The feasibility of power flattening while maintaining a nearly constant keff over the core life is assessed for the Encapsulated Nuclear Heat Source (ENHS). A couple of approaches are considered — using different fuel dimensions and using different enrichment levels across the core. Three new cores with flattened power distribution are successfully designed: Design-I uses different fuel rod diameters but uniform fuel composition; Design-II uses different fuel enrichment in the radial direction but uniform fuel rod dimensions; Design-III is similar to Design-II but uses enrichment splitting also in the axial direction. Relative to the reference ENHS core, the BOL peak-to-average channel power ratio is reduced from 1.50 to 1.15, 1.22 and 1.15 and the average discharge burnup increases by 8.5%, 27.9% and 41.2% for, respectively, Design-I, -II and -III. The corresponding burnup reactivity swings over 20 years of full power operation are 0.37%, 0.52% and 0.60% relative to 0.22% of the reference design. Design-II and -III have a negative coolant expansion reactivity defect while in the reference design this defect is positive. The radial power flattening increases the reactivity worth of the peripheral absorbers of the three new designs while the central absorber reactivity worth is reduced but their sum is nearly maintained. The newly designed cores have slightly more positive coolant void reactivity worth than the reference ENHS core.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Homology modeling is an important technique for making use of the rapidly increasing number of protein sequences in the absence of structural information. The major problems in such modeling, once the alignment has been made, concern the positions of loops and the orientations of sidechains. Although progress has been made in recent years for sidechain prediction, current methods appear to have a limit on the order of 70% in their accuracy. It is important to have an understanding of this limitation, which for energy-based methods could arise from inaccuracies of the potential function. RESULTS: A test of the CHARMM function for sidechain prediction was performed. To eliminate the multiple-residue search problem, the minimum energy positions of individual sidechains in ten proteins were calculated in the presence of all other sidechains in their crystal orientations. This test provides a necessary condition that any energy function useful for sidechain placement must satisfy. For chi1 x chi2 rotations, the accuracies were 77.4% and 89.5%, respectively, and in the presence of crystal waters were 86.5% and 94.9%, respectively. If there was an error, the crystal structure usually corresponded to an alternative local minimum on the calculated energy map. Prediction accuracy correlated with the size of the energy gap between primary and secondary minima. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that the errors in current sidechain prediction schemes cannot be attributed to the potential energy function per se. The test used here establishes a necessary condition that any proposed energy-based sidechain prediction method, as well as many statistically based methods, must satisfy.  相似文献

AIMS/BACKGROUND: A recent advancement in Doppler ultrasonography (US) is power Doppler for detecting low-velocity blood flow at the microvascular level with angle independence. The present study was performed to characterize the factors contributing to the power Doppler signals of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHOD: Correlation of Doppler signals of HCC in 114 patients with 178 HCC nodules was analyzed in relation to the findings of CT and angiography, tumor characteristics (size, echo pattern, and histological differentiation of tumor), viral markers and severity of liver disease. RESULTS: The sensitivity of power Doppler US was superior to that of CT and angiography (each p<0.05; McNemar's test). The detection rate of power Doppler signal was significantly higher in tumors with diameter > or =2 cm (vs <2 cm in diameter), and with low/mixed echo pattern (vs high echo appearance), and with moderately/poorly differentiated HCC (vs well-differentiated HCC). Univariate analysis revealed that echo pattern, tumor size and histological differentiation of HCC in addition to CT and angiographic findings were significant. Multivariate analysis showed that tumor size and differentiation were significant. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that tumor characteristics play an important role in power Doppler signals and that these could be assessed by the presence or absence of power Doppler signals.  相似文献

Metaquery (metapattern) is a data mining tool which is useful for learning rules involving more than one relation in the database. The notion of a metaquery has been proposed as a template or a second-order proposition in a language that describes the type of pattern to be discovered. This tool has already been successfully applied to several real-world applications.In this paper we advance the state of the art in metaquery research in several ways. First, we argue that the notion of a support value for metaqueries, where a support value is intuitively some indication to the relevance of the rules to be discovered, is not adequately defined in the literature, and, hence, propose our own definition. Second, we analyze some of the related computational problems, classify them as NP-hard and point out some tractable cases. Third, we propose some efficient algorithms for computing support and present preliminary experimental results that indicate the usefulness of our algorithms.  相似文献

