and the angular resolution that may be achieved. We obtain a three-dimensional, frequency-domain imaging algorithm for this geometry by making suitable approximations to the point spread function for wave propagation in cylindrical coordinates and obtaining its Fourier transform by analogy with the equivalent problem in Cartesian coordinates. For the most effective use of aperture, we propose using a focused transducer to place a virtual source a short distance from the probe. The focus is treated as a diverging source by the imaging algorithm, which then forms images on deeper cylindrical shells. This approach retains the simplicity and potential angular resolution of a single element, yet permits full use of the available probe aperture and a higher energy output. Computer simulations and experimental results using wire targets show that this imaging technique attains the resolution limit dictated by the operating wavelength and the transducer characteristics  相似文献

We demonstrate the sensing and correction of an isoplanatic refractive distortion (not lens aberrations), using the complete measurement of the partially coherent field in an aperture that the previously described astigmatic coherence sensor provides. Isoplanatic distortions, and in general distortions that do not cause energy loss, maintain the orthogonality of the coherent modes. We use the fact that a common distortion will occur to all coherent modes to separate the distortion from the source behind it, rather than requiring a reference source at a different wavelength. Digital deconvolution was performed on the full four-dimensional partially coherent field for simultaneously computing the distortion and the source intensity distribution.  相似文献

Adequately preparing for and responding to terrestrial (land-based) chemical spills are critical to the protection of human health and the environment. To facilitate analysis and support decision-making for such events, the authors have developed an environmental risk management system that characterizes the ability of a spilled chemical to immediately impact human health, groundwater, surface water, and soil resources, and incorporates these four risk areas into an overall measure of terrestrial chemical risk. This system incorporates a risk index model, leverages geographic information systems (GIS) technology, and contains a comprehensive chemical and environmental database to assess and delineate the immediate threat posed by a terrestrial chemical spill. It is designed to serve a variety of stakeholders, including managers and policy-makers, who would benefit from generating screening-level environmental risk assessments without requiring a technical background or collection of detailed environmental and chemical data. Areas of potential application include transportation routing, industrial zoning, environmental regulatory compliance and enforcement, spill response, and security planning.  相似文献

An optical metamaterial is a composite in which subwavelength features, rather than the constituent materials, control the macroscopic electromagnetic properties of the material. Recently, properly designed metamaterials have garnered much interest because of their unusual interaction with electromagnetic waves. Whereas nature seems to have limits on the type of materials that exist, newly invented metamaterials are not bound by such constraints. These newly accessible electromagnetic properties make these materials an excellent platform for demonstrating unusual optical phenomena and unique applications such as subwavelength imaging and planar lens design. 'Negative-index materials', as first proposed, required the permittivity, epsilon, and permeability, mu, to be simultaneously less than zero, but such materials face limitations. Here, we demonstrate a comparatively low-loss, three-dimensional, all-semiconductor metamaterial that exhibits negative refraction for all incidence angles in the long-wave infrared region and requires only an anisotropic dielectric function with a single resonance. Using reflection and transmission measurements and a comprehensive model of the material, we demonstrate that our material exhibits negative refraction. This is furthermore confirmed through a straightforward beam optics experiment. This work will influence future metamaterial designs and their incorporation into optical semiconductor devices.  相似文献

Modules that perform photorefractive two-beam coupling operations have been built, characterized, and tested. These portable modules, interconnected by fiber optics, dispense with the need for repeated alignment and greatly facilitate the prototyping of complex signal- or image-processing photorefractive circuits. To evaluate the performance of the modules in a photorefractive circuit, we interconnected them in the feature extractor configuration: a ring configuration composed of two modules that selects the strongest signal within the signals presented on its input. With two signals at the input, an output contrast ratio of 45.4 dB is obtained for an input contrast ratio of 5 dB.  相似文献

