The environmental performance of 316L grade stainless steel, in the form of tensile specimens containing a single corrosion pit with various aspect ratios, under cyclic loading in aerated chloride solutions is investigated in this study. Results from environmental tests were compared and contrasted with those obtained using finite element analysis (FEA). Fractography of the failed specimens obtained from experiments revealed that fatigue crack initiation took place at the base of the shallow pit. The crack initiation shifted towards the shoulder and the mouth of the pit for pits of increasing depth. This process is well predicted by FEA, as the strain contour maps show that strain is the highest around the centric strip of the pit. However, for shallow pits, local strain is uniformly distributed around that strip but begins to concentrate more towards the shoulder and the mouth region for increasingly deep pits. 相似文献

Listeria monocytogenes has continuously become a significant threat to consumers worldwide. The use of chemical-derived preservatives that are commonly associated with safety and nutritional issues has prompted the use of natural-based preservatives as a better alternative. Many bacterial strains including Paenibacillus polymyxa Kp10 have been reported to produce various antimicrobial proteins and compounds that are considered more natural. However, their stability in various physicochemical conditions should be examined before being applied in various types of food. In this study, the stability of four previously identified antilisterial proteins in P. polymyxa Kp10 upon exposure to several physicochemical conditions was examined. More than 80% residual antilisterial activity is conserved upon heat and proteinase K treatment. But, sensitivity to 24 h trypsin digestion has been observed. P1 and P2 proteins (histone-like DNA binding proteins HU) were sensitive to alkaline pH (pH 10-12) as compared with other proteins. More than 70% and 97% residual antilisterial activity were recovered after incubation in raw beef homogenates and simulated meat gravy model, respectively. However, the antilisterial activity of most proteins was highly compromised in chicken and salmon meat homogenates, and UHT cow milk. Inoculation of these proteins into Listeria-contaminated simulated meat gravy showed that all proteins exerted a bactericidal action against L. monocytogenes. P1 and P2 shared almost similar antilisterial activity rates, while P4 was the most potent antilisterial protein. The findings in this study could provide important preliminary data for future applications of these proteins as preservative in food products especially beef-based meat products. 相似文献

Ethanol and lactic acid production using sap squeezed from old oil palm trunks felled for replanting

Old oil palm trunks that had been felled for replanting were found to contain large quantities of high glucose content sap. Notably, the sap in the inner part of the trunk accounted for more than 80% of the whole trunk weight. The glucose concentration of the sap from the inner part was 85.2 g/L and decreased towards the outer part. Other sugars found in relatively low concentrations were sucrose, fructose, galactose, xylose, and rhamnose. In addition, oil palm sap was found to be rich in various kinds of amino acids, organic acids, minerals and vitamins. Based on these findings, we fermented the sap to produce ethanol using the sake brewing yeast strain, Saccharomyces cerevisiae Kyokai no.7. Ethanol was produced from the sap without the addition of nutrients, at a comparable rate and yield to the reference fermentation on YPD medium with glucose as a carbon source. Likewise, we produced lactic acid, a promising material for bio-plastics, poly-lactate, from the sap using the homolactic acid bacterium Lactobacillus lactis ATCC19435. We confirmed that sugars contained in the sap were readily converted to lactic acid with almost the same efficiency as the reference fermentation on MSR medium with glucose as a substrate. These results indicate that oil palm trunks felled for replanting are a significant resource for the production of fuel ethanol and lactic acid in palm oil-producing countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia. 相似文献

