Dairy cows are culled from the herd for a variety of reasons, the most common being fertility problems, low milk production, or udder problems. Disease and injury can contribute to the decision to cull either directly, or indirectly, by causing fertility or production problems, leading to culling. Disease or injury may also affect the cow's ability to handle the stress of transportation and may increase the risk for reduced welfare. The purpose of this study was to determine the general condition of culled dairy cows sold at Ontario auction markets, to quantify the frequency of culled cows in poor condition sold at these auctions, and to determine how this relates to the sale price of the cow. Data were collected on 4,460 culled dairy cows, sold at 3 Ontario auction markets, over a continuous 16-wk study period. Observers assessed the general condition of dairy cows entering the sales ring by recording each individual cow's hock injury score, body condition score (BCS), gait score, and tail score, in accordance with 2017 Canadian proAction Animal Care guidelines. Each cow's body weight, breed, and sale price were also recorded. Results showed that 27.2% of culled cows scored had unacceptable hock injuries, 40.5% had a BCS ≤2, 72.7% had an abnormal gait, and 12.5% had docked tails. Culled cows with a BCS ≤2 sold for $0.20 less/kg compared with those with a BCS >2, which equated to an overall average loss of $117 per cow. Cows with an abnormal gait sold for $0.05 less/kg compared with culled cows with a normal gait, which equated to an overall average loss of $32.45 per cow. There was no difference in the sale price depending on hock injury score or the presence or absence of a full tail. The main issues identified in this study were the high prevalence of low body condition and abnormal gait, indicating that the welfare of these cows may be at risk. Additionally, cows with low BCS or abnormal gait sold for a lower price compared with cows that were in good condition, leading to reduced potential profit for the producer.  相似文献

The objective of this prospective single cohort study was to determine the effect of health status at arrival on growth in milk-fed veal calves. Upon arrival at the veal facility, calves were evaluated using a standardized health scoring system and weighed, and the supplier of the calf was recorded. The calves were followed until slaughter, when the hot carcass weight (HCW) was reported. To calculate average daily gain (ADG), the HCW was transformed into an estimated live weight, weight at arrival was subtracted, and this value was divided by the number of days on feed. A mixed linear regression model was created to evaluate the association of health status on arrival with the ADG throughout the production period. A total of 4,825 calves were evaluated at arrival; however, due to inconsistent HCW data from one slaughter plant, and 357 calves dying during the production period, 2,283 calves were used for analysis. In the final model, 7 variables were significantly associated with ADG. Housing location within the farm, method of calf procurement (drover or auction-derived calves versus direct delivery from local farms) and having a higher body weight at arrival were associated with a higher ADG. The season of arrival (summer or fall compared with winter) and being dehydrated at arrival were associated with a lower ADG. Days on feed was also significant in the multivariable model and had a quadratic relationship with ADG. The associations identified suggest that there may be value in scoring dehydration and body weight at arrival to a veal facility.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of reducing the particle size of wheat straw in a total mixed ration (TMR) on cow behavior, health, and production in early lactation. For 28 d after calving, 41 multiparous Holstein cows were individually provided either 1 of 2 TMR with 9% wheat straw (dry matter basis) chopped (1) using a 2.54-cm screen (short; n = 21) or (2) using a 5.08-cm screen (long; n = 20). Cows were housed in freestall pens during both the dry and lactating period. Enrollment in the trial was on a rolling basis and cows were evenly distributed by parity and milk production between treatments. Wireless telemetry boluses were used to measure reticulorumen pH. Automated systems recorded TMR dry matter intake, milk yield, and rumination activity. The TMR and orts samples were collected every 3 d to determine feed sorting. A particle separator was used to separate feed samples into 4 fractions: long (>19 mm), medium (<19 mm, >8 mm), short (<8 mm, >4 mm), and fine (<4 mm) particles. Feed sorting was calculated as actual intake of each particle fraction expressed as a percentage of its predicted intake. Cows sorted the longest TMR particles differently by treatment; on the long treatment cows sorted against long particles (94.2 ± 1.9%), whereas on the short treatment cows did not sort for or against these particles (99.7 ± 1.9%). Data were analyzed in mixed-effect linear regression models and fitted with polynomial functions over the 28 d of observations. The fitted data indicated treatment differences in linear coefficients, quadratic coefficients, and cubic coefficients for mean time (min/d) below a reticulorumen pH of 5.8 and milk yield. Rumination time (min/d) differed between treatments for quadratic and cubic coefficients. Cows on the short treatment linearly increased in dry matter intake at a greater rate than cows on the long treatment. Mean reticulorumen pH decreased at a greater rate for cows on the long treatment than for cows on the short, as indicated by differences between linear coefficients. Cows on the short treatment tended to produce 75 kg more milk cumulatively during the first 28 d in milk than cows on long treatment. These results suggest that cows fed a diet with longer straw particles selected against physically effective fiber, which may have contributed to greater fluctuations in rumination time, reticulorumen pH, dry matter intake, and milk production in early lactation.  相似文献

