Beaver (Castor spp.) normally scent-mark by depositing castoreum and/or anal gland secretion on scent mounds close to the water's edge. The aim of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that the Eurasian beaver (C. fiber) scent-marks as a means of territory defense. Scent-marking behavior was studied during an entire year (April 1, 1995–March 31, 1996) in seven adjacent territories along 9.2 km of the B River in Telemark County, Norway. The number and location of fresh scent marks were recorded biweekly. The main results showed that: (1) the number of scent marks in territories was significantly higher in spring, when dispersal of subadults normally occurs than during the rest of the year; (2) the number of scent marks was clumped near territorial borders; and (3) the number of scent marks was significantly greater upstream than downstream of the lodge.  相似文献

Touch-based interaction is becoming increasingly popular and is commonly used as the main interaction paradigm for self-service kiosks in public spaces. Touch-based interaction is known to be visually intensive, and current non-haptic touch-display technologies are often criticized as excluding blind users. This study set out to demonstrate that touch-based kiosks can be designed to include blind users without compromising the user experience for non-blind users. Most touch-based kiosks are based on absolute positioned virtual buttons which are difficult to locate without any tactile, audible or visual cues. However, simple stroke gestures rely on relative movements and the user does not need to hit a target at a specific location on the display. In this study, a touch-based train ticket sales kiosk based on simple stroke gestures was developed and tested on a panel of blind and visually impaired users, a panel of blindfolded non-visually impaired users and a control group of non-visually impaired users. The tests demonstrate that all the participants managed to discover, learn and use the touch-based self-service terminal and complete a ticket purchasing task. The majority of the participants completed the task in less than 4?min on the first attempt.  相似文献

Causes and effects of a few real faults in a hydronic heating system are explained in this paper. Since building energy management system (BEMS) has to be utilized in fault detection and diagnosis (FDD), practical explanations of faults and their related effects are important to building caretakers. A simple heat balance model is used in this study. The model is calibrated using the optimization tool. Site data from the BEMS of a real building are calibrated against the model. Desired and real data are compared, so that the effects of the following faults are analyzed: faults in an outdoor air temperature sensor, fault in the time schedule, and a water flow imbalance problem. This paper presents an overview of the real causes of the faults and their effects both on the energy consumption and on the indoor air temperature. In addition, simple instructions for the building caretakers for fault detection in the hydronic heating systems are given.  相似文献

The electrooxidation of formic acid on polycrystalline platinum electrodes in sulphuric acid is studied by a dynamic impedance method. Impedance spectra in the frequency range 0.7 Hz to 20 kHz, assembled from ac voltammograms, are interpreted in terms of a mechanism with three adsorbed species, although one of these may be free sites. The spectra show evidence for incipient oscillations in two potential regions, and observed oscillations were related to these spectra. The zeroes of the interfacial impedance were directly extracted from suitable equivalent circuits in distinct potential regions where oscillations may be triggered. The observation of only real zeroes of the interfacial impedance eliminates the possibility of pure potentiostatic oscillations arising from chemical reasons alone, and therefore potential is an essential variable.  相似文献

When acid aluminium (Al) rich water is limed, unstable mixing zones are formed until equilibrium is reached. In such mixing zones transient high molecular mass positively charged Al-species (HMM Al(i)) being extremely gill reactive are produced, causing toxic effects in fish. The transient HMM Al(i)-species are formed due to hydrolysis and polymerization of low molecular positively charged Al-species (LMM Al(i)), e.g. initiated by liming and the subsequent increase in pH. To counteract the toxicity of transient Al polymers in such mixing zones, sodium silicate, forming non-toxic hydroxyaluminosilicate (HAS) complexes, can be used as alternative to liming. In the present work the effect of sodium silicate on polymerization of LMM Al(i) in unstable mixing zones and subsequent gill reactivity and mortality of fish was compared to results obtained from liming. Diluted sodium silicate (<1.5 g l(-1)) and lime slurry (Ca(OH)(2)), respectively, were continually added to acidified Al-rich water in six different channel-tank systems, to obtain mixing zones with pH 5.9, 6.0 and 6.4, respectively. Utilising in situ size and charge fractionation techniques and following the exposure of Atlantic presmolt (Salmo salar L.) kept in cages at defined stations along the channel-tank systems, changes of Al-species in the mixing zones, the gill reactivity of Al-species and thus Al toxicity could be followed downstream the confluences (time of reaction after mixing: 1-100 min). By increasing the pH of the acid water to 6.0 or 6.4 by sodium silicate, the detoxification of Al was faster than using lime. Using sodium silicate, the transformation of LMM Al(i), the formation of HMM Al(i), the Al deposition in fish gills and fish mortality were lower than using lime. The formation of neutral LMM Al-species (Al(o)) was, however, higher and the formation of colloidal Al-species (Al(c)) lower in the presence of silicate compared to lime. Furthermore, the Al deposition in fish gills and fish mortality decreased by increasing concentration of sodium silicate dosed. Thus, sodium silicate is a good alternative to liming, and under certain circumstances when aging of water may represent a problem (e.g. aquaculture) sodium silicate should be the preferred agent.  相似文献

An effective method is developed to predict the thermal conductivity of thick foam insulation on offshore oil and gas pipelines. High‐resolution three‐dimensional (3D) images (212 megavoxels) spanning macroscopic sample volumes (38 × 19 × 4 mm3) are obtained and used to create a 3D geometry of the foam. A gravimetric technique is developed to measure the mass density through the foam thickness and used to verify the 3D geometry. The local anisotropic thermal conductivity through the thickness of the foam is calculated using the finite element method on the 3D geometry and the results are verified against measurements and found to be in good agreement. Results show that thermal conductivity is dependent on morphology. For the highly anisotropic part of the foam where the long axes of the bubbles are oriented parallel to the axial direction of the pipe, the radial thermal conductivity is lowered significantly compared to more isotropic foam. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel investigation to decrease the interfacial contact resistance of stainless steel bipolar plates was performed. A thin layer of Sn was electrodeposited onto a bipolar plate and subsequently joined with a gas diffusion layer through hot-pressing at a temperature around the melting point of tin. This procedure was optimised, depositing 30 μm of Sn onto the stainless steel bipolar plate before hot-pressing at 230 °C and 0.5 bar for 20 min. A contact resistance of 5.45 mΩ cm2 at 140 N cm?2 was obtained, with low values maintained after exposure to both in-situ and ex-situ conditions. The in-situ testing in a fuel cell produced excellent results, with minor increases in contact resistance from 8.8 to 9.2 mΩ cm2 and decreases in cell voltage from 0.714 to 0.667 V after 200 h of operation. These values are comparable to gold plated stainless steel, showing that combining a gas diffusion layer with electrodeposited Sn through hot-pressing is a promising low-cost coating for bipolar plates in PEM fuel cells.  相似文献
