A hierarchical exception handler binding mechanism

A mechanism is proposed for binding exception handlers to exceptions. Hierarchical exception classes can be defined and changed during program execution. In addition, the action taken when an exception of a particular class is raised depends upon the type of the current exception handler for that class. The mechanism can be implemented in programming languages that allow runtime determination of an identifier's binding; most dynamically scoped programming languages meet this criterion.     

Time-dependent gain and absorption in a 5 J UV preionized XeCl laser

The operating characteristics of a wide aperture (5 × 4.5 cm²), high output energy (5 J), UV preionized XeCl laser are described. The time dependence of the gain and absorption have been measured for both He and Ne based laser gas mixes. These measurements were correlated with the discharge current and voltage waveforms. For optimized laser gas mixes and pressures, the absorption for He based laser mixes was ten times higher than for Ne based mixes. Absorption data are also presented for the component gas mixes.     

Psycholinguistic abilities of children in isolated communities of Labrador.

A total of 101 kindergarten and Grade-1 children from 4 isolated coastal communities in Labrador were given the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, and Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities. The differential psycholinguistic profiles of the Ss are reported. These results offer support for the claim that ecological demands to some extent determine cognitive structures. Results also indicate that the Ss had abilities in a number of areas that were within 1 standard deviation of the mean for the normative sample. These suggest areas that could be capitalized upon in order to make the educational system more meaningful to these children. Standards for microsystems

Standardization is emerging as a very important element to be considered when larger computer systems are specified and designed. This article reviews some types of standard which might be applied and the effects of their application.     

Incidental stimulation: A study of preconscious transformations.

Continuing the studies from the NYU Research Center for Mental Health on the effect of subliminal stimuli upon perception, the examiner tests the effect of such auditory stimuli upon the production of fantasy, in this instance, inventive stories. Fantasy stories subsequent to exposure to subliminal speech were analyzed in terms of symbolic representations or transformed derivatives of the original stimuli. The result generally confirms the effect of subliminal stimulation on thinking and the findings are related to the psychoanalytic theory of primary and secondary thinking. 20 refs. Analysis of a multi-criteria project crashing model

The purpose of this paper is to report on the model formulation and results of a multi-criteria time-cost (crashing) CPM project network. In the project of interest (the installation of a bank paper processing system), multiple and conflicting objectives concerning both time and cost must be incorporated into the decision analysis. The project network is, therefore, formulated as a goal programming model, including the various managerial objectives as goal constraints and associated priorities.     

Plastic collapse pressures for conical ends of cylindrical pressure vessels and their relationship to design rules in two british standard specifications

A numerical method is used to calculate lower bounds to collapse loads for cone-cylinder intersections. The method incorporates Carroll's optimisation procedure³ as developed by Robinson.⁵ Current methods of designing cone intersections, used in BS 1515,¹ BS 5500,² are discussed in relation to the results.     

Recurrent hypernatremia; a proposed mechanism in a patient with absence of thirst and abnormal excretion of water

A 7-year-old girl twice developed severe hypernatremia (serum sodium values up to 194 mEq/l) without obvious cause. The ability of her kidneys to conserve water was normal, and increasing her plasma osmolality stimulated an appropriate ADH response. Unable to excrete a water load, her kidneys continued to conserve water even with a serum sodium concentration of 133 mEq/l. She was never thirsty and did not ingest sufficient fluid by choice. Although there was no demonstrable anatomic lesion, we postulate a localized defect of her thirst center. This may have modified release of ADH and resulted in an inability to dilute the urine by interrupting a pathway that could exist from the thirst center to the supraoptic nuclei. A therapeutic regimen based on these studies has prevented further hypernatremia.
