A thorough and quantitative understanding of the fate of excitons in covalent–organic frameworks (COFs) after photoexcitation is essential for their augmented optoelectronic and photocatalytic applications via precise structure tuning. The synthesis of a library of COFs having identical chemical backbone with impeded conjugation, but varied morphology and surface topography to study the effect of these physical properties on the photophysics of the materials is herein reported. The variation of crystallite size and surface topography substantified different aggregation pattern in the COFs, which leads to disparities in their photoexcitation and relaxation properties. Depending on aggregation, an inverse correlation between bulk luminescence decay time and exciton binding energy of the materials is perceived. Further transient absorption spectroscopic analysis confirms the presence of highly localized, immobile, Frenkel excitons (of diameter 0.3–0.5 nm) via an absence of annihilation at high density, most likely induced by structural torsion of the COF skeletons, which in turn preferentially relaxes via long-lived (nanosecond to microsecond) excimer formation (in femtosecond scale) over direct emission. These insights underpin the importance of structural and topological design of COFs for their targeted use in photocatalysis.  相似文献

The depletion of natural resources, the increasing use of valuable land surface for human activities, and the generation of waste are detrimental to the planet. Sustainable alternatives to guarantee a sufficient supply of food, feed, and biomaterials are needed. Insects may hold an interesting position in a circular economy to tackle contemporary societal challenges. Using insects for food, feed, biomaterial production, and to valorize side-streams, have gained increased interest. Mealworms are amenable to large-scale farming. Herein, the potential of mealworm oil for implementation in a cosmetic hand cream is evaluated. It is shown that mealworms are rich in oil (≈30% of the dry weight), and the oil can be extracted using hexane or ethyl acetate as a solvent. The euthanization step of mealworms has profound effect on the free fatty acid content. The fatty acid profile indicates a large proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, which is promising for use in cosmetic applications. In a proof of concept, the mealworm oil is implemented in a hand cream and compared to hand cream containing macadamia nut oil. No differences in odor and aspect/stability are observed, but mealworm creams are slightly less white color. Mealworm oil is suitable for cosmetics applications. Practical applications: Several insect species can be sustainably reared on low-value organic side-streams, requiring only small amounts of land-surface, less water, and producing less greenhouse gases. In addition, they have short life cycles and can be reared continuously and locally. This implies that insects are an interesting source of biological materials including proteins and oils. Insect oils, including oil of mealworms, have interesting fatty acid profiles that make them amenable to replace oils of vegetable origin for applications within cosmetics. The results indicate that mealworm oil can be a novel, sustainable ingredient for use in the cosmetics industry.  相似文献

The identification of pseudo- and N1-methylpseudo-uridine (Ψ and mΨ, respectively) as immunosilent uridine analogues has propelled the development of mRNA-based vaccines and therapeutics. Here, we have characterised another uridine analogue, 5-ethynyluridine (EU), which has an ethynyl moiety. We show that this uridine analogue does not cause immune activation in human macrophages, as it does not induce interleukin-6 secretion or expression of the inflammatory and antiviral genes MX1, PKR, and TAP2. Moreover, EU allows for prolonged expression, as shown with mRNA coding for yellow fluorescent protein (YFP). Side-by-side comparisons of EU with unmodified, Ψ, and mΨ revealed that EU-modified mRNA is expressed at lower levels, but confers similar stability and low immunogenicity to the other uridine analogues. Furthermore, structure analysis of modified mRNAs suggests that the observed phenotype is largely independent of RNA folding. Thus, EU is a potential candidate for RNA-based vaccines and therapeutics.  相似文献

An ideal nanomedicine system improves the therapeutic efficacy of drugs. However, most nanomedicines enter cells via endosomal/lysosomal pathways and only a small fraction of the cargo enters the cytosol inducing therapeutic effects. To circumvent this inefficiency, alternative approaches are desired. Inspired by fusion machinery found in nature, synthetic lipidated peptide pair E4/K4 is used to induce membrane fusion previously. Peptide K4 interacts specifically with E4, and it has a lipid membrane affinity and resulting in membrane remodeling. To design efficient fusogens with multiple interactions, dimeric K4 variants are synthesized to improve fusion with E4-modified liposomes and cells. The secondary structure and self-assembly of dimers are studied; the parallel PK4 dimer forms temperature-dependent higher-order assemblies, while linear K4 dimers form tetramer-like homodimers. The structures and membrane interactions of PK4 are supported by molecular dynamics simulations. Upon addition of E4, PK4 induced the strongest coiled-coil interaction resulting in a higher liposomal delivery compared to linear dimers and monomer. Using a wide spectrum of endocytosis inhibitors, membrane fusion is found to be the main cellular uptake pathway. Doxorubicin delivery results in efficient cellular uptake and concomitant antitumor efficacy. These findings aid the development of efficient delivery systems of drugs into cells using liposome-cell fusion strategies.  相似文献

