Disciplinary Non-Consolidation. On the Origins of Medieval Archaeology in the 1920s and the 1930s. This article investigates the roots of the sub-discipline medieval archaeology that emerged in German-speaking universities in the 1950s and 1960s. In the 1930s, research practices crucial for the formation of medieval archaeology, such as the investigation of medieval castles and peasant houses, became more prominent in the humanities, especially in the context of völkisch research. After the Nazis took power in Germany, they encouraged such research because it built a scientific basis for their nationalist policy. This politically motivated funding did not result in a new discipline, in contrast to research fields such as prehistory and folklore studies. In this article, I propose two explanations for why medieval archaeology did not emerge as an interdisciplinary research field in the 1930s and 1940s, even though the course was set for its development. First, for archaeologists, art historians, and regional medieval historians, research objects such as medieval castles were semantically too indeterminate. Archaeologists would investigate a castle as a building completely destroyed and buried under rubble, while art historians would be interested in its building technique, and regional medieval historians in its written record. Second, disciplines that were important for the creation of medieval archaeology, such as prehistoric archaeology, art history, and regional medieval history, structurally did not allow for the emergence of an interdisciplinary research field in the 1930s. In particular, prehistoric archaeology, which was crucial for the development of medieval archaeology, itself was not fully institutionalized at universities in the 1930s. This institutionalization process prevented the emergence and development of an interdisciplinary research field such as medieval archaeology. To demonstrate this argument, I draw on two examples of investigations of castles, one in Nazi Germany and the other in the German-speaking part of Switzerland.  相似文献

A mathematical model was developed from experimental measurements to describe the evolution of the O2, CO2 and ethylene in a modified atmosphere packaging system for Cavendish bananas. The respiration and ethylene production in the fruits were experimentally obtained from a closed system method and then represented by Michaelis–Menten equations of enzyme kinetics. The gas transfer through the packaging was described by a Fick's diffusion equation, and the temperature dependence was represented based on the Arrhenius law. The model was validated by packaging the fruit in perforated bags of polypropylene and low density polyethylene at 12 °C for a period of 8 days. With the developed model it was possible to satisfactorily describe the experimental evolution of the gas content in the headspace of the packages, obtaining coefficients of determination (R2) of 0.93 for the O2 levels, 0.90–0.91 for the CO2 levels, and 0.89–0.93 for the ethylene levels.  相似文献

During a screening of Salmonella enterica in foods of animal origin four isolates of serovar Typhimurium carrying hybrid virulence-resistance plasmids were detected. Three of them, one from pork and two from chicken meat, contained pUO-StVR2, a derivative of the pSLT virulence plasmid with the blaOXA-1, catA1, aadA1, sulI and tet(B) genes, which confer resistance to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin-spectinomycin, sulfonamides and tetracycline, respectively. The fourth isolate, from pork, harbored a pUO-StVR2 variant (termed ν8) with an additional dfrA10 gene responsible for resistance to trimethoprim. This gene is part of the orf513-dfrA10-qacEΔ1-sul1 element characteristically found in complex class 1 integrons. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis identified two XbaI-BlnI combined profiles: X2-B2 generated from the three pUO-StVR2 isolates, and X12-B17 shown by the pUO-StVR2-ν8 isolate. The same profiles have also been found in clinical and ill pig isolates, supporting chicken and pork meat as vehicles for transmission of Typhimurium carrying pUO-StVR2-like plasmids.  相似文献

The European “Floods Directive” 2007/60/EC (FD) asks Member States to develop flood risk maps on the bases of most appropriate and advanced tools, with particular attention on limiting required economic efforts. The question arises on how these tools should be selected so as to supply all the knowledge that is required to develop Flood Risk Management Plans (FRMPs). By analysing the implementation of the FD in the Po River Basin (Italy), the paper describes and compares two different approaches for flood risk assessment: the expert driven-qualitative approach vs. the quantitative approach based on damage models. The comparison shows, as expected, that quantitative approaches supply more useful knowledge for the development of FRMPs (and for flood risk management in general) with respect to qualitative approaches. However, they still present limits which prevent their adoption without critically consider the peculiarities of the investigated area in terms of available knowledge on hazard, exposure and vulnerability. Accordingly, considerations are supplied on how effectiveness of quantitative approaches can be maximized, towards flood risk management objectives.  相似文献

