The aim of this work was to study the influence of a diet with probiotic bacteria on the lipid composition of different tissues from Iberian pigs. Cholesterol and fatty acid profiles were measured in liver, subcutaneous fat, and Serratus ventralis muscle samples. Feeding Iberian pigs a mixture of probiotic microorganisms for 45 days prior to slaughter affected the tissue composition. The feeds of the control and probiotic groups were identical except for the added Bacillus licheniformis and Bacillus subtilis (1.28 × 109 cfu/kg feed) in the feed of the probiotic group. The diet with probiotics significantly affected the fatty acid profile of liver, subcutaneous fat and Serratus ventralis muscle samples, but no significant differences were found for the cholesterol content. The livers of the probiotic group contained lower levels of n‐6 fatty acids and higher levels of n‐3 fatty acids. The subcutaneous fat contained lower levels of n‐6 fatty acids. Serratus ventralis muscles from the probiotic group contained a significantly higher percentage of oleic acid than those of the control group. Practical applications: This study deals with the effect of the addition of probiotic bacteria to the diet of pigs on both the cholesterol and fatty acid content. B. subtilis and B. licheniformis can be used in pig feed (Regulation EC no. 2148/2004), but there are no studies about their effects on fresh meat or other tissues, particularly regarding the fat composition. Thus, it is interesting to study how feeding these microorganisms affects the different tissues. Including these microorganisms in the basic diet could serve as a strategy to modify the fat composition and to obtain healthier products from pigs. 相似文献

An anionic surface‐active agent derived from wool proteins was developed as an alternative to the anionic surfactants extensively used in shampoo formulations. The physicochemical properties of this new surface‐active agent prepared form wool proteins and its application for human hair treatments were studied. This new product could be considered a new mild anionic surface‐active agent, as evidenced by the results found by the evaluation of its physicochemical properties. The new wool anionic surface‐active agent was shown to be very substantive to hair, coating the fiber surface, giving rise to a significant improvement in the mechanical properties of the hair fibers, and providing a certain damage‐prevention effect on the hair. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The mechanisms governing the solubilizing interactions between zwitterionic/anionic mixed surfactant systems at different
molar fractions of the zwitterionic surfactant (Xzwitter) and neutral or electrically charged unilamellar liposomes were investigated. The mixed systems were formed by N-dodecyl-N,N-dimethylbetaine
and sodium dodecyl sulfate in the presence of piperazine-1,4-bis-(2-ethanesulfonic acid) buffer at pH 7.20. Unilamellar liposomes formed by egg phosphatidylcholine, in some cases together
with stearylamine or phosphatidic acid, were used. Solubilization was detected as a decrease in static light-scattering of
liposomes. Two parameters were regarded as corresponding to the effective surfactant/lipid molar ratios (Re) at which the
surfactant system (i) saturated the liposomes, Resat, and (ii) led to a total solubilization of liposomes, Resol. From these parameters the bilayer/aqueous medium surfactant partition coefficients for the saturation (Ksat) and complete bilayer solubilization (Ksol) were determined. When Xzwitter was 0.40, The Re and K parameters showed a maximum, whereas the critical micellar concentration (CMC) of these systems exhibited
a minimum, regardless of the electrical charge of bilayers. Given that the ability of the surfactant systems to saturate or
solubilize liposomes is inversely related to the Resat and Resol parameters, these capacities appear to be directly correlated with the CMC of the mixed systems. The similarity of both Ksat and Ksol (particularly for Xzwitter=0.2–0.8) suggests that a similar partition equilibrium governs both the saturation and the complete solubilization of bilayers,

OBJECTIVES: An evolving technology for the treatment of bladder outlet obstruction due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is the use of the side-firing neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser to achieve prostatic tissue ablation. The purpose of this study was to determine the short-term efficacy of this procedure in both an objective and subjective manner. METHODS: We examined this technique by carefully evaluating our first 25 men undergoing the procedure. Each patient was subjected to careful symptom score analysis using the American Urological Association symptom index and multichannel urodynamics, including pressure-flow studies both preoperatively and at 3 months postoperatively. RESULTS: At the 3-month follow-up, symptom scores improved from a preoperative mean of 11.4 to 7.2 and the mean maximum flow rate improved from 6.1 to 14.5 cc/s. These are both significant at P < 0.001. Statistically similar improvement was seen in detrusor pressure at opening and at maximum flow. Eighty percent of the men studied had at least a 50% reduction in symptom score and a 50% improvement in flow rate. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that laser prostatectomy is a promising minimally invasive treatment for bladder outlet obstruction secondary to BPH and deserves further evaluation at longer terms of follow-up. 相似文献