The strength and deformation of full-scale adhesively bonded multi-material joints is studied in this paper. Four joints with a thick layer of methyl methacrylate adhesive (MMA) have been manufactured in shipyard conditions. In two specimens, cracks have been introduced at steel–adhesive and composite–adhesive interfaces. One cracked and one un-cracked specimen were subjected to quasi-static tensile testing; the two remaining specimens were stepwise loaded/unloaded with increasing load until failure. The strain in the adhesive layers was measured with digital image correlation (DIC). This showed a predominant shear deformation and dissimilar shear strain patterns for different bond lines. Fibre Bragg (FBG) sensors were used to monitor strains at steel and composite constituents and to detect the onset and evolution of damage in the un-cracked specimen. Strains measured by FBG sensors correspond well with DIC results at nearby regions. All specimens failed by delamination of the composite panel near the composite–adhesive interface.  相似文献

Fires are rare events, but in the case of their occurrence, they can have a significant effect on the structure. Concrete is a durable noncombustible material but can be damaged by fire. This damage does not often lead to structural collapse, but can significantly hinder the structure's future performance. A thorough post-fire assessment of concrete structures is essential to determine the condition of the structure and select the best course of action to take. This paper reviews the current state of knowledge on the post-fire assessment of concrete structures. The techniques that are commonly used are presented and discussed, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, based on the literature case studies, an overview of different approaches and techniques is presented. Finally, the framework and goals of the post-fire assessment are investigated. The paper concludes with a summary of the current state of knowledge and a list of key research needs.  相似文献

In an automated tunnel maze rats were allowed to explore either a 6-arm radial configuration ("experienced") or an alley maze configuration ("nonexperienced"). The activity of control rats was restricted to the center of the maze. After 8 daily sessions and a 5-day break, catheters were implanted into the jugular vein. Two days later, 2-deoxyglucose was administered before both experimental groups were exposed to the 6-arm radial configuration. Nonexperienced rats differed from experienced rats in terms of efficiency of exploration, but not in locomotor activity. Compared with experienced animals, nonexperienced rats showed an increase in 2-deoxyglucose uptake in prefrontal and cingulate cortices and in mediodorsal and laterodorsal thalamic nuclei. A new approach to the notion of a probability space is proposed. A stochastically measurable space is equipped with a geometric structure by introducing distances between elementary events. The probabilistic proximity space (in the discrete case) is used to generalize the notion of entropy. Entropy thus geometrized is shown to preserve all the former properties and also to acquire a previously unknown useful quality. Growing emphasis is currently given in decision modeling on process data to capture behavioral mechanisms that ground decision-making processes. Nevertheless, advanced applications to elicit such data are still lacking. The Causal Network Elicitation Technique interview and card-game, both face-to-face interviews, are examples of a behavioral process method to obtain individuals’ decision-making by eliciting temporary mental representations of particular problems. However, to portray and model these representations into formal modeling approaches, such as Bayesian decision networks, an extensive set of parameters has to be gathered for each individual. Thus, data collection procedures for large sample groups can be costly and time consuming. This paper reports on the methodological conversion and enhancement of the existing elicitation methods into a computer-based interface that allows to not only uncover individuals’ mental representations but also to automate the generation of preference parameter elicitation questions. Results of such studies can be used to understand individuals’ constructs and beliefs with respect to decision alternatives, predict individuals’ decision behavior at a disaggregate level, and to assess behavioral changes due to differences in contexts and constraints.  相似文献

Degenerative mechanisms involved in the aging process of the brain are to a certain extent counteracted by repair mechanisms. In both degenerative and recovery processes, trace elements are involved. The present study focused on the role of two minor (i.e., K and Ca) and six trace elements (i.e., Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Se and Rb) in the aging process. The elements were determined by PIXE in cerebral cortex and white matter, basal ganglia, brainstem and cerebellar cortex of 18 postmortem human brains, from persons without a history of neurologic or psychiatric disease who deceased between the age of 7 and 79. This age range allowed us to study the relationship between elemental concentrations and age. The most prominent findings were a concentration decrease for K and Rb and a concentration increase for the elements Ca, Fe, Zn and Se. The study supports recent findings that Ca and Fe are involved in brain degenerative processes initiated by oxygen free radicals, whereas Zn and Se are involved in immunological reactions counteracting the aging process.  相似文献
