Book Reviews: Test Tutorials in Book Form

This is a review of Advances in Electronic Testing: Challenges and Methodologies (edited by Dimitris Gizopoulos), which is part of a series called Frontiers in Electronic Testing. This book can be thought of as a set of advanced tutorials in book form. One of the best things about this book is that several chapters go beyond the what of the subject and into the why. The book is also well integrated, with pointers to other chapters when necessary and with a minimum overlap between chapters.     

Efficient design of oversampled NPR GDFT filterbanks

We propose a flexible, efficient design technique for the prototype filter of an oversampled near perfect reconstruction (NPR) generalized discrete Fourier transform (GDFT) filterbank. Such filterbanks have several desirable properties for subband processing systems that are sensitive to aliasing, such as subband adaptive filters. The design criteria for the prototype filter are explicit bounds (derived herein) on the aliased components in the subbands and the output, the distortion induced by the filterbank, and the imaged subband errors in the output. It is shown that the design of an optimal prototype filter can be transformed into a convex optimization problem, which can be efficiently solved. The proposed design technique provides an efficient and effective tool for exploring many of the inherent tradeoffs in the design of the prototype filter, including the tradeoff between aliasing in the subbands and the distortion induced by the filterbank. We calculate several examples of these tradeoffs and demonstrate that the proposed method can generate filters with significantly better performance than filters obtained using current design methods.     

Electrical characterization and modeling of alternating-currentthin-film electroluminescent devices

Electrical characterization of evaporated ZnS:Mn alternating-current thin-film electroluminescent (ACTFEL) devices is accomplished by capacitance-voltage (C-V) analysis. Interpretation of these C-V characteristics is aided by SPICE modeling and by electrical characterization of an ideal ACTFEL device constructed from discrete components, based on a simple equivalent circuit for the ACTFEL device. Various features of the C -V curve are ascribed to equivalent circuit parameters and associated device physics parameters     

Continuity and change: past experience as adaptive repertoire in occupational adaptation

Narratives are gaining recognition as important ways occupational therapists and other clinicians can think about the life stories of clients. The purpose of this article is to examine a conceptualization of how changes from one chapter to another occur in life stories, using the metaphor of an adaptive repertoire, and to consider how this notion can be useful in helping clients maintain continuity and a coherent life story in times of change. Three premises based on the concept of adaptation address (a) configurations of occupational forms embedded in particular local worlds, (b) cumulative development of an adaptive repertoire that allows one to perform both competently and appropriately, and (c) adaptive transitions and application of one's repertoire to new circumstances. Implications for research and clinical practice in occupational therapy also are examined.     

Individual differences in anterior brain asymmetry and fundamental dimensions of emotion.

Assessed whether individual differences in anterior brain asymmetry are linked to differences in basic dimensions of emotion. In each of 2 experimental sessions, separated by 3 wks, resting EEG activity was recorded from female adults during 8 60-sec baselines. Mean alpha power asymmetry across both sessions was extracted in mid-frontal and anterior temporal sites. Across both regions, groups demonstrating stable and extreme relative left anterior activation reported increased generalized positive affect (PAF) and decreased generalized negative affect (NAF) compared with groups demonstrating stable and extreme relative right anterior activation. Additional correlational analyses revealed robust relations between anterior asymmetry and PAF and NAF, particularly among Ss who demonstrated stable patterns of EEG activation over time. Electroencephalogram asymmetry in response to the approach of a stranger and maternal separation in 10-month-old infants.

We recently reported the presence of reliable asymmetries in frontal-brain electrical activity in infants that distinguished between certain positive- and negative-affect elicitors. In order to explore the degree to which these asymmetries in brain activity are associated with individual differences in affective response, 35 ten-month-old female infants were presented with a stranger-approach, mother-approach, and maternal-separation experience while an electroencephalogram (EEG) from the left- and right-frontal and left- and right-parietal scalp regions was recorded and facial and other behavioral responses were videotaped. Changes in frontal-EEG asymmetry reflected behavioral changes between conditions. In addition, individual differences in affective response to separation were related to differences in frontal-brain asymmetries. These findings indicate that lawful changes exist in asymmetries of frontal-brain activation during the expression of certain emotions in the first year of life and that individual differences in emotional responsivity are related to these measures of brain activity. Frontal brain activation in repressors and nonrepressors.

Assessed whether resting anterior asymmetry would discriminate individual differences in repressive-defensive coping styles. In 2 sessions, resting electroencephalogram was recorded from female adults during 8 60-sec baselines. Ss were classified as repressors or nonrepressors on the basis of scores on the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (MC), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). In midfrontal and lateral frontal sites, repressors demonstrated relative left hemisphere activation when compared with other groups. The MC, but not the STAI or the BDI, contributed unique variance to frontal asymmetry. Relative left frontal activation may be linked to a self-enhancing regulatory style that promotes lowered risk for psychopathology. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)
