The variation of gain with wavelength of a 1.5 ?m semiconductor-laser amplifier with antireflection-coated facets has been measured over several modes. The internal gain and resonant wavelength were found using a curve- fitting technique and the dependence of these quantities on bias current and signal power was investigated.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To quantify vascular smooth muscle polyploidy and growth kinetics in aortic cells from stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP) and from normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats, and to examine the effects of treatment with the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor perindopril on these parameters. DESIGN: The following experimental groups were used: young (age < 20 weeks) and old (age > 20 weeks) untreated WKY rats and untreated SHRSP; SHRSP treated with perindopril, and age- and sex-matched control SHRSP; and SHRSP treated with hydralazine and hydrochlorothiazide and age- and sex-matched control SHRSP. The effects of treatment of the SHRSP with perindopril for 30 days on vascular smooth muscle polyploidy and growth kinetics were measured and compared with the effects of equivalent antihypertensive doses of hydralazine and hydrochlorothiazide. METHODS: Vascular smooth muscle polyploidy was measured using flow-cytometry DNA analysis of freshly harvested cells. Growth curves were performed on cultured aortic cells. Plasma renin activity was measured by an antibody-trapping method, plasma angiotensin II (Ang II) by radioimmunoassay and plasma ACE activity by a colorimetric method. Cardiac hypertrophy was evaluated by measuring the heart weight:body weight and left ventricle + septum weight:body weight ratios. RESULTS: The SHRSP had markedly and significantly elevated G2 + M phase of the cell cycle. Treatment with perindopril resulted in a significant reduction in polyploidy in the SHRSP, whereas treatment with hydralazine and hydrochlorothiazide had no effect on the percentage of cells in the G2 + M phase of the cell cycle. The regression of polyploidy after treatment with perindopril was associated with a significant reduction in the concentration of Ang II and ACE activity, and with a significant regression of cardiac hypertrophy. Increased mitogenesis of cultured vascular smooth muscle cells from the SHRSP was not altered by treatment with perindopril. CONCLUSIONS: ACE inhibition reduces vascular smooth muscle polyploidy in large conduit arteries. This type of vascular protection is mediated by the reduced Ang II and possibly by increased kinins level, rather than by the hypotensive effect alone.  相似文献

Open-ended, multi-wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with magnetic nanoparticles encapsulated within their graphitic walls (magCNTs) were fabricated by a combined action of templated growth and a ferrofluid catalyst/carbon precursor, and tested as drug hosts. The hybrid nanotubes are stable under extreme pH conditions due to particle protection provided by the graphitic shell. The magCNTs are promising for high capacity drug loading given that the magnetic functionalization did not block any of the active sites available for drug attachment, either from the CNT internal void or on the internal and external surfaces. This is in contrast to typical approaches of loading CNTs with particles that proceed through surface attachment or capillary filling of the tube interior. Additionally, the CNTs exhibit enhanced hydrophilic character, as shown by water adsorption measurements, which make them suitable for biological applications. The morphological and structural characteristics of the hybrid CNTs are evaluated in conjunction to their magnetic properties and ability for drug loading (diaminophenothiazine). The fact that the magnetic functionality is provided from 'inside the walls' can allow for multimode functionalization of the graphitic surfaces and makes the magCNTs promising for targeted therapeutic applications.  相似文献

