The human subject in psychological research.

Examines the human S in terms of his changing role in the historical development of psychology, his image and task performance in contemporary psychology, and limitations and weaknesses of his present function. The discussion covers the bias in S selection, preconceptions and suspicions of Ss entering the laboratory, distorted performance in the experimental task, and ethical implications of psychological research. It is suggested that psychology's image of the S as a stimulus-response machine is inadequate and that many studies are based on data supplied by Ss who are neither randomly selected nor assigned, nor representative of the general population, nor naive, and who are suspicious and distrustful of psychological research and researchers. Starch graft polymers. I. Graft Co- and terpolymers of starch with 2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxypropyl-trimethylammonium chloride and acrylamide: Preparation and evaluation as silica depressants

The title monomers have been grafted onto wheat starch by γ-radiation-induced polymerization in water providing three graft polymers containing poly[2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride (I)] and two graft polymers containing poly[I and acrylamide (II)]. Characterization is discussed together with their utility as silica depressants in flotation-beneficiation of siliceous ores. Results are provided to illustrate that a starch graft copolymer containing 15% poly(I) graft and a graft terpolymer containing 30% poly(I, II) in the ratio 1:2 are effective as selective depressants for silica in flotation-beneficiation of Florida pebble phosphate ore using special flotation conditions.

Anionic polymerization of styrene: Integration with styrene monomer production

Anionic polymerization and ethylbenzene dehydrogenation were carried out in the laboratory using continuous reactor designs and conditions typical of current commerical processes. The dehydrogenator was operated at 43–55% conversion with continuous distillation of the ethylbenzene/styrene mixture to remove byproducts that would interfere with the subsequent anionic polymerization. The anionic polymerization was carried out using a reactor of the CSTR type which operated at > 99% conversion of styrene. The volatiles were recovered from the polymer syrup and recycled back to the dehydrogenator. During 4 months of continuous operation the integrated process showed no detrimental buildup of impurities which affected the anionic polymerization or dehydrogenation. The polystyrene produced had excellent color, clarity, thermal stability, and polydispersity (M_w/M_n = 2.1–2.4). The ability to control weight average molecular weight was within a range of 20,000 using an on-line GPC in concert with a colorimeter.     

Interaction of slip‐ and flame‐spray coated carbon‐bonded alumina filters with steel melts

Ceramic foam filters play an essential role in the quest for cleanliness of cast steel parts as they facilitate turbulence reduction during mold filling as well as removal of nonmetallic inclusions. A coating on these filters is able to increase their strength and filtration efficiency by improving the adhesion of inclusions to the filter strands. In this study, Al₂O₃‐C filters were coated with an alumina slip via slip and flame spraying. The phase composition and the microstructure of the coatings were investigated before and after immersion into molten steel contained in a metal casting simulator. After contact with molten steel, Al₂O₃‐C reference filter shows intense decarburization which often influence the quality of cast steel parts due to formation of gas bubbles. Slip‐sprayed alumina coatings on such a filter promote the deposition of inclusions due to formation of a vitreous alumina layer but will also cause gas bubble formation as they exhibit a high porosity. Flame‐spray coatings have low porosity and hence, prevent formation of gas bubbles. Furthermore, they showed the highest reactivity toward the steel melt and hence, are recommended for filtration of cast products with a high demand on cleanliness.     

The Radiation Chemistry of the Cs-7SB Modifier used in Cs and Sr Solvent Extraction

Abstract

The compound 1-(2,2,3,3,-tetrafluoropropoxy)-3-(4-sec-butylphenoxy)-2-propanol, also called Cs-7SB, is used as a solvent modifier in formulations containing calixarenes and crown ethers for cesium and strontium extraction from nuclear waste solutions. The compound solvates complexes of both metals and decreases in its concentration result in lowered extraction efficiency for both. The use of Cs-7SB in nuclear-solvent extraction ensures that it will be exposed to high-radiation doses, and thus its radiation-chemical robustness is a matter of interest in the design of extraction systems employing it. The behavior of the compound in irradiated solution, both in the presence and absence of a nitric acid aqueous phase was investigated here using steady state- and pulsed-radiolysis techniques. The rate constants for the aqueous reactions of Cs-7SB with ^?H, ^?OH, ^?NO₃, and ^?NO₂ radicals are reported. UPLC-UV-MS results were used to identify major products of the radiolysis of Cs-7SB in contact with nitric acid, and revealed the production of hydroxylated nitro-derivatives. Reaction mechanisms are proposed and it was concluded that the aryl-ether configuration of this molecule makes it especially susceptible to nitration in the presence of radiolytically-produced nitrous acid. Fluoride yields are also given under various conditions.     

To M-Pay or not to M-Pay—Realising the potential of smart phones: conceptual modeling and empirical validation

The variety of products and services available through Smart Phones is predicted to increase significantly over the coming years as the commercial potential of Smart Phones for M-Commerce is widely acknowledged. In fact, it is predicted that M-Commerce will achieve in the next three to four years, what E-Commerce has achieved in the last fifteen years. However, while Smart Phones present significant opportunities for organisations, the M-Commerce channel is entirely contingent on consumers?? willingness to not only use these devices to engage in transactional tasks such as bookings, ticketing, and accessing information on products and services, but rather to actually make an M-Payment using the Smart Phone, and as such complete the M-Commerce transactional loop. Hence, M-Payments are a critical enabler of the true commercial value of the Smart Phone. Thus, gaining an understanding of consumers?? perceptions of using Smart Phones to make M-Payments is essential for theoretical explorations of the M-Payment phenomena, and in the practical implementation of M-Commerce services. This paper makes a number of contributions which are relevant to both academics and practitioners. The paper develops and empirically validates a conceptual model for exploring the impact of Vendor and Mechanism Trust on consumers?? willingness to use Smart Phones to make M-Payments for both Push and Pull based products. The empirical findings of the developed Partial Least Squares model illustrate that a pull-based model (where consumers have high levels of control over the transaction process) is the model consumers are most likely to adopt, and most likely to use to make M-Payments. To realise the M-Payments vision, vendors need to clearly communicate to consumers how their data is secured and privacy protected. Furthermore, the findings illustrate the critical importance of ensuring that adequate legislation is in place pertaining to the protection of consumers, and that such legislation is communicated to consumers to maximise their willingness to make M-Payments.
