Models of high velocity impact phenomena

Models of craters formed by impacts at velocities of up to 24.5 km/sec have been computed using the Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics, MESA, EPIC and CALE codes. These modeling efforts are compared to data obtained from the Hypervelocity Microparticle Impact project at Los Alamos using the van de Graaff accelerator. A factor of 5 increase in yield strength was needed to account for high strain rate effects and to match the data. Structure in the data is addressed by using crater volume instead of crater diameter cubed. Detailed code comparisons were made between the four codes with good agreement found.     

A Multinational Survey of the Quality of Carbamazepine Tablets

The results of a multinational survey of the quality of carbamazepine tablets are reported. A total of 22 laboratories in nineteen countries worldwide participated in the study conducted under the auspices of the Official Laboratories and Medicines Control Services (OLMCS) Section of FIP. The results of tests conducted on 86 samples representing at least 34 different products, comprising the innovator's product Tegretol, 13 other branded products and 20 generic products, are presented. Most products fulfilled the requirements of pharmacopoeial quality standards. However, there were marked differences in dissolution behaviour which suggest that not all products are bioequivalent with each other. Most of the products tested would not comply with a requirement for the percentage of carbamazepine released at 15 minutes, that is proposed for inclusion in the USP monograph for Carbamazepine Tablets.     

Depressive symptoms erode self-esteem in severe mental illness: A three-wave, cross-lagged study.

Vulnerability, scar, and reciprocal-relations models of depressive symptoms and self-esteem were compared among people with severe mental illness (SMI; N=260) participating in a partnership-based intervention study. Assessments were conducted at baseline, midway through the intervention (after 4 months), and at termination (after 9 months). Cross-lagged, structural equation modeling analyses revealed that participants' baseline depressive symptoms predicted a decrease in self-esteem in the first 4 months but not in the subsequent 5 months of participation. Exploratory regression analyses indicated that improved social functioning buffered this deleterious effect of depressive symptoms. These findings, which are consistent with the scar model, highlight the fragile nature of the self and the importance of social functioning in recovery from SMI. Ceramic-matrix composites fatigue and fracture

Fiber-reinforced ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs) have been shown to exhibit excellent high-temperature properties. There are some published data on the mechanical properties of Nicalon fiber-reinforced composites with various matrices, but much of the work was performed in bending, and there is little information on the failure modes in textile-reinforced CMCs, especially under cyclic-loading conditions. This article is an interim report on research that examines the tensile deformation, fracture, smoothbar fatigue, and fatigue crack-growth behavior of several CMCs. Unidirectional, two-dimensional eight-harness satin weave, and three-dimensional angle-interlock weave Nicalon fiber architectures infiltrated with polymers and then pyrolized were investigated and are compared with similar experiments on Nicalon-reinforced calcium-silicate glass-ceramic-matrix composites.     

Behavioral factors affecting exposure potential for household cleaning products

Variation in repeated nucleotide sequences (RNSs) at the level of entire families assayed by Southern blot hybridization is remarkably low within species and is a powerful tool for scrutinizing the origin of allopolyploid taxa. Thirty-one clones from RNSs isolated from different Triticeae genera were used to investigate the genome constitution of South American Elymus. One of these clones, pHch2, preferentially hybridized with the diploid H genome Hordeum species. Hybridization of this clone with a worldwide collection of Elymus species with known genome formulas showed that pHch2 clearly discriminates Elymus species with the H genome (StH, StHH, StStH, and StHY) from those with other genome combinations (StY, StStY, StPY, and StP). Hybridization with pHch2 indicates the presence of the H genome in all South American Elymus species except Elymus erianthus and Elymus mendocinus. Hybridization with additional clones that revealed differential restriction fragments (marker bands) for the H genome confirmed the absence of the H genome in these species. Differential restriction fragments for the Ns genome of Psathyrostachys were detected in E. erianthus and E. mendocinus and three species of Leymus. Based on genome constitution, morphology, and habitat, E. erianthus and E. mendocinus were transferred to the genus Leymus.     

A novel mutation of presenilin 1 in familial Alzheimer's disease in Israel detected by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis

Germline mutations in the presenilin 1 (PS1) gene apparently account for the majority of early-onset, familial Alzheimer's disease (AD). Using a mutation-screening strategy (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis; DGGE), we analyzed a large family with early onset AD and seizures. The patients in this family showed a novel missense mutation in exon 5 of the PS1 gene (A to T change in codon 120, altering glutamine to aspartic acid). This novel mutation is located within the second hydrophilic domain of the molecule, a region not particularly involved in previously described germline mutations, and is of unknown biological significance. These results also demonstrate that DGGE can be used effectively to screen for mutations within this gene.     

Turbulence in the freeboard of a gas-fluidised bed: The significance of ghost bubbles

The turbulence in the upward gas flow above a gas-fluidised bed was measured by hot wire anemometry. In this region above the bed—defined as the free is the fluidising velocity. The irregularity of the motion is caused by bursting bubbles at the surface of the bed. It appears that the gas within a bu are termed “ghost bubbles”.Ghost bubble mechanics were studied by releasing single bubbles from: (i) stagnant liquid; and (ii) an incipiently fluidised bed. Tle velocity field wa The velocity of a ghost bubble diminishes as it rises, due to fluid entrainment caused by turbulent circulatory flow within the bubble.From the freeboard turbulence measurements for a continuously bubbling fluidised bed, it is clear that the turbulence is due to ghost bubbles, but the ghost bubble.     

Scaling laws and polystyrene networks: a quasi-elastic light scattering study

Randomly crosslinked networks with a range of crosslink densities were prepared by γ-irradiation. Quasielastic light scattering measurements were made on the gels swollen to equilibrium in cyclohexane at 308, 318 and 333 K. The longitudinal osmotic modulus M_os was obtained from the intensity of the dynamically scattered light, and the cooperative diffusion coefficient D_c calculated from the relaxation rate of the autocorrelation function. The concentration dependence of these parameters at the theta temperature was found to be consistent with the scaling predictions, but at higher temperatures where excluded volume conditions prevail, deviations from scaling behaviour were observed. These discrepancies are probably caused by defects in the network structure.     

Effects of dietary fiber in Vervet monkeys fed “Western” diets

Male Vervet monkeys (7/treatment) were fed a “Western” diet containing 46.2% calories as fat, 39.8% as carbohydrate and 14.0% as protein. The diet was augmented with 10% cellulose or 10% pectin. A third (control) group of seven monkeys was fed a commercial ration augmented with fruit and bread. After 34 weeks, serum cholesterol levels were elevated significantly in the two test groups compared with the controls but there was no difference between the two fiber-fed groups. Serum triglycerides were unaffected. Liver cholesterol levels were the same in all three groups but liver triglyceride levels were lower in the monkeys fed cellulose. Biliary lipids were similar in all three groups as were the calculated lithogenic indices. The average aortic sudanophilia (percent of total area) in the three groups was cellulose, 10.6±2.5; pectin, 8.1±2.5; and control, 1.1±0.4. One animal in each of the groups fed “Western” diet exhibited an atherosclerotic plaque. The results indicate that there is no difference between pectin and cellulose with regard to their effects on either lipidemia or aortic sudanophilia in Vervet monkeys fed a Western-type diet.
