Low-Temperature Chemical Vapor Deposition Tungsten Carbide Coatings for Wear/Erosion Resistance

A new chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process has been developed to deposit hard coatings, containing tungsten carbide, at temperatures below 500°C. These coatings, which have been applied to both ferrous and nonferrous alloys, exhibit excellent resistance to wear and erosion. The coatings comprise a mixture of tungsten and the tungsten carbide, the latter being present as W₂C, W₂C + W₃C, or W₃C. The coatings' composition and properties can be controlled by varying the CVD process parameters. The unique lamellar, fine-grained microstructures of these coatings contribute to their good tribological properties.     

A caustic corrected UTD solution for the fields radiated by asource on a flat plate with a curved edge

Corrections to the uniform geometrical theory of diffraction (UTD) that account for the caustics caused by the coalescence of the diffraction points on a curved edge are derived. This creates a new curvature dependent diffraction coefficient that has not been previously accounted for in the UTD. The far-zone radiation by a short monopole mounted on an elliptic disk is analyzed using this caustic corrected UTD solution. Theoretical results are verified in the principal plane by comparison with a method of moments solution. The resulting solution for the radiated field is accurate and provides useful insight into the scattering phenomena. This insight is necessary in order to obtain more general solutions     

Flexible correction processes in social judgment: The role of naive theories in corrections for perceived bias.

Unlike many models of bias correction, the flexible correction model posits that corrections occur when judges are motivated and able to adjust assessments of targets according to their naive theories of how the context affects judgments of the target(s). In the current research, people flexibly correct assessments of different targets within the same context according to the differing theories associated with the context-target pairs. In Study 1, shared theories of assimilation and contrast bias are identified. Corrections consistent with those theories are obtained in Studies 2 and 3. Study 4 shows that idiographic measures of theories of bias predict the direction and magnitude of corrections. Career counseling as a mental health intervention.

Discusses career counseling aimed at work adjustment or job change as a potential intervention for many individuals suffering from job stress and argues that, in certain instances, career counseling should be used instead of traditional psychotherapy and/or as an alternative to stress management. Assessment strategies for determining the appropriate intervention for individuals suffering from job stress are generated from work adjustment theory. Application of thermal infrared imagery to canal leakage detection

The North Unit Irrigation District of central Oregon is an area of limited water availability. Because of the limited water resource, close monitoring of water conveyance, application, and drainage are required. An HRB Singer AN/AAS 14 optical-electronic thermal infrared scanning system was used to test its utility for monitoring one aspect of the water management scheme, the conveyance or canal system. Thermal infrared imagery, sensed in the 8–14 μm portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, was found to be an economical and practical method of detecting conveyance system leakage sites.     

Favorable self-perception, perceived supervisory style, and job satisfaction.

Compared interrelationships of favorable self-perception as measured by biographical data, perceived supervisory style of the boss, and job satisfaction of 128 administrators and professional employees of a state department of public instruction. All ss were given the administrative attitude questionnaire and the biographical information blank. Data indicate that ss with a high level of favorable self-perception were less likely to perceive the supervisory style of their boss as supportive and reported lower levels of job satisfaction than those with a low level of favorable self-perception. More supportive styles of supervision were found to be associated with higher levels of job satisfaction, although the effect was moderated by favorable self-perception. Time, awareness, and order of presentation in opinion change.

Primacy-recency was investigated as a function of time interval interpolated between the presentation of the opposing arguments and of the level of awareness of the manipulatory intent of the experimenter. Utilizing the pretest—experimental treatment—posttest design, 210 Ss were made differentially aware of the manipulatory intent of the experimenter. Half of the Ss were read the opposing arguments in immediate succession while the other half had a 2-week time interval interpolated between the argument presentations. Results indicated that those Ss who were unaware of manipulatory intent yielded a significant recency effect. Spontaneous alternation behavior in humans: Implications for psychological research.

It is suggested that 1 response-influencing variable in psychological experiments may be the individual S's need for sensory variation as manifested in alternation behavior. The proposition is put forth that in an experimental situation where a discriminatory response to one of a series of successively presented stimuli is required, the organism will seek to optimize the amount of stimulus variability or complexity by alternation behavior.
