Abstract: This paper presents the application of a Stereo‐Digital Image Correlation (Stereo‐DIC) based approach for full‐field deformation measurements on a porcine intervertebral disc (IVD) under in‐vitro loading. Full‐field capabilities of Stereo‐DIC provide useful information on the IVD structure‐function relationship needed for designing novel disc replacement devices on the basis of biomimetic concepts. In this work, the use of a multi‐view Stereo‐DIC system allows full‐field measurement over more than 180° of the IVD surface. This is achieved by sequentially moving a single camera through seven fixed positions in order to cover the desired angle of vision. Ad hoc data processing and merging procedures are calibrated for a cylindrical sample. Strain maps are determined for a rubber cylinder subjected to rigid‐body motions and then to uniform compression. These preliminary procedures serve to evaluate strain‐mapping errors as well as to assess repeatability and accuracy of camera re‐positioning. Once the entire procedure is verified and calibrated, a fresh porcine functional spine unit is loaded under anterior, posterior and lateral compression. From displacement maps obtained with the multi‐view set‐up, it is possible to gather information on both IVD bulging and surface strains. Results are consistent with the IVD global behaviour under standard testing protocols reported in the recent literature. Furthermore, detailed information on local variations in structural response and stiffness properties occurring when load is applied in different regions of the IVD are obtained. The present approach allows to correlate structural response with the entire 3‐D deformation and strain field and not just with a single displacement/strain component and thus it could be effectively used for explaining in‐homogeneity observed in human discs degenerative patterns.  相似文献

We demonstrate that it is possible to convert CdSe nanocrystals of a given size, shape (either spherical or rod shaped), and crystal structure (either hexagonal wurtzite, i.e., hexagonal close packed (hcp), or cubic sphalerite, i.e., face-centered cubic (fcc)), into ZnSe nanocrystals that preserve all these characteristics of the starting particles (i.e., size, shape, and crystal structure), via a sequence of two cation exchange reactions, namely, Cd(2+) ?Cu(+) ?Zn(2+). When starting from hexagonal wurtzite CdSe nanocrystals, the exchange of Cd(2+) with Cu(+) yields Cu(2)Se nanocrystals in a metastable hexagonal phase, of which we could follow the transformation to the more stable fcc phase for a single nanorod, under the electron microscope. Remarkably, these metastable hcp Cu(2)Se nanocrystals can be converted in solution into ZnSe nanocrystals, which yields ZnSe nanocrystals in a pure hcp phase.  相似文献

Effects of feeding sodium chlorate on carcass quality, tenderness and color stability were evaluated. Heifers (n=64) were fed chlorate at either 0.01% or 0.05% of body weight (BW) in the last feeding or 0.01% for the last 5d before harvest, while control cattle received no chlorate. During the 12h period between feed withdrawal and transport to the harvest facility, the cattle were provided water containing either no sodium chlorate or sodium chlorate (approximately 30mM). Feed treatments at 0.01% of BW produced higher marbling scores than feeding 0.01% of BW for 5d. However, neither of these treatments produced marbling scores that were different from non-treated controls. Water supplementation increased tenderness in cattle fed 0.01% of BW for 5d, but decreased tenderness in cattle fed 0.05% of BW at the last feeding. Although tenderness differences existed, it is not clear whether or not they were caused by the feed or water treatments or by pre-existing variation in the cattle. Neither feed nor water supplementation affected color stability. These data suggest that chlorate preparations could be used to reduce pathogens without adversely impacting meat quality or display life. However, further research is needed to further substantiate these findings.  相似文献

We describe three cases of central diabetes insipidus, each with a different pathogenesis, in which unexpected hyperintensity of the posterior pituitary gland was seen on T1-weighted MR images obtained at the time of presentation. In the first case (idiopathic), the posterior pituitary signal persisted more than 10 years; in the second case (Langerhans cell histiocytosis), the signal disappeared within 3 months, despite early specific chemotherapy with etoposide; and in the third case (transient), the posterior signal disappeared within 1 year, but it was documented at the time of spontaneous reversal of polyuria and polydipsia.  相似文献

Endoscopic data reveal that mucosal disease frequently recurs following the surgical treatment of chronic diffuse hyperplastic frontal sinus and nasofrontal duct disease. However, this group of patients often remains asymptomatic. We present 40 patients who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery with a 4-year mean follow-up. Postoperative endoscopy revealed mucosal disease within the frontal recess in 39 of the 40 (97.5%) patients; however, only 3 of the 40 (7.5%) were symptomatic. Of these 3 patients, 1 underwent revision surgery. Historical information demonstrates the potential for significant nasofrontal duct stenosis associated with such revision surgery. On the basis of our initial results, endoscopic observation and medical therapy seem to be successful in controlling the symptoms associated with this disease process.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Olive mill wastewater (OMW) is a pollutant by-product from the virgin olive oil production. Its high content in phenolic compounds makes them play an important role for their use in foods, for their high antioxidant significance. The present paper gives an overview on the techniques for OMW valuable ingredient separation, focusing on the most effective ones for their use in food products as functional ingredients. We report on effective methods to recover OMW phenolics, and give several examples on the use these extracts in foods. When added into vegetable oils, their effect on retarding lipid oxidation improves the oxidative status of the product, whilst several challenges need to be faced. OMW phenolic extracts were also used in food emulsions, milk products or other model systems, showing promising results and little or no negative impact on the sensory characteristics or other properties. Their possible use as antimicrobial agents is also another promising approach, as positive results were obtained when applied in meat products. Other examples of using natural phenolic extracts from other sources are suggested also for OMW extracts, to expand their use and thus to improve the nutritional and technological quality of foods.  相似文献

A Pt(II) complex, bearing an oligo‐ethyleneoxide pendant, is able to self‐assemble in ultralong ribbons that display mechanochromism upon nanoscale mechanical stimuli, delivered through atomic force microscopy (AFM). Such observation paves the way to fine understanding and manipulation of the mechanochromic properties of such material at the nanoscale. AFM allows quantitative assessment of nanoscale mechanochromism as arising from static pressure (piezochromism) and from shear‐based mechanical stimuli (tribochromism), and to compare them with bulk pressure‐dependent luminescence observed with diamond‐anvil cell (DAC) technique. Confocal spectral imaging reveals that mechanochromism only takes place within short distance from the localized mechanical stimulation, which allows to design high‐density information writing with AFM nanolithography applied on individual self‐assembled ribbons. Each ribbon hence serves as an individual microsystem for data storage. The orange luminescence of written information displays high contrast compared to cyan native luminescence; moreover, it can be selectively excited with visible light. In addition, ribbons show photochromism, i.e., the emission spectrum changes upon exposure to light, in a similar way as upon mechanical stress. Photochromism is here conveniently used to conceal and eventually erase information previously written with nanolithography by irradiation.  相似文献
