BACKGROUND: Serum creatinine has been reported in previous studies to be a prognostic indicator for overall mortality, in particular in a hypertensive population. METHODS: The Program on the Surgical Control of the Hyperlipidemias (POSCH) was a randomized, controlled clinical trial. All patients had survived a single myocardial infarction, were normotensive, were not obese, were not having heart failure, and were free of diabetes mellitus and renal disease at entry into the study. POSCH had followed its control group patients (N = 417) for a minimum of 7.0 years. In this group, a prospective post hoc analysis of the relationship of baseline serum creatinine with subsequent overall and atherosclerotic coronary heart disease mortality was performed. RESULTS: The baseline serum creatinine values in the control group patients ranged from 0.7 to 1.9 mg/dL (60 to 170 mumol/L), and were found to be independent predictors (P < .01) of both overall mortality and atherosclerotic coronary heart disease mortality. Each 0.1 mg/dL (9 mumol/L) increment in the baseline serum creatinine increased the relative risk for subsequent overall mortality by 36% and the relative risk for subsequent atherosclerotic coronary heart disease mortality by 47%. CONCLUSIONS: These results demonstrate that a serum creatinine value, obtained in normotensive, nonobese, normoglycemic survivors of a myocardial infarction without preexistent renal disease or heart failure, provides independent prognostic information regarding subsequent overall and atherosclerotic coronary heart disease mortality.  相似文献

Three- and 4-yr-old children were tested for comprehension of knowledge formation. In Exp 1, 34 Ss watched as a surprise was hidden under 1 of 4 obscured cups. The experimenter then pointed to the cup. All children searched under the correct cup, but no 3-yr-olds (in contrast to most 4-yr-olds) could explain how they knew where to look. Ss then discriminated between simultaneous pointing by 2 adults, one who had hidden a surprise and one who had left the room before the surprise was hidden. Most 4-yr-olds (but no 3-yr-olds) showed clear discrimination between the adults. In Exp 2, 16 Ss were tested with procedures designed to make the source of their own knowledge more obvious, but this had no effect on performance. It is concluded that studies using very similar procedures with chimpanzees and rhesus macaques were measuring an ability (or inability) to understand how knowledge states form. Studied memory for visuospatial arrays in 28 male and 34 female healthy dextral adults (aged 20–90 yrs). 10 abstract figures were presented in each hemispace over a series of learning trials, and then delayed free recall of figure placement was obtained. Figures were misplaced significantly downward and leftward in both hemispaces. Both vertical and horizontal absolute error increased significanty with age, but no age effects on directional errors were observed. The increase in absolute error over age is consistent with decreased anterograde memory and visuospatial skills in the elderly. The directional errors are believed to result from an attentional shift toward proximal peripersonal space, in combination with attentional shifts from differential left vs right cerebral activation. In general, calcification of biomaterials occurs through an interaction of host and implanted material factors, but up to now the real origin of pathologic calcification is unknown. In this study we aimed to investigate incidence of calcification of (crosslinked) dermal sheep collagens (DSCs) with respect to their specific properties, during subcutaneous implantation in rats. Three types of DSCs were commercially obtained: non-crosslinked DSC (NDSC), and DSC crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GDSC) and hexamethylenediisocyanate (HDSC). NDSC, HDSC and GDSC were (enzymatically) tissue culture pretreated to eliminate their cytotoxic products. Beside this, crosslinking methods were modified to optimize mechanical properties and to decrease cytotoxicity, which resulted in HDSC* and GDSC*. Furthermore, DSC was crosslinked by activation of the carboxylic groups, i.e. by means of acyl azide and carbodiimide, resulting in AaDSC and CDSC, respectively. After implantation of HDSCs and GDSCs a relation between cytotoxicity and calcification of crosslinked DSC could be made. No relation was found between cellular infiltration of DSCs and calcification. However, from the use of different types and modification of crosslinking methods it might be concluded that calcification is mainly related to stable crosslinks, i.e. to the chemical properties of the obtained material.  相似文献

Experiment 1 was to test effect of three ratios of energy to protein in complete mixed diets for 36 lactating cows in three, 28-d periods. Energy was varied with cottonseed hulls, pelleted ground corrugated boxes, and a mixture of the two. Crude protein was varied with soybean meal to give energy:crude protein of 5.7, 5.0, and 4.6 for each energy amount. Cottonseed meal was compared with soybean meal in corrugated box diets. Feed intake was much higher with cottonseed hulls, and appreciable feedlot bloat resulted from pelleted ground corrugated box diets. Data adjusted to equal feed intake showed significant effect of energy to crude protein ratio on milk yield and improved digestion of organic matter with soybean meal vs. cottonseed meal. Experiment 2 tested the hypothesis that lactating cows consuming high-protein alfalfa may benefit from supplemental protein. Diets were 50% forage. Six diets were 14 or 18% crude protein in three ratios of alfalfa hay to corn silage (0:100, 50:50, 100:0). Additional corn silage diets were to compare: 14 versus 18% protein from distiller's dried grains with solubles only and with .5 or .9% urea (four diets); two 14% protein diets compared .6% added potassium chloride with or without .5% urea. Thirty-six Holstein cows in early lactation received one of the 12 diets in each of three 28-d periods. Distiller's grains with solubles markedly depressed milk yield (2.2 kg/d) and milk protein (.22%); heat damage of distiller's grains was evident. Protein interacted with alfalfa so gain in milk from 18 versus 14% increased from .55 to 1.36 to 2.66 kg/d as alfalfa changed from 0 to 50 to 100%. Thus, crude protein of alfalfa was not as effective as that from soybean meal in supporting milk yield.  相似文献

The objective of this research is to investigate the feasibility of a theoretical development which could lead to advanced manipulator concepts offering fast dynamic and control features. Specifically, the application of “dynamic linearization” to a kinematically redundant planar manipulator is studied. In comparing such a manipulator with a standard non-linear, non-redundant design it is shown that in addition to the expected merits in linearity, dexterity, and computational simplicity, savings in actuator energy consumption can also be realized using a relative simple trajectory optimization scheme.  相似文献
