This contribution summarizes efforts in designing, assembling/synthesizing, and structurally and functionally characterizing nanostructured materials using anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) as a thin-film template. Optical waveguide spectroscopy, using a nanoporous template as the guiding structure, is a particularly powerful analytical tool. The layer-by-layer approach for the fabrication of multilayer assemblies is shown to allow the fabrication of nanotube arrays. In addition to using dendrimers as building blocks, semiconducting nanomaterial (e.g., quantum dot) hybrid architectures with very interesting photophysical properties can be assembled. These can be employed, for example, in biosensing applications. Other strategies for using the AAO layers as templates include the growth of polymeric nanorod arrays from different functional monomers, which, after the dissolution of the template, are still able to guide light. This opens up novel concepts for integrated optics platforms with nanostructured materials.  相似文献

The occurrence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in foods of animal origin is a potential health threat because resistance can be transferred among bacteria, and antibiotic-resistant pathogens may not respond to antibiotic treatments. Thirteen brands of ready-to-eat shrimp representing four countries of origin were obtained from local grocery stores. Total heterotrophic plate counts were determined, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria were isolated. Total heterotrophic colony counts ranged from 3.3 to 5.6 log CFU/g, which was within approved quality limits. A total of 1,564 isolates representing 162 bacterial species were recovered during screening of resistance to 10 antibiotics: ampicillin, ceftriaxone, chloramphenicol, clindamycin, erythromycin, nalidixic acid, streptomycin, tetracycline, trimethoprim, and vancomycin. Six hundred fifty-seven (42%) of the isolates and 131 (81%) of the species had acquired resistance to antibiotics. Numerous resistant human pathogens were isolated, including Escherichia coli, Enterococcus spp., Salmonella, Shigella flexneri, Staphylococcus spp., and Vibrio spp. Nonresistant Yersinia spp. also were isolated. Ready-to-eat shrimp is sold with instructions to thaw the product before serving, which may result in consumer exposure to antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Widespread trade of this product provides an avenue for international dissemination of antibiotic-resistant pathogens.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of novel treatment techniques (ozone and ultrasound) on the dyeability of Angora rabbit fiber. For this purpose, the effects of the ozonation time and fiber moisture during ozonation on the dyeing properties of Angora rabbit fiber were researched. Also, dyeing was performed conventionally and with the use of ultrasound techniques after ozonation; these were compared in terms of the color yields. Consequently, it was found that the ozonation process and dyeing with power ultrasound improved the dyeability of Angora rabbit fiber significantly. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper focused on the assessment of antioxidant property and fatty acid composition of four Centaurea species. The antioxidant activity of its methanol extract was evaluated by several in vitro experiments including phosphomolybedum assay, DPPH assay, β-carotene/linoleic acid, ferric and cupric reducing power. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were also evaluated. The methanol extract of Centaurea pulcherrima var. pulcherrima showed the superior free radical scavenging activity, linoleic acid inhibition capacity, reducing power and also had the highest total phenolic content. A significant relationship between antioxidant capacity and total phenolic components was found. The oils of Centaurea taxa were also analysed for fatty acid concentration by gas chromatography. The principal fatty acids in the species were palmitic acid (23.38–30.49%) and linoleic acid (20.19–29.93%). These findings suggest that the Centaurea species could be used as a potential source of new natural antioxidants and unsaturated fatty acids in food industry, cosmetics and pharmaceutical preparations.  相似文献

This paper provides a general framework for studying the yellowing tendency of ozonated cotton fabric. Yellowing tendency of ozonated cotton fabric and ways to prevent this situation was examined extensively. For this purpose, five different treatments (hot/cold rinsing, washing, reductive washing, catalase treatment) were performed after ozonation. It was found that performing any kind of treatment was significantly important for preventing yellowing of ozonated cotton fabric during storage.  相似文献

In this article, two particular methods for the synthesis of the complex radiation pattern of a linear and a planar array, based on genetic algorithms (GAs), are discussed. First, we present a combination of Schelkunoff's method and GAs for linear arrays with arbitrary radiation patterns; then, we consider the synthesis of planar arrays with rectangular cells. The results show the flexibility of GAs to solve complex problems related to antenna synthesis, subject to many restrictions which are difficult to treat by classical optimization techniques. A natural bentonite modified with a cationic surfactant, cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), was used as an adsorbent for removal of phenol from aqueous solutions. The natural and modified bentonites (organobentonite) were characterized with some instrumental techniques (FTIR, XRD and SEM). Adsorption studies were performed in a batch system, and the effects of various experimental parameters such as solution pH, contact time, initial phenol concentration, organobentonite concentration, and temperature, etc. were evaluated upon the phenol adsorption onto organobentonite. Maximum phenol removal was observed at pH 9.0. Equilibrium was attained after contact of 1 h only. The adsorption isotherms were described by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models, and both model fitted well. The monolayer adsorption capacity of organobentonite was found to be 333 mg g−1. Desorption of phenol from the loaded adsorbent was achieved by using 20% acetone solution. The kinetic studies indicated that the adsorption process was best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 > 0.99). Thermodynamic parameters including the Gibbs free energy (ΔG°), enthalpy (ΔH°), and entropy (ΔS°) were also calculated. These parameters indicated that adsorption of phenol onto organobentonite was feasible, spontaneous and exothermic in the temperature range of 0–40 °C.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the host-specific differences in fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) profiles of fecal coliforms (FC). A known-source library was constructed with 314 FC isolates cultured from 6 possible sources of fecal pollution; 99 isolates from sewage; 29 from bovine; 29 from poultry; 50 from swine; 46 from waterfowl; and 61 from deer. It was found that the hydroxy FAMEs 12:0 2 OH, 12:03 OH, and 14:02 OH were exclusively associated with isolates of human origin. On the other hand, 3 saturated FAMEs, 10:0, 15:0, and 18:0 were found only in isolates from non-human sources, 15:0 being associated with livestock samples only. In addition to the presence of these signature FAMEs, the mean relative masses of 16:1 omega7c and 16:1 ISO/14:03 OH were significantly different between the isolates of human and non-human origins. A linear discriminant function differentiated FC isolates of human origin from those of livestock and wildlife origin at 99% accuracy. These results strongly suggest that the FAME profiles of FC show statistically significant host specificity and may have the potential to be used as a phenotypic microbial source tracking tool.  相似文献

In fish, fasting leads to loss of muscle mass. This condition triggers oxidative stress, and therefore, antioxidants can be an alternative to muscle recovery. We investigated the effects of antioxidant ascorbic acid (AA) on the morphology, antioxidant enzyme activity, and gene expression in the skeletal muscle of pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) following fasting, using in vitro and in vivo strategies. Isolated muscle cells of the pacu were subjected to 72 h of nutrient restriction, followed by 24 h of incubation with nutrients or nutrients and AA (200 µM). Fish were fasted for 15 days, followed by 6 h and 15 and 30 days of refeeding with 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg of AA supplementation. AA addition increased cell diameter and the expression of anabolic and cell proliferation genes in vitro. In vivo, 400 mg/kg of AA increased anabolic and proliferative genes expression at 6 h of refeeding, the fiber diameter and the expression of genes related to cell proliferation at 15 days, and the expression of catabolic and oxidative metabolism genes at 30 days. Catalase activity remained low in the higher supplementation group. In conclusion, AA directly affected the isolated muscle cells, and the higher AA supplementation positively influenced muscle growth after fasting.  相似文献
