This paper addresses the question of theoretical versus practical performance of algorithms and data structures. It describes an experiment the first author has been using in his data structures course to achieve the primary objective of comparing theoretical behavior of algorithms with their actual performance. It also presents enhancements in performance evaluation experiments and a general methodology that can be used to develop experiments in senior or first-year graduate courses in data structures, algorithm analysis, software engineering, and operating systems  相似文献

Gasoline is a mixture of about 100 hydrocarbon compounds. Molecular carbon numbers range from C6-C12 and evaporating between ambient temperatures to about 220°C. Gasoline is used in spark ignition engines (cars and motorcycles). The grades and types of gasoline are usually defined in terms of octane numbers. The specifications of gasoline is based mainly on physical properties, which can be related to performance such as volatility and octane number. Chemical components such as oxygen, sulfur, lead, and benzene are also significant. The present trend is to incorporate generic fractions such as aromatics and olefinics in the specifications. How these parameters (specifications) relate to the various fuel requirements and subsequently affect the environment is described in this article.  相似文献

Approaches generally used in defining constitutive relations for concrete are reviewed. A computer program developed for the three-dimensional finite element analysis of complex reinforced, prestressed, and refractory concrete systems is described. The constitutive models based on isotropic elastic, orthotropic elastic, and plasticity formulations, which are implemented in that program, are discussed in detail. The program incorporates nonlinear material properties, cracking in concrete, shear transfer in cracked reinforced concrete sections, and time dependent effects such as creep, shrinkage, and transient temperature distributions. A wide range of structural problems are analyzed to demonstrate the applicability of the computer program. Comparisons between predictions with different constitutive models, and between predictions and test results are made.  相似文献

The oxidative stability and compositional characteristics of the pumpkin seed oil (PSO) exposed to microwaves were studied during heating at 170°C. The oxidative indices such as free fatty acid (FFA), peroxide value (PV), p-anisidine value (p-AV), TOTOX, specific extinctions and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value of oils were significantly increased, and the increments were found to be significantly higher (P < 0.05) in unroasted seed oil as compared to roasted seed oil. The relative contents of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were decreased to 84.7%, and saturated fatty acids (SFAs) were increased to 119.5% in unroasted sample, after 9 h of heating. On the other hand, in 12 min roasted samples, the relative contents of PUFAs were decreased to 97.0%, and SFAs were increased to 102.6% after 9 h of heating. The triacylglycerol species LLL and OLL levels were decreased as a consequence of increased heating time, and the reduction tended to be significantly higher in unroasted samples as compared to roasted ones. The oxidation products formed were also investigated by FTIR. The present results indicated that microwave roasting of pumpkin seeds markedly enhanced the oxidative stability of the oils during heating.  相似文献

Congestion of transmission line is a vital issue and its management pose a technical challenge in power system deregulation. Congestion occurs in deregulated electricity market when transmission capacity is not sufficient to simultaneously accommodate all constraints of power transmission through a line. Therefore, to manage congestion, a locational marginal price (LMP) based zonal congestion management approach in a deregulated electricity market has been proposed in this paper. As LMP is an economic indicator and its difference between two buses across a transmission line provides the measure of the degree of congestion, therefore, it is efficiently and reliably used in deregulated electricity market for congestion management. This paper utilizes the difference of LMP across a transmission line to categorize various congestion zones in the system. After the identification of congestion zones, distributed generation is optimally placed in most congestion sensitive zones using LMP difference in order to manage congestion. The performance of the proposed methodology has been tested on the IEEE 14-bus system and IEEE 57-bus system.  相似文献

