In our global village, distance is not a barrier anymore for traveling. People experience new cultures and face accompanying difficulties in order to live anywhere. Social support can help these sojourners to cope with difficulties, such as culture shock. In this paper, we investigate how computer-mediated communication (CMC) tools can facilitate social support when living physically separated from loved-ones in different cultures. The goal is to understand the design considerations necessary to design new CMC tools. We studied communication practices of Chinese sojourners living in the Netherlands and the use of a technology probe with a novel video communication system. These results led to recommendations which can help designers to design interactive communication tools that facilitate communication across cultures. We conclude the paper with an interactive communication device called Circadian, which was designed based on these recommendations. We experienced the design recommendations to be abstract enough to leave space for creativity while providing a set of clear requirements which we used to base design decisions upon. 相似文献

The NP-hard microaggregation problem seeks a partition of data points into groups of minimum specified size k, so as to minimize the sum of the squared euclidean distances of every point to its group's centroid. One recent heuristic provides an O(k3) guarantee for this objective function and an O(k2) guarantee for a version of the problem that seeks to minimize the sum of the distances of the points to its group's centroid. When meeting someone new, the first impression is often influenced by someone’s physical appearance and other types of prejudice.
In this paper, we present TouchMeDare, an interactive canvas, which aims to provide an experience when meeting new people,
while preventing visual prejudice and lowering potential thresholds. The focus of the designed experience was to stimulate
people to get acquainted through the interactive canvas. TouchMeDare consists of a flexible, opaque canvas, which plays music
when touched simultaneously from both sides. Dynamic variation of this bodily contact is reflected through real-time adaptations
of the musical compositions. Two redesigns were qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated and a final version was placed
in the Lowlands Festival as a case study. Evaluation results showed that some explanation was needed for the initial interaction
with the installation. On the other hand, after this initial unfamiliarity passed, results showed that making bodily contact

Reactive blending at 290 °C of a series of mixtures of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(1,4-butylene succinate) (PBS) led to the formation of block PET/PBS copolyesters. The block lengths of the resulting copolymers decreased with the severity of the treatment. Copolyesters with PET/PBS molar compositions of 90/10, 80/20, 70/30, and 50/50 were prepared by this method and their composition and microstructure were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, respectively. The Tg, Tm, and crystallinity of the copolymers decreased as the content in PBS and the degree of randomness increased. The elastic modulus and tensile strength of the copolymers decreased with the content of PBS, whereas, on the contrary, the elongation at break increased. The PET/PBS copolymers exhibited a pronounced hydrolytic degradability, which increased with the content in 1,4-butylene succinic units. Hydrolysis mainly occurred on the aliphatic ester groups. 相似文献

In this paper, two computationally efficient algorithms are presented for determining the least possible time paths for all origins to a single destination in networks where the arc weights are discrete random variables whose probability distribution functions vary with time. The first algorithm determines the least possible time path from each node for each departure time interval, the least possible travel time and a lower bound on the associated probability of the occurrence of this travel time. The second algorithm determines up to k least possible time paths, the associated travel times and the corresponding probabilities of occurrence of the travel times (or a lower bound on this probability). The distribution, density, biomass and size-structure of the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) population in Lake Winnipeg were examined between 2017 and 2019. Zebra mussels have colonized most of the available hard substrate in the south basin and Narrows region, but colonization of the north basin remains low at present, even on suitable substrate. Numerical densities and shell free biomass peaked at 5530 ± 953 m?2 and 64.7 ± 57.9 g shell free dry mass m?2 respectively. The distribution appeared to be strongly limited by substrate type and availability, with further limitations on the distribution imposed by physical disturbance in shallow waters and unsuitable substrate in deeper areas of the lake. Zebra mussels <1 year old dominated the populations, and individuals >18 mm were exceedingly rare. Poor recruitment was observed at sites along the eastern side of the south basin compared to elsewhere in the lake. The proximate causes of these differences in colonization success and recruitment are not clear, but may be in part due to heterogeneous patterns of key physico-chemical environmental conditions such as calcium concentrations required for successful development of juvenile mussels and colder water temperatures in the north basin. This study provides a baseline of information on which to track further expansion of zebra mussels in Lake Winnipeg and assist efforts to develop an understanding of how zebra mussels may affect the ecology of Lake Winnipeg. 相似文献

Microalgae-based biorefineries for the production of renewable biofuels like biodiesel, upgraded bio-oil, biochar, biogas and other high-value chemicals have received great attention in recent decades as potential major sources of energy for the future. Microalgae are a suitable species to produce biodiesel and other high energy density by-products; however, it is questionable whether a net energy gain can be realized or not considering the whole processing chain. In the present study, the energy balances of different algae-based biofuel and bioenergy production technologies are investigated in detail and compared to each other corresponding to a cradle-to-grave overall energetic analysis. The study includes cultivation, harvesting, cell pretreatments (cell disruption, drying, grinding), lipid extraction, transesterification, gasification and hydrothermal liquefaction with bio-oil stabilization and hydroprocessing. The energy consumption and energy gain are estimated for each operational step to determine the net energy ratio (NER, energy output over energy input) for the overall technologies studied. Our detailed investigation enables to detect the most energy consuming unit operation, that is, the bottleneck point(s) of the microalgae-based technologies which should be still improved in the future for the sake of more efficient algae-based biorefineries. The investigation makes also possible to evaluate and compare the different large scale alternatives for biomass transformation. Positive energy balances with a NER value of 1.109 and 1.137 are found in two already existing processes: open raceway ponds and closed photobioreactors, respectively.