Caustic paste disbudding is becoming more commonplace in North America. A large body of work has examined pain control for cautery disbudding and surgical dehorning, but fewer studies have evaluated pain control for caustic paste disbudding, and results conflict regarding benefits of local anesthesia. In humans, the pain associated with a caustic, chemical burn can differ in nature, duration, and intensity compared with a thermal burn. The objective of this clinical trial was to evaluate the effects of either a lidocaine cornual nerve block or a topical anesthetic incorporated into caustic paste on the acute pain of caustic paste disbudding. Seventy-two Holstein-Friesian calves housed in groups with an automated milk feeder were enrolled into 18 replicates balanced on age and assigned to 1 of 4 treatments: sham (S), placebo paste and a saline cornual block; topical (T), a novel caustic paste containing lidocaine and prilocaine, and a saline cornual block; cornual block (B), commercial caustic paste and a lidocaine cornual nerve block; and positive (P), commercial caustic paste and a saline cornual block. All calves received 0.5 mg/kg of meloxicam SC at the time of the block. Researchers were blinded to treatment group. Primary outcomes were validated pain behavior responses and pain sensitivity measured by algometry. Secondary outcomes consisted of respiratory and heart rate, latency to approach the evaluator, play behavior, feeding behavior, and standing and lying bout characteristics. Data were analyzed using linear, Poisson, and negative binomial regression models. Cornual-blocked calves had less pain sensitivity to 180 min after disbudding than all other groups; T and P calves had more pain sensitivity than S calves for the same time period. Compared with T and P calves, B and S calves had fewer pain behaviors until 120 min postdisbudding, decreased respiratory and heart rates, and a shorter latency to feed. The S calves exhibited more play behavior than other groups. Caustic paste appears to be acutely painful for at least 180 min, and this is reduced by a cornual nerve block but not by our novel paste. Because caustic paste may result in a different pain experience than cautery, use of a variety of metrics assessing affective state, physiologic responses, and normal behaviors, such as feeding and lying, should be included into future trials to help assess the welfare of calves disbudded by this method. We recommend that calves disbudded with caustic paste receive local anesthetic with a cornual nerve block as well as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug to mitigate acute pain.  相似文献