The optical constants of water ice have been determined in the near infrared from 4000 to 7000 cm(-1). Polycrystalline ice films with thickness as great as ~1164 mum were formed by condensation of water vapor on a cold silicon substrate at temperatures of 166, 176, 186, and 196 K. The transmission of light through the ice films was measured during their growth from 0 to 1164 mum over the frequency range of approximately 500-7000 cm(-1). The optical constants were extracted by means of simultaneously fitting the calculated transmission spectra of films of varying thickness to their respective measured transmission spectra with an iterative Kramers-Kronig technique. Equations are presented to account for reflection losses at the interfaces when the sample is held in a cell. These equations are used to reanalyze the transmission spectrum of water ice (358-mum sample at 247 K) recorded by Ockman in 1957 [Philos. Mag. Suppl. 7, 199 (1958)]. Our imaginary indices for water ice are compared with those of Gosse et al. [Appl. Opt. 34, 6582 (1995)], Kou et al. [Appl. Opt. 32, 3531 (1993)], Grundy and Schmitt [J. Geophys. Res. 103, 25809 (1998)], and Warren [Appl. Opt. 23, 1206 (1984)], and with the new indices from Ockman's spectrum. The temperature dependence in the imaginary index of refraction observed by us between 166 and 196 K and that between our data at 196 K and the data of Gosse et al. at 250 K are compared with that predicted by the model of Grundy and Schmitt. On the basis of this comparison a linear interpolation of the imaginary indices of refraction between 196 and 250 K is proposed. We believe that the accuracy of this interpolation is better than 20%.  相似文献

We previously developed a retinal birefingence scanning (RBS) device to detect eye fixation. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a new binocular RBS (BRBS) instrument can detect simultaneous fixation of both eyes. Control (nonmyopic and myopic) and strabismic subjects were studied by use of BRBS at a fixation distance of 45 cm. Binocularity (the percentage of measurements with bilateral fixation) was determined from the BRBS output. All nonstrabismic subjects with good quality signals had binocularity >75%. Binocularity averaged 5% in four subjects with strabismus (range of 0-20%). BRBS may potentially be used to screen individuals for abnormal eye alignment.  相似文献

The problem of the disagreement between cirrus crystal sizes determined remotely and by in situ measurements is shown to be due to inappropriate application of Mie theory. We retrieved the absorption optical depth at 8.3 and 11.1 mum from 11 tropical anvil cirrus clouds, using data from the High Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS). We related the absorption optical depth ratio between the two wavelengths to crystal size (the size was defined in terms of the crystal median mass dimension) by assuming Mie theory applied to ice spheres and anomalous diffraction theory (ADT) applied to hexagonal columns, hexagonal plates, bullet rosettes, and aggregates (polycrystals). The application of Mie theory to retrievals yielded crystal sizes approximately one third those obtained with ADT. The retrievals of crystal size by use of HIRS data are compared with measurements of habit and crystal size obtained from in situ measurements of tropical anvil cirrus particles. The results of the comparison show that ADT provides the more realistic retrieval. Moreover, we demonstrate that at infrared wavelengths retrieval of crystal size depends on assumed habit. The reason why Mie theory predicts smaller sizes than ADT is shown to result from particle geometry and enhanced absorption owing to the capture of photons from above the edge of the particle (tunneling). The contribution of particle geometry to absorption is three times greater than from tunneling, but this process enhances absorption by a further 35%. The complex angular momentum and T-matrix methods are used to show that the contribution to absorption by tunneling is diminished as the asphericity of spheroidal particles is increased. At an aspect ratio of 6 the contribution to the absorption that is due to tunneling is substantially reduced for oblate particles, whereas for prolate particles the tunneling contribution is reduced by 50% relative to the sphere.  相似文献

To show how apertures affect measurements of the circularly polarized components of light scattered to a detector, we develop two methods of averaging the V and I Stokes parameters over a circular aperture that collects light scattered from an optically active sphere. One method uses a two-dimensional numerical integration that is appropriate for small apertures, and the other gives analytical expressions for scattering into a solid angle of any size. We identify the aperture locations that, independent of aperture size, give an average V (and an effective degree of circular polarization) of zero for scattering from an optically inactive sphere and of nonzero for scattering from an optically active sphere.  相似文献
