A new technique for on-line and off-line high speed computation

A novel technique for both online and offline computation is presented. With this technique, a reconstruction analysis in elementary particle physics, otherwise prohibitively long, has been accomplished. It will be used online in an upcoming Fermilab experiment to reconstruct more than 100000 events per second and to trigger on the basis of that information. The technique delivers 40 gigaoperations per second, has a bandwidth on the order of gigabytes per second, and has a modest cost. An overview of the program, details of the system, and performance measurements are presented     

The morphology of rigid-rod polymers and molecular composites resulting from coagulation processing

The effects of processing conditions on the morphology of molecular composite films are examined by optical and electron microscopy. During coagulation processing from solutions in methanesulfonic acid (MSA), rigid-rod polymer, such as poly(p-phenylenebenzobisoxazole) (PBO), phase separates into undesirable aggregates. The coagulant and the method of its introduction have been found to exert a strong impact on the final film morphology. A quench of a PBO solution in MSA into a water bath results in a three dimensional interconnected network of PBO, while a slower introduction of water results in a more amorphous material. A computer simulation program of the coagulation process has been developed to better understand the different structures emerging from coagulation processing of molecular composites. The simulation results are in qualitative agreement with the experimental observations.     

Construction Productivity Improvement

Construction productivity has been on the decline in the last decade. The results are presented on a survey of the Engineering News‐Record 400 largest contractors to obtain their views on where productivity improvements would most help and to compare the trends with a similar survey carried out in 1979. Data were collected on the general company characteristics of the responding contractors, and on the contractors' opinions on potential areas for productivity improvement in the office and in the field. Findings indicate that immediate research should concentrate on improving marketing practices, planning and scheduling, labor‐management relations, site supervision, industrialized building systems, equipment policy and engineering design; and that governmental regulations have lost the immediate urgency attached to them in 1979.It is also recommended that similar surveys be conducted every 3 to 4 years to identify new trends and to steer research in the appropriate direction.     

Comments on the Grusec and Goodnow (1994) model of the role of discipline in moral internalization.

J. E. Grusec and J. J. Goodnow (see record 1994-25033-001) provided a compelling framework for organizing parameters of disciplinary encounters found to affect moral internalization. However, their central hypothesis (that cognitions of accurate perception and acceptance of the message mediate the impact of specific tactics on internalization) remains untested. Before embarking on research programs designed to reveal the determinants of acceptance of parental messages in the hope that such research will inform our understanding of internalization, researchers would be well advised to devise conceptually sound measures of message acceptance and to show that message acceptance does indeed mediate internalization.