The biogenic amines tryptamine (TRP), putrescine (PUT), histamine (HIS), tyramine (TYR) and spermidine (SPD) were determined in 62 selected food items commonly consumed in Malaysia. This include the local appetisers “budu” and “cincalok”, canned fish, salt-cured fish, meat products, fruit juice, canned vegetables/fruits and soy bean products. After the aqueous extraction, the samples were derivatised with dansyl chloride before analysing using reversed phase HPLC with UV detection. Mean levels of TRP, PUT, HIS, TYR and SPD in eight budu samples were 82.7, 38.1, 187.7, 174.7 and 5.1 mg kg−1, respectively. The main biogenic amines found in cincalok were PUT, HIS and TYR where the mean values were 330.7, 126.1 and 448.8 mg kg−1, respectively. With the exception of “pekasam” and “belacan”, significantly lower levels of biogenic amines were found in canned fish and salt-cured fish samples. ZnO nanorods were synthesized using a low-cost sol-gel spin coating technique. The synthesized nanorods were consisted of hexagonal phase having c-axis orientation. SEM images reflected perpendicular ZnO nanorods forming bridging network in some areas. The impact of different hydrogen concentrations on the Pd-sensitized ZnO nanorods was investigated using an impedance spectroscopy (IS). The grain boundary resistance (Rgb) significantly contributed to the sensing properties of hydrogen gas. The boundary resistance was decreased from 11.95 to 3.765 kΩ when the hydrogen concentration was increased from 40 to 360 ppm. IS gain curve showed a gain of 6.5 for 360 ppm of hydrogen at room temperature. Nyquist plot showed reduction in real part of impedance at low frequencies on exposure to different concentrations of hydrogen. Circuit equivalency was investigated by placing capacitors and resistors to identify the conduction mechanism according to complex impedance Nyquist plot. Variations in nanorod resistance and capacitance in response to the introduction of various concentrations of hydrogen gas were obtained from the alternating current impedance spectra. 相似文献

The application of supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) coupled with a UV variable-wavelength detector to isolate the
minor components (carotenes, vitamin E, sterols, and squalene) in crude palm oil (CPO) and the residual oil from palm-pressed
fiber is reported. SFC is a good technique for the isolation and analysis of these compounds from the sources mentioned. The
carotenes, vitamin E, sterols, and squalene were isolated in less than 20 min. The individual vitamin E isomers present in
palm oil were also isolated into their respective components, α-tocopherol, α-tocotrienol, γ-tocopherol, γ-tocotrienol, and
δ-tocotrienol. Calibration of all the minor components of palm as well as the individual components of palm vitamin E was

Abstract The importance of liquid viscosity in chemical process design makes it one of the most measured transport properties. Nevertheless, in the pure-component database, no experimental data on liquid viscosity for nearly 50% of the compounds are available. Therefore, prediction methods for liquid viscosity of alkenes over a wide range of absolute temperature for each components are necessary. Moreover, experimental data measured at lower temperatures are often extrapolated to higher temperatures with erroneous results. To improve liquid viscosity prediction of experimental data to temperatures and carbon numbers, we propose an empirical rule for estimating the viscosity of alkenes compounds. A predictive method, based physical properties (absolute temperature and carbon numbers) as its inputs, to correlate liquid viscosity by the statistical analysis is proposed. For a group of 19 compounds, the mean average absolute deviation was 4.6% for 118 data points. These values are better than other predictive methods and show that the statistical analysis model is stable and can be used to obtain good predictions for compounds that were not used in the model calibration. 相似文献

The effect of a feedback control on the onset of steady and oscillatory Bénard–Marangoni instability in a rotating horizontal fluid layer is considered theoretically using linear stability theory. It is demonstrated that generally the critical Marangoni number for transition from the no-motion (conduction) to the motion state can be drastically increased by the combined effects of feedback control and rotation. The role of the controller gain parameter on the Pr-Ta and Pr-R/Rc parameter spaces, dividing stability domains into which either steady or oscillatory convection is preferred, is determined. 相似文献

In this paper the effect of sintering temperature on Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 is examined closely. The evolution of toward magnetically ordered materials was to be tracked with the parallel evolving
microstructure subjected to sintering temperatures in an ascending order. The starting powder of Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 was prepared via mechanical alloying and later molded into toroidal samples. After each sintering, we observed the resulting
changes in the materials. The XRD data showed a single phase being formed as early as 600 °C and the peak intensity was increasing
with the sintering temperature indicating an increase in the degree of crystallinity. The BH hysteresis loops showed the evolution
from paramagnetism to moderate ferromagnetism to strong ferromagnetism with microstructural changes. For lower sintering temperatures,
the samples showed paramagnetic behavior dominating the samples. As sintering temperature increased, paramagnetic states decreased
and, at 900 °C, a moderately ferromagnetic state appeared. Sintering at 1000 °C produced a strongly ferromagnetic state giving