Old Yellow Enzyme (OYE) binds phenolic ligands forming long wavelength (500-800 nm) charge-transfer complexes. The enzyme is reduced by NADPH, and oxygen, quinones, and alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones can act as electron acceptors to complete catalytic turnover. Solution of the crystal structure of OYE1 from brewer's bottom yeast (Fox, K. M., and Karplus, P. A. (1994) Structure 2, 1089-1105) made it possible to identify histidine 191 and asparagine 194 as amino acid residues that hydrogen-bond with the phenolic ligands, stabilizing the anionic form involved in charge-transfer interaction with the FMN prosthetic group. His-191 and Asn-194 are also predicted to interact with the nicotinamide ring of NADPH in the active site. Mutations of His-191 to Asn, Asn-194 to His, and a double mutation, H191N/N194H, were made of OYE1. It was not possible to isolate the N191H mutant enzyme, but the other two mutant forms had the expected effect on phenolic ligand binding, i.e. decreased binding affinity and decreased charge-transfer absorbance. Reduction of the H191N mutant enzyme by NADPH was similar to that of OYE1, but the reduction rate constant for NADH was greatly decreased. The double mutant enzyme had an increased rate constant for reduction by NADPH, but the reduction rate constant with NADH was lower by a factor of 15. The reactivity of OYE1 and the mutant enzymes with oxygen was similar, but the reactivity of 2-cyclohexenone was greatly decreased by the mutations. The crystal structures of the two mutant forms showed only minor changes from that of the wild type enzyme.  相似文献

The methodology involved in the modeling and simulation of physical, life and social science systems is viewed in perspective. A critical factor determining the validity of a model is the extent to which it can be derived from basic laws and insights into the internal structure of the system using deductive methods, rather than relying upon observations and measurements of the system input and outputs. Accordingly, the mathematical models as they arise in various application disciplines are arranged along a spectrum according to the relative amount of deduction and induction involved in their construction. Neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), like other intensive care units, are intended to provide immediate responses to any change in the patients condition. Patient-monitoring alarms and alarms from other medical equipment are very common in these units, and most alarms have no clinical significance. This study addresses the question of how alarms affect nurses actions by measuring the occurrence of alarms from different causes in a NICU, recording the nurses reactions, and analyzing the relationship between the alarms and the actions. The results show that nurses often do not respond directly to alarms, but, rather, use them as additional sources of information in their ongoing flow of actions. The probabilities for their responding to an alarm depend on the causes of the alarm, its duration, and the characteristics of the patient. These findings support the view that experienced nurses dynamically adjust their activities according to the information they receive from alarm systems and other sources, and that they combine their reactive actions with the periodic performance of routine tasks.  相似文献

The focus of expansion plays an important role in many vision applications such as three-dimensional reconstruction, range estimation, time-to-impact computation, and obstacle avoidance. Most current techniques are based on correspondence or on accurate flow estimation and are therefore considered computationally heavy. This paper presents an efficient technique to find the focus of expansion from optical flow. The technique utilizes a specially designed matched filter that does not require an exact estimation of the optical flow but rather can use a low-quality estimation of it. In addition, based on the location of the focus of expansion and its immediate neighborhood, the paper suggests a way to estimate the range to the focus of expansion. Like the prehistoric twig and stone, tangible user interfaces (TUIs) are objects manipulated by humans. Tangible user interface success will depend on how well they exploit spatiality, the intuitive spatial skills humans have with the objects they use. In this paper, we carefully examine the relationship between humans and physical objects, and related previous research. From this examination, we distill a set of observations and turn these into heuristics for incorporation of spatiality into TUI application design, a cornerstone for their success. Following this line of thought, we identify spatial TUIs, the subset of TUIs that mediate interaction with shape, space and structure. We then examine several existing spatial TUIs using our heuristics.  相似文献

In recent years, molecular dynamics simulations of biomolecular free energy differences have benefited from significant methodological advances and increased computer power. Applications to molecular recognition provide an understanding of the interactions involved that goes beyond, and is an important complement to, experimental studies. Poisson-Boltzmann electrostatic models provide a faster and simpler free energy method in cases where electrostatic interactions are important. We illustrate both molecular dynamics and Poisson-Boltzmann methods with a detailed study of amino acid recognition by aspartyl-tRNA synthetase, whose specificity is important for maintaining the integrity of the genetic code.  相似文献