This paper reports on the reinforcing effects of different types of fillers, namely, nanoclay (NC), micron size calcium carbonate (MCC), and micron size recycled powder coating waste (MPCW), on the ultimate properties of acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) compounds. The microcomposites and nanocomposites were characterized by X‐ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, implying enlargement of d‐spacing of NC or intercalation of NBR chains and formation of exfoliated structure, while some agglomerates of MCC were detected. Curing characteristics of the studied composites showed that incorporation of the fillers into the NBR, in particular the NC, causes an increase in the torque, indicating a higher degree of crosslinking. Furthermore, different from micron size MPCW and MCC, the NC accelerated the vulcanization reaction. It was also found that the use of NC and MPCW results in a remarkable increase in the mechanical and rheological properties compared with pure NBR. All in all, variations in the aforementioned criteria were attributable to the extent of matrix/filler interaction reflected by scanning electron micrographs. The correlation established between the microstructure and characteristics of the prepared NBR composites can shed some light on how to develop composites with enhanced properties by incorporating waste materials into the polymers. Significant progress has been made in the past decade in plasma nitriding with a majority of the research work focusing on improving hardness and wear resistance of the nitrided surface through the reduction of nitriding temperature, pressure or time. Hard-solid lubricating coatings have also been extensively studied for lowering the wear rate and coefficient of friction of traditional hard coatings such as TiN by the combined effect of hardness and solid lubrication. In this study, the wear characteristics of low-temperature plasma-nitrided steel substrate performed using a Saddle-field fast atom beam source and TiN + MoS x hard-solid lubricant coating deposited by a closed-field magnetron-sputtering technique have been investigated. The thin hard layer in plasma-nitrided substrates exhibited much higher hardness and lower wear compared to the untreated substrate in pin-on-disc wear testing. In addition, the study of the wear track morphology of the nitrided samples evidenced significant reduction of deeper ploughing and plastic deformation due to higher hardness and load supporting of the nitrided layer. On the other hand, due to the incorporation of MoS2 in TiN coating, the wear resistance and coefficient of friction were greatly improved in TiN + MoS x coating compared to pure TiN coating. In contrast to TiN coating, a relatively smoother wear track with less abrasive wear also supported the beneficial effects of adding MoS2 in TiN coating.  相似文献

We present experimental results for the performance of selected voice codecs using Datagram Congestion Control Protocol (DCCP) with CCID4 congestion control over a satellite link. We evaluate the performance of both constant and variable data rate speech codecs for a number of simultaneous calls using the ITU E‐model. We analyse the sources of packet losses and additionally analyse the effect of jitter, which is one of the crucial parameters contributing to Voice over IP (VoIP) quality and has, to the best of our knowledge, not been considered previously in the published DCCP performance results. We propose modifications to the CCID4 algorithm and demonstrate how these improve the VoIP performance, without the need for additional link information other than what is already monitored by CCID4. We also demonstrate the fairness of the proposed modifications to other flows. Although the recently adopted changes to TCP‐Friendly Rate Control specification alleviate some of the performance issues for VoIP on satellite links, we argue that the characteristics of commercial satellite links necessitate consideration of further improvements. We identify the additional benefit of DCCP when used in VoIP admission control mechanisms and draw conclusions about the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed DCCP/CCID4 congestion control mechanism for use with VoIP applications. We report the growth of graded InGaN nanowires by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Wire composition is linearly graded from InN to GaN along the length of each wire. The large lattice mismatch between GaN and InN (11%) introduces tensile strain in the graded region, which results in cracking of the wires. Growing with reverse grading (i.e., GaN to InN) results in crack-free nanowires. The composition is measured by energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy of individual nanowires performed in a scanning transmission electron microscope, and strain is measured by high-resolution x-ray diffraction.  相似文献

A one-dimensional discrete-sectional model has been developed to simulate particle growth in aerosol reactors. Two sets of differential equations for volume and surface area, respectively, were solved simultaneously to determine the size distributions of agglomerates and primary particles. The surface area equations were derived in such a way that the coagulation integrals calculated for the volume equations could be used for the surface area equations as well, which is new in this model. The model was applied to a production of TiO2 particles by oxidation of titanium tetrachloride. Model predictions were compared with experimental data and those of a two-dimensional sectional model. Good agreement was shown in calculated particle size distributions between the present model and the two-dimensional model, which is more rigorous but demands a large amount of computer time and memory. Compared to experimental data, the primary particle size calculated by the model was more sensitive to the variation of reactor temperature.  相似文献