Our objective was to assess the effects of feeding negative dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) prepartum diets on milk production, reproductive performance, and culling. Cows from 4 commercial farms in Ontario, Canada were enrolled in a pen-level controlled trial from November 2017 to April 2019. Close-up pens (1 per farm) with cows 3 wk before calving were randomly assigned to a negative DCAD (TRT; ?108 mEq/kg of dry matter; target urine pH 6.0–6.5) or a control diet (CON; +105 mEq/kg of dry matter with a placebo supplement). Each pen was fed TRT or CON for 3 mo (1 period), and then switched to the other treatment for the next period (4 periods per farm). Data from 15 experimental units (8 pen treatments in TRT and 7 in CON), with a total of 1,086 observational units (cows), were included. The effect of treatment on milk yield at the first 3 milk recording tests of lactation was assessed with linear regression models accounting for repeated measures. The risk of pregnancy at first artificial insemination and culling by 30, 60, and 305 d in milk (DIM) were analyzed with logistic regression models, and effects on time to first AI, pregnancy, and culling were assessed with Cox proportional hazards models. All models included treatment, parity, and their interactions, accounting for pen-level randomization and clustering of animals within farm with random effects, giving 10 degrees of freedom for treatment effects. Multiparous cows fed TRT produced more milk at the first (42.0 vs. 38.8 ± 1.2 kg/d) and second (44.2 vs. 41.7 ± 1.3 kg/d) milk tests. However, multiparous cows fed TRT tended to have 0.2 percentage units less milk fat content at these tests. Although multiparous cows fed TRT tended to have greater energy-corrected milk at the first test (least squares means ± standard error: TRT = 46.1 ± 0.9 vs. CON = 43.8 ± 1 kg/d), there were no differences observed in energy-corrected milk at the second or third tests. In primiparous cows, there was no effect of treatment on milk production. Multiparous cows fed TRT had greater pregnancy to first insemination (TRT = 42 ± 3 vs. CON = 32 ± 4%) and tended to have shorter time to pregnancy [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.20; 95% CI: 0.96–1.49]. In primiparous cows fed TRT, time to pregnancy was increased (HR = 0.76; 95% CI: 0.59–0.99). Culling by 30 DIM tended to be less in TRT (3.3 ± 1.1%) than CON (5.5 ± 1.8%). No effect of treatment on culling by 305 DIM was detected in primiparous cows, but in multiparous cows, the TRT diets decreased the odds of culling (21.3 ± 1.9 vs. 31.7 ± 2.8%) and daily risk of culling to 305 DIM (HR = 0.64; 95% CI: 0.46 to 0.89). Under commercial herd conditions, prepartum negative DCAD diets improved milk production and reproductive performance, and reduced culling risk in multiparous cows. In primiparous cows, TRT diets had no effect on milk yield or culling, but increased the time to pregnancy. Our results suggest that negative DCAD diets should be targeted to multiparous cows.  相似文献

This field trial evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation with 16 mg/kg (based on total dry matter intake) of monensin sodium on bulk tank milk fat percentage (MFP) of commercial dairy herds. Interactions between monensin and nutritional factors on MFP were studied. The trial was conducted in 47 Holstein dairy herds in Québec, Canada, between November 2005 and May 2006. The herd was the unit of interest. Enrolled herds were followed for a 7-mo period. Monensin treatment was randomly allocated in a crossover design where monensin was supplemented to the lactating dairy cow diet for a consecutive 12-wk period. Twenty-four herds were allocated to monensin treatment for the first period of trial, and 23 herds were allocated for the second period. Diet composition and ration physically effective particle level were collected every 8 wk. Milk fat percentage data were retrieved from weekly bulk tank measures. Data were analyzed in linear mixed models using repeated measures within herd where MFP was considered the outcome variable. In addition to the main effect of monensin treatment, the following covariates were forced a priori into all statistical models: treatment period, weekly herd mean parity, and weekly herd mean days in milk. The majority of herds were fed a total mixed ration (n = 29) and were housed in tie-stalls (n = 42). Monensin significantly decreased bulk tank MFP by 0.12 percentage points. The reduction of MFP associated with monensin was larger for herds having a diet high (>39.7%) in nonfiber carbohydrates, having a low level of physically effective particles in ration (>45.0%; ≥8 mm), and not feeding dry hay as first meal in the morning. Significant interactions between monensin and nutritional factors on bulk tank MFP were related to nonfiber carbohydrate and fiber concentrations in the diet.  相似文献

