Study on the changing regularity of structure and properties of PC aged outdoor in western areas of China

As an important engineering material, polycarbonate (PC) has been used widely. When exposed to the environment, PC will have aging process, which will reduce its performance and efficiency. This article studies the changing regularities of PCs structure and properties of ageing in western areas of China by measuring the change of intrinsic viscosity (IV), thermal decomposition temperature, glass transition temperature, and the groups within PC. The analysis of its IV, DSC, and thermo gravimetric analysis exhibited the same changing regularity, i.e., the aged PC (in Lasa, Yuli, and Jiangjin) experienced degradation and crosslinking, while degradation occurred earlier in the process of ageing, crosslinking predominated in later period. In addition, the results of UV absorption spectra and infrared absorption spectra showed the evidence of decomposition of the ester groups, resulting in the production of alcohol and phenol. And the results of mechanical tests indicated that the ductility disappeared mainly in the first year of outdoor aging. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012     

Different metabolic and absorption patterns of betaine in response to dietary intake of whole-wheat grain, wheat aleurone or rye aleurone in catheterized pigs

In the present study, a novel method of measuring the uptake of nutrients by 1H NMR spectroscopy was performed to determine dietary effects. Six pigs catheterized in the portal vein and mesenteric artery were fed breads made from whole-wheat grain (WWG), wheat aleurone flour (WAF; 19?% aleurone of bread) or rye aleurone flour (RAF; 15?% aleurone of bread) in a repeated 3?×?3 crossover design. Three meals were provided daily (at 0, 5 and 10?h), and each period comprised of 1?week. Portal and arterial blood samples were collected at fasting (?30?min) on day 4–7, and on day 7, pooled blood samples were collected at 0–2.5, 2.5–5, 5–7.5 and 7.5–10?h after first (0?h) daily meal. Using the arterial-venous difference and ANOVA–simultaneous component analysis, plasma betaine was found to accumulate during the experimental period. On day 7, plasma betaine concentrations was 20–40?% higher than when feeding the WAF diet compared with RAF and WWG (P?=?0.001), whereas the content of betaine in the WAF diet was about twice as high. The arterial-venous difference showed a tendency (P?=?0.078) for the diet–time interaction of betaine absorption in the absorption phases but there was no diet effect (P?=?0.31), which indicates a steady-state absorption has been reached on day 7. Furthermore, high plasma betaine levels correlated with low plasma creatine of endogenous origin. In conclusion, the explorative method revealed that the plasma concentration and absorption of betaine were differentially modified by the diets.     

Cholesteric monomer and elastomers containing menthyl groups: Synthesis and phase behavior

The synthesis of a new cholesteric monomer ( M_LC) containing menthyl groups and a series of cholesteric elastomers ( LCE₁−LCE₄ ) is described. Their chemical structures and purity were characterized by FTIR, ¹H-NMR, and elemental analyses. The phase behavior and thermal stability were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. By inserting a flexible spacer between the mesogenic core and the terminal menthyl groups, mesomorphism of M _LC was realized. LCE₁−LCE₄ with low content of crosslinking unit exhibited cholesteric phase because of the introduction of the nematic crosslinking unit. This indicates that low levels of chemical crosslinking do not significantly affect the phase behavior and mesomorphism of the elastomers, and reversible mesophase transitions can be observed. In addition, with increasing the content of crosslinking unit, the corresponding T_g decreased for LCE₁−LCE₄ , whereas their T_i did not remarkable change. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An information based feedback control for audio-motor binaural localization

In static scenarios, binaural sound localization is fundamentally limited by front-back ambiguity and distance non-observability. Over the past few years, “active” schemes have been shown to overcome these shortcomings, by combining spatial binaural cues with the motor commands of the sensor. In this context, given a Gaussian prior on the relative position to a source, this paper determines an admissible motion of a binaural head which leads, on average, to the one-step-ahead most informative audio-motor localization. To this aim, a constrained optimization problem is set up, which consists in maximizing the entropy of the next predicted measurement probability density function over a cylindric admissible set. The method is appraised through geometrical arguments, and validated in simulations and on real-life robotic experiments.     

Case Study – The Making of an Institutional Crisis: The Mass Release of Inmates by a Correctional Agency

A US state correctional agency inadvertently released a large numbers of inmates before expiration of their sentences. This created an institutional crisis, for three reasons. First, the correctly timed release of inmates is unequivocally central the agency's core mission. Second, the early releases were consequential, in that serious crimes were committed by those only out of prison because of early release. Third, a citizen alerted the agency of an early‐release calculation for a particular offender, but the agency failed to act on this information. The correctional agency responded to this crisis by changing both its operating procedure and its culture.

Effects of different electrolytes containing Na2WO4 on the electrochemical performance of nickel hydroxide electrodes for nickel–metal hydride batteries

To improve the high-temperature performance of the nickel hydroxide electrodes in nickel–metal hydride batteries, sodium tungstate (Na₂WO₄) used as an electrolyte additive has been added into two types of binary electrolytes (KOH–LiOH and NaOH–LiOH) in this study. The effects of electrolyte composition on the electrochemical performance of nickel electrodes have been systematically investigated via a combination of cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and charge/discharge tests. It is found that by adding (1.0 wt.%) Na₂WO₄, the performance of nickel electrodes is significantly improved in both NaOH and KOH electrolytes at 70 °C. The improved performance can be attributed to the deposition of WO₃·2H₂O solid film on the surface of nickel electrode, which is beneficial to the increase in oxygen evolution overpotential, the slow-down of oxygen evolution rate and the decrease in charge-transfer resistance.

基于小型Zynq SoC硬件加速的改进TINY YOLO实时车辆检测算法实现

针对TINY YOLO车辆检测算法计算量过大，且在小型嵌入式系统中难以达到实时检测要求的问题。利用小型Zynq SoC系统的架构优势以及TINY YOLO的网络权值中存在大量接近零的权值参数这一特点，提出硬件并行加速的改进算法，称为浓缩小型深度网络（Xerantic-TINY YOLO，X-TINY YOLO）车辆检测算法。首先对TINY YOLO中网络结构进行压缩；其次采用高效多级流水线、流水线内全并行的方式对卷积计算部分进行算法加速；最后提出与网络结构相配合的数据切割和传输方案。实验结果表明，X-TINY YOLO仅消耗50%的片内硬件资源，可在相对于GPU和CPU性价比更高更适合嵌入式场景的Zynq SoC系统上实现，且其检测速度达到24帧/s，满足车辆检测的实时性要求。