Flexible barriers are increasingly used for the protection from debris flow in mountainous terrain due to their low cost and environmental impact. However, the development of a numerical tool for the rational design of such structures is still a challenge. In this work, a hybrid computational framework is presented, using a total Lagrangian formulation of the finite element method to represent a flexible barrier. The actions exerted on the structure by a debris flow are obtained from simultaneous simulations of the flow of a fluid‐grain mixture, using two conveniently coupled solvers: the discrete element method governs the motion of the grains, while the free‐surface non‐Newtonian fluid phase is solved using the lattice Boltzmann method. Simulations on realistic geometries show the dependence of the momentum transfer on the barrier on the composition of the debris flow, challenging typical assumptions made during the design process today. In particular, we demonstrate that both grains and fluid contribute in a nonnegligible way to the momentum transfer. Moreover, we show how the flexibility of the barrier reduces its vulnerability to structural collapse, and how the stress is distributed on its fabric, highlighting potential weak points.  相似文献

In many basins, hydrogen-emitting structures are now observed, but the estimation of the H2 flow leading to their formation remains poorly constrained since all data show that the H2 emissions are variable in space and time. We present here the data of a long-term monitoring campaign with a high density of permanent hydrogen detectors installed in 2 structures in the Minas Gerais State (Brazil). Results show that two kinds of signals are recorded, large sporadic pulses that affect the H2 content of the soil for one or two days and smaller ones, with a daily periodicity, that last 6 h and during which the near surface soil concentration usually does not exceed 200 ppm. This last signal is very regular in frequency, less in amount, and the daily maximum happens around noon or in the early afternoon. We interpret the large pulses as evidences of a deep hydrogen flux, leaking either from a reservoir located in the subsurface, from an aquifer which is degassing or, although it seems unlikely, directly from the H2 generation area.The time correlation between the pulse and the increase of the daily signal suggests that this last one corresponds to the slow release of the gas that has been captured by the soil during its transport towards the surface. This daily signal is most likely influenced by external factors such as atmospheric pressure and sub-surface bacterial activity. In map view, the lack of correlation between the highest hydrogen concentrations over time suggests that the soil is very heterogeneous and that preferential pathways exist. The results confirm that long-term monitoring, over a few months, is mandatory to catch a certain number of high pulses and so to have a better estimation of the real flow. Data also suggests that sensors with a large concentration range should be used (from 10 to several 104 ppm). Even if quantification of leakage doesn't help to quantify the subsurface reserves, these new data allow a more precise evaluation of the quantity of H2 released in surface by these structures, few hundred of kilo per day, and confirm the high H2 prospectivity of this basin.  相似文献

A model of reservoir activation and viral replication is introduced accounting for the production of 2-LTR HIV-1 DNA circles following antiviral intensification with the HIV integrase inhibitor raltegravir, considering contributions of de novo infection events and exogenous sources of infected cells, including quiescent infected cell activation. The model shows that a monotonic increase in measured 2-LTR concentration post intensification is consistent with limited de novo infection primarily maintained by sources of infected cells unaffected by raltegravir, such as quiescent cell activation, while a transient increase in measured 2-LTR concentration is consistent with significant levels of efficient (R0 > 1) de novo infection. The model is validated against patient data from the INTEGRAL study and is shown to have a statistically significant fit relative to the null hypothesis of random measurement variation about a mean. We obtain estimates and confidence intervals for the model parameters, including 2-LTR half-life. Seven of the 13 patients with detectable 2-LTR concentrations from the INTEGRAL study have measured 2-LTR dynamics consistent with significant levels of efficient replication of the virus prior to treatment intensification.  相似文献