A diverse family of protein 4.1R isoforms is encoded by a complex gene on human chromosome 1. Although the prototypical 80-kDa 4.1R in mature erythrocytes is a key component of the erythroid membrane skeleton that regulates erythrocyte morphology and mechanical stability, little is known about 4.1R function in nucleated cells. Using gene knockout technology, we have generated mice with complete deficiency of all 4.1R protein isoforms. These 4.1R-null mice were viable, with moderate hemolytic anemia but no gross abnormalities. Erythrocytes from these mice exhibited abnormal morphology, lowered membrane stability, and reduced expression of other skeletal proteins including spectrin and ankyrin, suggesting that loss of 4. 1R compromises membrane skeleton assembly in erythroid progenitors. Platelet morphology and function were essentially normal, indicating that 4.1R deficiency may have less impact on other hematopoietic lineages. Nonerythroid 4.1R expression patterns, viewed using histochemical staining for lacZ reporter activity incorporated into the targeted gene, revealed focal expression in specific neurons in the brain and in select cells of other major organs, challenging the view that 4.1R expression is widespread among nonerythroid cells. The 4.1R knockout mice represent a valuable animal model for exploring 4.1R function in nonerythroid cells and for determining pathophysiological sequelae to 4.1R deficiency. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Proteolysis was studied in low-fat caprine curd slurries pre-incubated (24 h at 30 °C) with an extra dose of rennet, 10.0 or 22.0 μg g-1 (LR and HR slurries, respectively), and treated at 70 °C for 15 min prior to incubation with sonicated cells of Lactococcus lactis subsp lactis IFPL 359 alone or combined with Lactobacillus casei subsp casei IFPL 731. The addition of lactobacilli to slurries containing lactococci increased the conversion of water-soluble nitrogen to nonprotein nitrogen and amine nitrogen. Major differences were found for some free amino acids, such as glutamic acid and proline, and hydrolysis of most hydrophobic peptides produced by lactococci, which are associated with bitterness in cheese. 相似文献

The mechanisms that couple cell cycle progression with the organization of the peripheral cytoskeleton are poorly understood. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the Swe1 protein has been shown previously to phosphorylate and inactivate the cyclin-dependent kinase, Cdc28, thereby delaying the onset of mitosis. The nim1-related protein kinase, Hsl1, induces entry into mitosis by negatively regulating Swe1. We have found that Hsl1 physically associates with the septin cytoskeleton in vivo and that Hsl1 kinase activity depends on proper septin function. Genetic analysis indicates that two additional Hsl1-related kinases, Kcc4 and Gin4, act redundantly with Hsl1 to regulate Swe1. Kcc4, like Hsl1 and Gin4, was found to localize to the bud neck in a septin-dependent fashion. Interestingly, hsl1 kcc4 gin4 triple mutants develop a cellular morphology extremely similar to that of septin mutants. Consistent with the idea that Hsl1, Kcc4, and Gin4 link entry into mitosis to proper septin organization, we find that septin mutants incubated at the restrictive temperature trigger a Swe1-dependent mitotic delay that is necessary to maintain cell viability. These results reveal for the first time how cells monitor the organization of their cytoskeleton and demonstrate the existence of a cell cycle checkpoint that responds to defects in the peripheral cytoskeleton. Moreover, Hsl1, Kcc4, and Gin4 have homologs in higher eukaryotes, suggesting that the regulation of Swe1/Wee1 by this class of kinases is highly conserved. 相似文献

An experimental setup, based on current/voltage conversion through transimpedance amplifiers (TAs), has been implemented for the direct full low-frequency noise (LFN) characterization of Si/SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs) in terms of base and collector short-circuit current noise sources. This setup performs a full characterization, as it measures simultaneously the two noise current sources and their correlation, thanks to an original technique based on the specific properties of a specially designed buffer amplifier using a low-noise common-base bipolar transistor (CB BJT). By means of translation formulae, the obtained measurements are compared with those carried out with a multi-impedance technique. They show a good agreement both for the noise sources spectral densities and for their correlation. A study is reported in which wool fibres were pre-treated with ionic surfactants and subsequently subjected to sulphitolysis at different pH values in order to follow the chemical behaviour of cystine disulphide bonds in relation to that of bisulphite ions when surfactant molecules had previously been fixed on the protein. The influence of several parameters, such as the pH, concentration, temperature, and time of treatment of wool fibres with ionic surfactants, on the cystine reactivity was studied. Investigations of how treatment with alkylsulphates in the chain-length range C6–C16 modifies the reactivity of the native protein to sodium bisulphite are also reported. 相似文献