As a contribution to the EEC study of the potential contribution of electric and electromagnetic techniques to geothermal exploration, magnetotelluric studies have been undertaken with a sounding bandwidth ranging from 2 to 7 decades of period at more than 30 sites within the chosen test area of Travale. This area must be one of the most unfavourable for the application of electrical techniques on account both of the thickness (up to 2 km) of conducting (< 1 ohm · m in some locations) cover formations and of the intensity of the artificial disturbances from local power stations and distribution lines. Nevertheless it has been possible to obtain good quality data over part of the sounding band employing an automatic in-field analysis system and rigorous data analysis and to penetrate to reservoir depths at the centre of the graben by undertaking broadband soundings (up to 10' s) at some sites. For interpretation of the data for periods up to about 100 s, 2-D modelling is both satisfactory and essential (1-D modelling provides correct layer resistivities but underestimates interface depths) and good agreement has been obtained for an electrical structure model and the relevant geological section. The 2-D models, which best fit the long period data, are characterised both by zones of highly conducting flysch cover formations and by an anomalously conducting basement. Restriction of the study to a test area within the Travate graben inhibits the unequivocal association of these conducting zones with the thermal anomaly.  相似文献

BH laser devices with efficient optical and current confinement have been grown using a new all-MOVPE growth technique. The devices produced operated with CW threshold currents as low as 14 mA and output powers of up to 28 mW at 20°C. In initial experiments, over 70% of the working devices tested had threshold currents of less than 30 mA, substantiating the view that MOVPE is a highly promising technique for the large-scale production of complex optoelectronic devices.  相似文献

Broadband operation of GRIN-SC-MQW BH amplifiers is reported with 115 mW output power at 1.54 mu m and 3 dB gain compression. Gain is flat to 0.7 dB over the range 1.42-1.55 mu m. Polarisation sensitivity reduces from 4.5 dB at 1.55 mu m to 1.4 dB at 1.415 mu m.<>  相似文献

Increased osteoclast activity is responsible for the enhanced bone destruction in postmenopausal osteoporosis, Paget's disease, bone metastasis, and hypercalcemia of malignancy. However, the number of known inhibitory factors that block osteoclast formation and bone resorption are limited. Therefore, we used an expression-cloning approach to identify novel factors produced by osteoclasts that inhibit osteoclast activity. A candidate clone was identified and isolated from a human osteoclast-like multinucleated cell (MNC) cDNA library, named osteoclast inhibitory peptide-1 (OIP-1), and the cDNA sequence was determined. This sequence matched that of the recently identified human stem cell antigen, was structurally similar to the mouse Ly-6 gene family, and the sequence predicted it was a glycosyl phosphatidyl inositol (GPI)-anchored protein that had a cleavable COOH-terminal peptide. Western blot analysis of conditioned media from 293 cells transfected with the OIP-1 cDNA clone confirmed that OIP-1 was released into the media as a membrane-bound GPI-linked protein. Interestingly, both recombinant OIP-1 expressed in Escherichia coli (which does not have GPI linker) and OIP-1 expressed by mammalian cells significantly reduced osteoclast-like MNC formation induced by 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 or PTH-related protein in mouse and human bone marrow cultures, and inhibited 45Ca release from prelabeled bone in fetal rat organ cultures. In contrast, recombinant OIP-1 did not inhibit the growth of a variety of other cell types. These data indicate that OIP-1 is a novel, specific inhibitor of osteoclast formation and bone resorption.  相似文献

We have reported previously that serotonin (5-HT) stimulates the mitogenesis of bovine pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (SMCs) through active transport of 5-HT and cellular signaling that includes elevation of superoxide (O2.-) and enhancement of protein tyrosine phosphorylation. Ginkgo biloba extract 501 (EGb 501), which has been demonstrated to act as an antioxidant, was found to block both the elevated O2.- and the proliferative and hypertrophic influences of 5-HT on SMCs, but not to directly inhibit the associated activation of NAD(P)H oxidase or the stimulation of phosphorylation of GTPase-activating protein (GAP). A similar effect of Ginkgo biloba extract 501 occurred on Chinese hamster lung fibroblasts (CCL-39), where 5-HT receptor, as opposed to transporter, action has been associated with mitogenesis. We conclude from these studies that Ginkgo biloba extract 501 quenches O2.- formation by 5-HT, thereby blocking its mitogenic effect. Stimulation of protein tyrosine phosphorylation of GAP by 5-HT appears to precede the elevation of O2.-.  相似文献