Postoperative pain and its management following fistulation surgery in cattle are poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to compare 2 nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAID) as potential postoperative pain management treatments following the first stage of a 2-stage fistulation surgery. A randomized complete block design trial was conducted in dry Holstein cows (n = 10) following fistulation surgery. Ketoprofen (3 mg/kg of body weight i.m.) was administered on the day of surgery and 24 h later, whereas meloxicam (0.5 mg/kg of body weight s.c.) was administered once only on the day of surgery. Outcomes evaluated at 0, 2, 9, 24, 26, and 33 h postsurgery were heart rate, respiration rate, rectal temperature, and infrared temperature around the surgical site. Outcomes evaluated on the day of surgery and d 1 following surgery and compared with the average for the 4 d before surgery were lying activity (total lying time, total time spent lying on the left side, and percentage of time lying on the left side) and feed intake. A difference was observed in dry matter intake on d 1 but this effect was not different on d 0 compared with presurgical averages. A difference was observed in time spent lying on the left side and a difference was observed in heart rate following the first stage of fistulation surgery compared with presurgical averages. The infrared temperature readings around the surgical site were significantly greater in the hours following surgery compared with presurgical averages. The respiration rate increased over time after 24 h postsurgery compared with presurgical values. Although it was clear that the surgery is painful, the drug effects were more difficult to explain. On d 0 and 1, the meloxicam-treated cows ate 3 kg more but spent 101 min/d less time lying on their left side compared with ketoprofen-treated cows. The first stage of a 2-stage fistulation surgery was considered painful based on changes in heart rate, respiration rate, infrared temperature readings, dry matter intake, and time spent lying on the left side. It is clear that left flank surgery is painful and that NSAID can improve outcomes associated with that pain, but we cannot make recommendations as to which NSAID to choose based on these results.  相似文献

The expression of ras was investigated by using immunohistochemistry in 245 primary colorectal adenocarcinomas and 49 corresponding metastases in the lymph nodes. One hundred and forty-four (59%) of the primary tumours presented as ras positive and 37 (76%) were positive in metastases. The ras expression was positively related to cell proliferation (p=0.01) and significantly increased in tumours with aneuploidy (68%) compared to tumours with diploidy (51%) and tetraploidy (53%, p=0.01). The frequency of ras expression was increased from Dukes' stage A to stages B-D (41% vs 62%, p=0.01). ras expression was compared in 40 paired primary tumours and their corresponding metastases, and the difference in expression did not reach statistical significance (73% vs 83%, p=0.32). In survival analyses, ras overexpression predicted a poor prognosis independent of Dukes' stage, DNA ploidy and S-phase fraction (p=0.049). We did not find any significant relationship between ras expression and patients' sex, age, tumour location, growth pattern, differentiation, p53 expression or heat shock protein. The results indicate that the alteration of ras expression may be involved in the instability of DNA and cellular overproliferation, but not in the progression to advanced stage and the development of metastases. The expression of ras was an important biological marker for evaluating the prognosis in patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma.  相似文献

The effects of implant stiffness on load sharing and stress shielding, of vertebral column load sharing on implant fatigue life, and of instrumenting two versus one level adjacent to a comminuted segment on implant internal loads were studied. Finite element models of six screw constructs with 4.76 mm rod; 6.35 mm rod, and VSP plate tri-level instrumentation of two motion segments (healthy vertebra case and comminuted) and an adjacent healthy motion segment with dimensions representative of the human lumbar spine were used. Also a simplified model was developed to predict the percent of axial load passing through the column, which is a function of ki/kv the ratio of implant axial stiffness to instrumented vertebral column axial stiffness. For constructs with dimensions typical of the human lumbar spine, 77 to 80% of the axial load was predicted to pass through one or two healthy motion segments when instrumented with either 6.35 mm rod or VSP plates, compared to 90% when instrumented with 4.76 mm rods. When instrumenting smaller motion segments (in dogs) for comparison, 60% of the axial load was predicted to pass through the column for 4.76 mm rod and 33% for 6.35 mm rod constructs due to increased implant stiffness ki as a result of decreased AP and longitudinal construct dimensions, and lower canine motion segment stiffness kv.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
